Service-Learning plays a significant role in liberal arts education which is the preferred form of undergraduate education for meeting the challenges of the New /Creative Economy of today. The modern world has brought about issues such as dealing with uncertainty and change, diversity, and inequality resulting from digital divide. Liberal arts education emphasizes the importance of teaching and learning processes such as interactive relationships, community services, transdisciplinarity, and international exposure. Service-Learning is a useful medium through which the liberal arts teaching and learning processes can be practiced and the issues of the modern economy can be studies or even resolved.

Owing to a long-term decline in fertility and improvement in longevity, the rapid process of population ageing has become an emerging reality that challenges Asian society. Along with such transformations, the family in Asia is also experiencing unprecedented changes, in terms of its structure, function and value. Prof. Osaki addresses inevitable socio-demographic changes shaping the societies in Asia and calls attention to the needs to strengthen inter-generational solidarity. In order to further expand the concept of Service-Learning throughout the Asia-Pacific Region, the 2^nd Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning, titled “Crossing Borders, Making Connections: Service-Learning in Diverse Communities” has been held in June, 2009. In this Special Issue, we will guide you through our 5-day conference, including the highlights, the accomplishments; the knowledge gained, the experience shared, and most importantly, the participation of our Service-Learning students.

為推動服務研習於亞太地區的發展，我們於2009年6月舉辦了第二屆亞太地區服務研習會議 - 「跨越界限，建立聯繫：在多元社區中實踐服務研習」。本特刊將回顧5天的會議點滴，當中包括：會議摘要及成果、交流的知識及經驗，當然還有參與學生的分享。

此年報以「凝聚社會資本」為主題，讓您感受到我們如何從心出發，透過各類型服務研習計劃表達對社區的關心。

「二人三足」鄉郊長者探訪計劃暨鄉郊長者關懷行動 : 鄉郊長者的需要及生活質素調查報告書, Asia-Pacific Institute Of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University 嶺南大學亞太老年學研究中心, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Hok Ka, Carol Ma, Yuk Yin Fung

APIAS Research Report 研究報告

本計劃期望能促使長者享有一個「積極樂頤年」，以提升其生活質素。計劃會透過連續性的探訪及兩次大型參觀活動，爲長者提供參與社會的機會。在探訪期間，義工會因應自己的才能及長者的興趣，爲長者安排一些學習班，如：英文、魔術及手工藝等，鼓勵他們終身學習。

另外，義工會透過閒聊的方式，了解長者的需要，從而提供相關的轉介；義工同時會關心長者的健康狀況，如：教導長者如何預防流行性感冒、叮囑長期病患者定時覆診等，以保持身體健康。

本計劃的目的可歸納爲以下四個：

• 透過連續性的探訪，爲屯門鄉郊的獨居和雙老長者送上關懷
• 在探訪過程中，利用問卷及閒談方式探討鄉郊長者的需要，並提供適當的支援/轉介
• 爲長者安排參觀嶺南大學及香港國際機場，鼓勵鄉郊長者參與社會
• 通過一系列的探訪和參觀活動，促進長者和青少年(嶺南大學學生義工）的溝通，從而建立跨代支援網絡

是次的調查主要希望

1. 探討鄉郊長者的需要；
2. 量度鄉郊長者的整體生活質素的轉變；
3. 評估長者和青少年的相互觀感的轉變；及
4. 了解他們對區內設施的意見和使用平安鐘的習慣。

Ancient Texts And Modern Education : Some Service-Learning Concepts In South Asia, Kalyan Ray

Fundamentally different from Freudian ideas of Self which predicate much of global -- and mostly Western -- analysis of societal concerns and issues, there is a profoundly influential Asian alternative to the view of the Self. Ancient Sanskrit texts, such as the Upanishads, offer very different foci and explication of the idea of the Self, its relation to education and to each others in society, and the fundamental connection to Service-Learning. These ancient Sanskrit tests have also deeply influenced early Buddhist philosophy. International Service Learning And Multi-Cultural Symbiosis : The Siliman-International Christian University S-L Model Programme, Takashi Nishio, Yutaka Sato

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

In this paper, Prof. Sato reports on the activities they have done so far to develop not only service-learning curriculum, programmes, and activities in their own institution (International Christian University) but also networking and exchange of students among institutions in East Asia. In particular, Prof. Sato will report on a Service-Learning model programme at Dumaguete, the Philippines, in which forty students and faculty/staff from six institutions in Asia participated to learn to live and do communal services together with people form different cultural backgrounds. The idea of Multi-Cultural Symbiosis was emphasized in this S-L Model Programme.
