Cultural Commitment And Attitudes Toward Seeking Counseling Services In African-Americans, Jessamine M. Montero
Cultural Commitment And Attitudes Toward Seeking Counseling Services In African-Americans, Jessamine M. Montero
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this project was to explore possible relations between African-American acculturation level and attitudes of seeking professional psychological help. A sample of 120 African-American residents of Huntington, WV, completed survey questionnaires designed to assess: cultural commitment levels; attitudes toward counseling; and awareness of the Prestera Center for Mental Health Services, a local mental health center. Cultural commitment levels were assessed by self-ratings of African-Americans to the Anglo- and African-American cultures, and to the specific Huntington Anglo- and African-American cultures; respondants also rated their perceptions of mental health professionals' commitment levels to the Anglo-, African-, Huntington Anglo-, and Huntington …

Welfare Policies And Racial Stereotypes: The Structural Construction Of A Model Minority, Mary E. Kelsey
Welfare Policies And Racial Stereotypes: The Structural Construction Of A Model Minority, Mary E. Kelsey
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Whereas the economic mobility observed among Asian Americans is often attributed to their cultural values, this article demonstrates the importance of state aid to the economic mobility of a community of Southeast Asian refugees living in California. Using data from a lengthy ethnographic study of rural Laotian refugees, the content and administration of social welfare programs offered political refugees is contrasted with the social policies extended toward other poor communities. As variations in social policies can constrain or facilitate economic mobility, the concrete impact of welfare state policies on different ethnic communities is a topic in need of further exploration.

[Review Of] David Levering Lewis. W.E.B. Dubois: Biography Of A Race, 1868-1919, Vernon J. Williams Jr
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In a stunning exhibition of biographical craftsmanship, David Levering Lewis narrates, for the years between 1868 and 1919, both the spectacular achievements -- and their import for intellectual life in our own times -- and the equally significant failings of one of the most important American intellectuals of the twentieth century. Lewis's erudite tome supercedes all of the previous biographical treatments of DuBois and will doubtlessly require an equally Herculean effort to match this phenomenal work. Indeed, the awesome task of concluding the latter part of DuBois's long, controversial, and complex life will be exhaustively challenging. Since any exhaustive review …
[Review Of] Herbert Hill And James E. Jones. Race In America: The Struggle For Equality, Otis L. Scott
[Review Of] Herbert Hill And James E. Jones. Race In America: The Struggle For Equality, Otis L. Scott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The predicament of race shapes the social and cultural landscape of this society. That this has been long true prompted Dr. W.E.B. DuBois to insightfully remark that "the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line, -- the relation of the darker to the lighter races ... in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea" (W. E.B. DuBois, Souls of Black Folk. New York: The Blue Heron Press, 1953, 13 ). DuBois was not offering a critique of race as an abstract sociological or cultural idea; he was critically commenting on how …

[Review Of] Anna Lee Walters. Talking Indian: Reflections On Survival And Writing, Elizabeth Mcneil
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Anna Lee Walters creates an interesting chronicle that is both personal and historical. As she writes of self and family, she also writes about a multitribal web of cultural beliefs and historical interactions with whites that have come to define tribal people today.
[Review Of] H. Henrietta Stockel. Women Of The Apache Nation: Voices Of Truth, Sally Mcbeth
[Review Of] H. Henrietta Stockel. Women Of The Apache Nation: Voices Of Truth, Sally Mcbeth
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
At a time when books about Native American women need to provide the reader with unromanticized images of strong women in their own right, Stockel’s book, Women of the Apache Nation, succeeds only partially. The sixty-two page historical introduction and the two shorter introductions to the Mescalero (New Mexico) and Fort Sill (Oklahoma) Apache, while important to situating the women’s narratives that follow, are flawed by inaccuracies, overly dependent on secondary sources, and replete with unnecessary references to historical male figures and male relatives. Stockel, for example, incorrectly uses the term ”Western pache” which does not include Mescalero or Fort …
[Review Of] Bill Ong Hing. Making And Remaking Asian America Through Immigration Policy, Jun Xing
[Review Of] Bill Ong Hing. Making And Remaking Asian America Through Immigration Policy, Jun Xing
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Bill Ong Hing's book has fulfilled a long-felt need in Asian American studies. Since the publication of Milton R. Konvitz's The Alien and Asiatic in American Law (1946), no comprehensive overview of how American immigration policy influenced Asian immigration has been published. The subject, however, represents one of the most important aspects of Asian American experience. Historically, the anti-Asiatic Exclusion Laws played a defining role in the evolution of Asian America. Today, the legacy of racist immigration policies continue to limit Asian Americans, and the current debate over immigration remains an issue of great importance for the communities.
Writing The Oral Tradition: Leslie Marmon Silko's Storyteller, Susan L. Rockwell
Writing The Oral Tradition: Leslie Marmon Silko's Storyteller, Susan L. Rockwell
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Scholars of oral traditions hold differing views regarding the viability of transcribing the oral to the written. This paper demonstrates that Leslie Marmon Silko is transcribing, and thus preserving, oral culture of the Native American in her book Storyteller. Through a close reading of the poem "Aunt Susie had certain phrases," Silko's attempts to convert the oral to the printed word without losing the nuances and vitality of the spoken word are analyzed. The analysis reveals that the required elements of a traditional oral performance (i.e., opening and closing narrative frames, verbal asides, repetition, emphasis on ritual and traditions) are …
Frozen In Place: European American Ideologies And The Inuit, Douglas J. Buege
Frozen In Place: European American Ideologies And The Inuit, Douglas J. Buege
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
It has been claimed by Hugh Brody that European Americans maintain strong ideological connections between Inuit people and the Arctic environments they inhabit. I expand upon this claim, giving three primary ideological connections that tie the Inuit directly to their environments. These are termed the natural, temporal, and material connections. Textual examples are given to illustrate each type of connection. I also show how each ideological connection serves to disempower the Inuit by situating them within the confines of "nature" while empowering European American patriarchs who conceive themselves as existing "outside of" or "beyond" nature. These three connections, working together …

