Determinants Of Weanling Thoroughbred Auction Prices, Charlotte R. Hansen, C. Jill Stowe

Determinants of prices of 1,302 weanling Thoroughbreds sold at the 2010 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale are investigated. A hedonic pricing model is adopted to identify price determinants, and the corresponding marginal values of those determinants are estimated. Prices were responsive to pedigree quality variables, including the sire's stud fee, the stage of the sire's breeding career, and whether the dam or the dam's progeny had earned “black type.” In addition, individual weanling characteristics such as gender, age, state of birth, and sale placement influenced price. Results can be used as a decision tool by both buyers and sellers.

The design of the income tax code reflects the special role of patronage equity in cooperative finance. Federal tax laws and policies allow agricultural cooperatives to retain net income as a source of equity capital by giving special tax deductions when income is allocated to patrons in proportion to their business with the cooperative. Income distribution choices by cooperatives have tax consequences.

The empirical relationship among corn prices, ethanol production, and government subsidies is investigated. An econometric model of the demand for corn is proposed and then estimated with two stage least squares. The estimated demand function is used to evaluate the effects of changes in ethanol markets on domestic corn markets. The results show that an increase in the price of ethanol increases both the equilibrium quantity demanded and price of corn. Agricultural subsidies are then brought under question in light of econometric evidence and coupled with current trends in the ethanol and corn industries.

Significant financial changes have been underway in the U.S. agricultural system. After a decade of increases in crop and livestock prices mirrored by corresponding increases in expenses, prices began declining dramatically in 2014 (USDA-NASS, 2017). Figure 1 shows yearly net farm income for Nebraska crop and livestock producers from 2000 to 2015 (USDA, ERS). A survey in July 2016 indicated that 52 percent of Nebraska farmers and ranchers were financially stressed.

It has been proposed that non-irrigated sweet sorghum might be grown in western Nebraska as a seasonal substitute for corn grain in corn ethanol plants. In the research summarized here, we examine the economic feasibility of this possibility, based on the technical data that are currently available about sweet sorghum production.

Community attachment or connection to a community has been shown to be related to numerous items. The Knight Foundation’s Soul of the Community project found positive correlations between community attachment and local GDP growth. They also found higher levels of community attachment were related to community social offerings, openness of the community to different types of people and aesthetics of the community. Conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs to increase primary-school enrollment and attendance among low-income households have been shown to benefit children and households, but to date little is known about who joins such programs. We test three hypotheses about predictors of CCT program participation in indigenous societies in Bolivia, focusing on attributes of the household (ethnicity), parents (modern human capital), and children (age, sex). We model whether children receive a transfer from Bolivia’s CCT program (Bono Juancito Pinto), using data from 811 school-age children and nine ethnic groups. Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

The objectives of the study are two-fold. The first is to find out the relationship between the personal entrepreneurial competencies (PEC), as identified by Management Systems International, and the entrepreneurial intention of non-business students who are taking up an introductory entrepreneurship course. The second is to determine whether the entrepreneurial competencies of the students improved after taking the course. Using Spearman rank-order correlation, the study reveals that eight of the ten entrepreneurial competencies have a significant correlation with entrepreneurial intention although the relationship ranges only from moderate to weak. This article presents a pedagogical approach to teaching technical and professional writing with an eye toward cultivating awareness and generating informed research among undergraduate students about food production and its various, intricate networks between Big Ag and campus cafeterias. Our pedagogy, influenced by interdisciplinary content, is designed to teach students to differentiate between food processes—such as production versus distribution and consumption—by viewing these networks as communicative practices rather than as inevitable chains or simple functions of one another. Our approach encourages students to locate and analyze differences between interdependent, but seemingly disparate pathways and to make visible communicative intersections that …

Linkages between agricultural commodity and energy prices have become more complex with increased ethanol production. The concern is whether the new corn–ethanol links lead to volatility-spillover transmission between food and energy prices. We investigate asymmetric volatility spillovers between oil, corn, and ethanol prices using a BEKK-multivariate-GARCH approach. Additionally, we use daily, weekly, and monthly futures prices to examine whether the use of different-frequency data leads to inconsistent results. The results support the existence of asymmetric volatility transmission between corn and ethanol prices. Furthermore, the volatility-spillover effects are different for the different-frequency prices, and positive and negative price changes generate inconsistent …

Although China is generally known as a tea-consuming country, both the production and consumption of coffee in China has seen double-digit growth in the last decade. This upward trend is projected to continue as long as investment is sustained and levels of disposable income continue to increase. In this rapidly expanding market, it is important for coffee producers and retailers in China to understand the preferences of emerging Chinese coffee consumers.
