Sustainability Partnerships And Viticulture Management In California, Vicken Hillis, Mark Lubell, Matthew Hoffman

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

Agricultural regions in the United States are experimenting with sustainability partnerships that, among other goals, seek to improve growers' ability to manage their vineyards sustainably. In this paper, we analyze the association between winegrape grower participation in sustainability partnership activities and practice adoption in three winegrowing regions of California. Using data gathered from a survey of 822 winegrape growers, we find a positive association between participation and adoption of sustainable practices, which holds most strongly for practices in which the perceived private benefits outweigh the costs, and for growers with relatively dense social networks. We highlight the mechanisms by which …

Collecting Carbon: An Analysis Of Soil Carbon In Conservation Reserve Program Fields And Agricultural Fields, Cody Welcher, Destiny Magee, Kenneth Elgersma

Undergraduate Student Work

Intensive agricultural practices are associated with detrimental effects to the environment including, but not limited to, increasing the rate of soil erosion, introducing pollutants to water supply, reduced habitat for various species, and reduced atmospheric carbon sequestration in soils.

The Conservation Reserve Program allows farmers to enroll sensitive lands into the program and out of circulation for agricultural purposes. It has been shown to increase soil carbon sequestration, reduce erosion, increase water and air quality, and provide habitat restoration for displaced species, along with other benefits.

Comparison Of Traditional And Alternative Ingredients On Meat Curing Reactions Using A Model System, Faith Rasmussen 2018 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Comparison Of Traditional And Alternative Ingredients On Meat Curing Reactions Using A Model System, Faith Rasmussen

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Consumer’s negative perception of “chemical-sounding” ingredients has increased the use of alternative ingredients. The objective of this study was to determine the effect traditional (sodium nitrite with or without sodium erythorbate) or alternative (celery juice powder with or without acerola cherry powder) curing systems with different ingoing concentrations of sodium nitrite using model meat solutions. Curing systems with reducing agents developed the most cured meat pigment (p < 0.001). Using more than 50 ppm of nitrite did not further increase cured meat pigment (p < 0.001). Curing systems with reducing agents and 50 ppm or greater nitrite had the least residual nitrite (p < 0.001). Alternative curing systems had the most residual sulfhydryl groups when formulated with 100 ppm or more nitrite (p < 0.001). Treatments with reducing agents had greater residual reducing capacity than treatments without reducing agents (p < 0.001). Both alternative and traditional curing systems develop similar cured meat pigment but differences in the nitrosation of cysteine exist.

Equine West Nile Encephalitis, Karl Hoopes, Karah Nay

All Current Publications

West Nile Virus (WNV) was first introduced to the United States in 1999. Since then, the disease has spread to all of our equine populations. Spread by mosquitos from infected birds to horses, WNV can cross the blood-brain barrier to cause an encephalomyelitis. Clinical signs can include weakness, ataxia, muscle twitching, coma, and even death. Prevention, by vaccination and reducing mosquito numbers, is much more effective than treating the disease.