A History Of Race Relations Social Science, Vernon J. Williams Jr.
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This essay argues that the inclusion of white women, African Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians into historiography is a fairly recent development ; and that the aforementioned development, which did not begin until the 1960s, has resulted in rigorous investigation into the racial thought of Franz Uri Boas, Robert Ezra Park, and Gunnar Myrdal and a hot debate in reference to their significance and influence on today's social sciences. Furthermore, the integration of African American history into the historiography of race relations social science has given impetus to the movement towards making American intellectual history more inclusive.

From Scholarship Girls To Scholarship Women: Surviving The Contradictions Of Class And Race In Academe, Gloria H. Cuadraz, Jennifer L. Pierce
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This article explores the dilemmas graduate education poses for women of working-class origin who come from different ethnic and racial backgrounds. It proceeds in a chronological narrative using examples from the authors' personal experiences to make general points about how the intricate web of class, race, and gender relations shaped their experiences in higher education. Both women -- Cucidraz, a Chicana, and Pierce, a white woman -- struggle with the feelings of alienation and marginality as outsiders within the academy as well as their material needs for financial support. Their personal narratives reveal, as well, how race shapes their experiences …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This issue of the journal has a wide variety of articles dealing with multiple dimensions of ethnicity. The first article by Arthur S. Evans, Jr. and Sara Torres focuses on the perceptions of domestic abuse among Mexican American and Anglo American women. More importantly, the paper deals with the role culture plays in the perception, definition, and interpretation of domestic abuse issues.
[Review Of] Clovis E. Semmes. Cultural Hegemony And African American Development, Carol Ward
[Review Of] Clovis E. Semmes. Cultural Hegemony And African American Development, Carol Ward
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The purpose of this book is to examine cultural aspects of hegemonic relations between White Americans and African Americans, a neglected topic which the author believes should provide the basis for African American Studies programs. Although Semmes establishes culture as the focus of his analysis, political and economic forces are clearly important for understanding the position of Black Americans in the changing social organization of the U.S. Defined as regularly in subjective states, culture is theorized as interacting with social organization, as institutional settings frame cultural expressions and vice versa.
[Review Of] Leonore Loeb Adler, Ed. Women In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Sudha Ratan
[Review Of] Leonore Loeb Adler, Ed. Women In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Sudha Ratan
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is a collection of essays by women writers from several countries including the United States, Great Britain, the former Soviet Union, India, China, Nigeria, and Thailand. These writers examine the interaction of biology, social role, and culture in shaping women's roles in different societies. They attempt to provide a broad overview of the conditions and the problems faced by women in their respective societies.
[Review Of] Velma Wallis. Two Old Women, Vanessa Holford
[Review Of] Velma Wallis. Two Old Women, Vanessa Holford
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Velma Wallis says of Two Old Women, it is “a story about my people and my past -- something about me that I could grasp and call mine.” She introduces her written story as an attempt to continue that which is rapidly being silenced by television and modern ”conveniences” -- the children who now seem uninterested in traditional tales to one day be able to call the legend theirs. In setting this tale to paper, she succeeds not only in her goal to interest future generations among her own people, but also in offering outside readers of all ages a …

[Review Of] Charles A. Eastman. Indian Heroes And Great Chieftains, Terry E. Huffman
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains was first published in 1918 and contains short biographical narratives on fifteen American Indian leaders. Included in the vignettes are such well-known individuals as Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull, and lesser recognized persons such as Tamahay and Two Strike. Most of the individuals are Lakota/Dakota but Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, Dull Knife and Little Wolf of the Northern Cheyenne, Roman Nose of the Southern Cheyenne, and Hole-in-the-Day of the Ojibwa are also included in the volume.

[Review Of] Usha Welaratna. Beyond The Killing Fields: Voices Of Nine Cambodian Survivors In America, Steven J. Gold
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Although approximately 150,000 Cambodians now reside in the United States, very little information has been published on this group. When available at all, descriptive and statistical data about Cambodians is generally lumped together with that of Laotians and Vietnamese in the category “Southeast Asian Refugees.” This is a grave shortcoming: first, because the Cambodians’ culture is quite different from that of other Southeast Asians -- making aggregate accounts of their experience inaccurate; and second, and perhaps even more important, is the fact that the Cambodian people have experienced one of the most horrible holocausts in modern history, making their ordeal …
