There is an increasing array of land-grant, nonprofit, and other academic programs intended to support the development of food system enterprises and programs. However, research to track consumers' evolving preferences and behaviors within these systems and to measure the intended policy outcomes of any public investments in these systems is lagging. This research commentary represents a compilation of opinions and insights from those who are interested in exploring research priorities for economic, marketing, and supply-chain aspects of local food systems. Sustainable farms are critical to United States’ food independence and they positively contribute to the global economy. Farms in the United States are not sustainable without profitable supplemental income. The purpose of this case study was to explore the historic profitability of farm income supplementation methods. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory served as the conceptual framework. A purposive sample of 25 farmers from 5 regions of the continental United States completed semistructured interviews and described their personal experiences. Its programs have been widely observed, scrutinized, and emulated. This policy brief examines Malawi’s Farm Input Subsidy Program (FISP) and distills a set of key research findings drawn from research conducted recently at Purdue University.

metabolites in soil and sediment samples from Kilombero sugarcane plantations and environs, Morogoro Region, Tanzania. The samples were screened for 56 different pesticide residues and their metabolites using GC-ECD and GC-NPD and the results were confirmed by GC-MS. A total of 31 soil samples and 19 sediment samples were analysed in this study and a total of 16 different pesticides/metabolites were detected in soil samples; and 12 different pesticides/metabolites were detected in sediment samples. o,p’-DDT was shown to have the highest concentration of all the detected pesticides/metabolites in soil samples with a mean concentration of 21.04µg/kg d.w whereas the highest …

The current economic and marketing reforms in Tanzania have not led to expected improvement in the productivity, incomes and overall livelihoods of coffee growers. Consequently, farmer’s cooperatives have been unable to satisfactorily provide the essential services to their members. This paper analyses the impact of market liberalisation to members of cooperatives. Data was collected by household surveys, FGD and interviews, whereby structured questionnaires and checklists were employed. The study found out that following market liberalisation, Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) are disorganised and lack strong management. Economic and Financial Review

Several studies have found a positive correlation between agricultural financing and the performance of the agricultural sector. But fewer efforts have been directed at sieving out the agricultural output that is exclusively associated with the extent of funding. This study aimed to ascertain the actual portion of total agricultural output that could be attributed to agricultural financing in Nigeria. The vector error correction methodology was applied following the nature of data properties. The results showed a positive effect of finance on agricultural output. This dissertation studies three main issues related to renewable energy in the United States and in Sub Sahara Africa.

The first chapter seeks to provide answers to a very fundamental question for second generation biofuels: “How much crop residue can farmers harvest from their fields for sale to cellulosic ethanol companies without affecting current levels of production?” The model developed is applied to 101 counties from four Midwestern states in the United States (Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming). Results show that soil organic matter significantly contributes to explaining changes in technical efficiency and total factor productivity. Furthermore, average crop …
