[Review Of] Clifton M. Jean. Behind The Eurocentric Veils: The Search For African Realities, Freddie G. Young
[Review Of] Clifton M. Jean. Behind The Eurocentric Veils: The Search For African Realities, Freddie G. Young
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This book represents a thoughtful critique of Eurocentric traditions of social and historical analysis. The principal thesis, advanced in the idea of moving along the same cultural ideals and the same dynamic forces as the west, is an exceptionally brilliant idea. Both the liberal and Marxist systems subsume Third World cultural processes under universalist theories of evolution that do not apply universally.
[Review Of] Chalmers Archer, Jr. Growing Up Black In Rural Mississippi, Aloma Mendoza
[Review Of] Chalmers Archer, Jr. Growing Up Black In Rural Mississippi, Aloma Mendoza
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Archer's book is a non-fictional account of the pain and anguish of one extended family's struggle and fight during the 1930s and 1940s to survive the racist south.
[Review Of] Rafael Castillo. Distant Journeys, Julie Schrader Villegas
[Review Of] Rafael Castillo. Distant Journeys, Julie Schrader Villegas
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Rafael Castillo's collection of short stories takes us to the borders, whether they be geographic or psychic, where ironic humor laced with existential angst always looms. His characters range from academic Chicanos negotiating identities, to gorilla freedom fighters in EI Salvador. Their commonality lies in their struggles to find self-agency and identity within a rearranged world.
[Review Of] Genaro M. Padilla. My History, Not Yours: The Formation Of Mexican American Autobiography, Susan L. Rockwell
[Review Of] Genaro M. Padilla. My History, Not Yours: The Formation Of Mexican American Autobiography, Susan L. Rockwell
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Genaro Padilla and University of Wisconsin Press should be commended for the publication of a much needed addition to the study of American autobiography, in general, and ethnic autobiography, in particular. Early Mexican American autobiographies remain largely ignored and forgotten. The importance of these autobiographies should not be ignored, however, especially with regard to the study of the West and Southwest. With this book, Padilla opens the door to the retrieval and study of these important historical documents.
[Review Of] Constance Wall Holt. Welsh Women: An Annotated Bibliography Of Women In Wales And Women Of Welch Descent In America, Martha A. Davies
[Review Of] Constance Wall Holt. Welsh Women: An Annotated Bibliography Of Women In Wales And Women Of Welch Descent In America, Martha A. Davies
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
To be a Welsh woman, it seems, was to be doubly doomed to obscurity. Not only were women a less-public sector of society, but there was "Welshness" to contend with. It has been a case of Bibliographic Ethnic Discrimination. Too often entries have read: "Women, Welsh, See Women, English." And this occurs in spite of the fact that Welsh, being Celts, are a distinct group with their own language and culture, though they have long been subject to English rule.
Race And The Selection Of Picture Books, Susan Schmitt
Race And The Selection Of Picture Books, Susan Schmitt
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of the study was to investigate preference among kindergarten and second grade children's selection of picture books. The study was conducted with a bi-racial student population of kindergarten and second grade students. The students were given free choice selection of white character books and black character books. Results indicated a difference between kindergarten and second grade students. Kindergarten children significantly preferred books of like-race characters. In second grade, there was no significant difference in the preference of books. The combined data of kindergarten and second grade showed a significant difference in the preference of books.

A Comparative Analysis Of Perceptions Of Land Between Environmentalists And Aboriginal Peoples, Rowan Greenlees
A Comparative Analysis Of Perceptions Of Land Between Environmentalists And Aboriginal Peoples, Rowan Greenlees
Theses : Honours
"We believe the same thing, regarding land, as the Aboriginals." This thesis has been undertaken to investigate the above statement, which I have frequently heard from environmentalists in informal conversation with them. To investigate this statement requires an analysis of all its possible meanings and underlying assumptions, and a comparison with the beliefs and perceptions regarding land that Aboriginal peoples uphold. Emphasis has been given to the word "same", as the understandings of this: word will indicate how this statement needs to be qualified. As a person who has interests in both environmental issues and those that concern indigenous people, …
A Comparative Study Of The Migration Experiences Of Filipino And Thai Brides In Western Australia, Belinda Greensill
A Comparative Study Of The Migration Experiences Of Filipino And Thai Brides In Western Australia, Belinda Greensill
Theses : Honours
Bride migration which includes unpaid labour migration is a new development in international labour migration. The factors which have contributed to recent increases in bride migration from developing counties in the South East Asian region to post-industrialised countries include changes in the international economic system and the international division of labour, and popular stereotypes of Filipino and Thai women, and conservative notions of women1s domestic roles which are prevalent in Australia. This study focuses on Filipino and Thai bride migration to Western Australian within the context of international labour migration. Most of the literature on Filipino and Thai female migration …

[Introduction To] From Civilization To Segregation: Social Ideals And Social Control In Southern Rhodesia, 1890-1934, Carol Summers
Bookshelf
This study examines the social changes that took place in Southern Rhodesia after the arrival of the British South Africa Company in the 1890s. Summer’s work focuses on interactions among settlers, the officials of the British South America Company and the administration, missionaries, humanitarian groups in Britain, and the most vocal or noticeable groups of Africans. Through this period of military conquest and physical coercion, to the later attempts at segregationist social engineering, the ideals and justifications of Southern Rhodesians changed drastically. Native Policy, Native Education policies, and, eventually, segregationist Native Development policies changed and evolved as the white and …
