Nonmetropolitan residents, those living outside central urbanized areas greater than 50,000 in population, are one of the largest medically underserved populations in the United States. Twenty percent of the U.S. population lives in nonmetropolitan areas, yet only nine percent of primary care providers are practicing in such areas (Rosenblatt and Hart 2000, 348). In addition to a geographic imbalance of healthcare practitioners, nonmetropolitan residents suffer from higher rates of chronic diseases and disability, report higher levels of obesity, are older on average, and are more likely to report being in fair or poor health than their metropolitan counterparts (Ricketts 2000, …

International trade is important for Nebraska and U.S. agriculture. Export sales account for about 27% of gross farm receipts in Nebraska, 32% for the United States as a whole. Consumers also benefit from agricultural trade which assures a steady supply of consumer goods ranging from tropical fruits to chocolate, coffee, and other goods that have become essential elements in consumer food baskets. Agricultural commodity markets continued their decline in 2015 and 2016 as producers across Nebraska faced lower prices for crops and livestock. Lower values have resulted in tighter margins for servicing rent or debt payments. Preliminary findings from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey 2016 indicate that as of February 1, 2016 the weighted average farmland value declined by about 4 percent over the prior 12-month period to $3,135 per acre (Figure 1 and Table 1). This decline marks the second consecutive year of lower weighted average farmland values in Nebraska.

Infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) has been associated with reductions in milk production in dairy cows and sub optimal fertility. The aim of this study was to highlight the production losses associated with testing MAP ELISA positive in Irish dairy cows. Secondary objectives included investigation of risk factors associated with testing MAP ELISA positive. A survey of management practices on study farms was also conducted, with examination of associations between management practices and herd MAP status.

Development of glyphosate resistant transgenes started in the early 1980s and was commercially introduced in soybean varieties in 1996 as Roundup Ready?(hereafter referred to as RR1) (SourceWatch, 2012). Producers perceived that the more effective, easier, and less expensive weed control associated with these varieties outweighed the economic loss from lower yields (Gurian-Sherman, 2009). In 2008, the Roundup Ready 2 Yield varieties were commercialized as Genuity?Roundup Ready 2 Yield?(hereafter referred to as RR2Y) in 2010 (SourceWatch, 2012). RR2Y soybean varieties have been rapidly replacing the RR1 varieties in the marketplace.

2016 Cow-Calf Production Shows Less Profitability, Roger K. Wilson

Economics Department formulated four cowcalf budgets. The Sandhills Cow/Calf Producer Budget is for a herd of 500 cows and the data is from a panel of producers in Cherry County. The remaining three budgets are the 50-cow herd located in the panhandle of the state, and the 300- and 750-head Cow Herd System generally located in and around Custer County. These last three budgets were compiled from producer survey data collected for this purpose. Budgets are available online at http:// farm.unl.edu/beef#budgets.
