Bin Laden’S Formation Of The Self: A Comparative Analysis, Robyn Torok Jan 2011

Bin Laden’S Formation Of The Self: A Comparative Analysis, Robyn Torok

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

Following the 9/11 and similar al-Qaeda attacks, one of the principle questions we ask as a Western Society is why? Researchers on religious terrorism generally agree that psychopathic labelling and descriptions are both unhelpful and inaccurate. Instead what is needed is a look at the broader sociological context. As a result, this paper utilises Foucault’s technologies of the self (formation of the self) as a framework to explore the self transformations and teleology of Osama bin Laden’s actions based on a comparative analysis with the biblical character of Moses. This analysis will include a number of important parallels which include: …

Exploiting Borders: The Political Economy Of Local Backlash Against Undocumented Immigrants, Jamie Longazel, Benjamin Fleury-Steiner

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Four years prior to Arizona's passage of one of the most far-reaching pieces of anti-Latino immigrant legislation signed into law in decades,3 demands to "seal off the border"4 were being made thousands of miles from the U.S.-Mexico divide. In 2006, Hazleton, Pennsylvania, passed equally harsh legislation aimed at keeping undocumented immigrants out of their community. During this time, commentators described the local backlash in Hazleton and other small cities across the United States as akin to "the opening of a deep and profound fissure in the American landscape" 5 wherein "all immigration politics is local." 6 Yet, as the so-called …

Through a qualitative content analysis, three main themes emerged that describe the essence of the practice of medical family therapy: (1) The patient’s multisystemic experience of disease, (2) treatment is about caring, not just caregiving, and (3) elevating the patient as collaborator in the care team.

School-Based Extracurricular Activity Involvement And Adolescent Self-Esteem: A Growth-Curve Analysis, Lisa A. Kort-Butler, Kellie J. Hagewen

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Research on adolescent self-esteem indicates that adolescence is a time in which individuals experience important changes in their physical, cognitive, and social identities. Prior research suggests that there is a positive relationship between an adolescent’s participation in structured extracurricular activities and well-being in a variety of domains, and some research indicates that these relationships may be dependent on the type of activities in which adolescents participate. Building on previous research, a growth-curve analysis was utilized to examine self-esteem trajectories from adolescence (age 14) to young adulthood (age 26). Using 3 waves of data from National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health …

Music Videos As Social Commentary: A Sociological Analysis Of Lady Gaga, Jacob Allen Everett Rudy Jan 2011

Music Videos As Social Commentary: A Sociological Analysis Of Lady Gaga, Jacob Allen Everett Rudy

Honors Program Theses

Since the television channel Music Television (MTV) aired its first music video on August 1, 1981, music videos have come to serve as vehicles for music artists from all genres. Using these productions as a way to simultaneously promote a song and a particular artist has proven to be successful means with which to build a career in the American music industry. However, as with all cultural artifacts, music videos contain much more information than simply visual interpretation of songs. They are rich in sources with which sociologists can further understand social norms and institutions. Through the analysis of music …

Kembalinya Subyek: Sosiologi Memaknai Kembali Multikulturalisme, Lucia Ratih Kusumadewi

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The idea of modern society that has been dominated for long time by political idea (read: state) fails since state has lost her control over economy. The state loses as well control over her socio-cultural legitimacy while society became more plural. Sociologists in 80’s inspired by Tourianian’s idea, find that in an ‘ultra-modern’ society, the redefinition on the idea of society, modernity and rationality are inevitable and ‘the return of the Subject’ shall be a main agenda for further sociological analysis. In this context how multiculturalism might be construed? This article has been in attempt to explore the reconstitution of …

Market Forces And Indigenous Resistance Paradigms, Maggie Walter Apr 2010

Market Forces And Indigenous Resistance Paradigms, Maggie Walter

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

The pervasive force in the relationship between the nation-state and Australian Indigenous peoples during the 1990s and 2000s was, and is, neoliberalism. Free market ideals became the dominant political philosophy and Indigenous people were coerced into a political ‘experimental’ cutting of a neoliberal template into the fabric of Indigenous life. The pairing of market ideology with concerted efforts to de-power Indigenous groups and people align, at least thematically, the Indigenous experience of neoliberalism with that of a social movement. This article details the entwined story of explicit Indigenous resistance and activism and the how and what of the infiltration of …

Through case study on one microfinance institution namely lumbung pitih nagari located in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, this study found that the existence of the micro credit institute has been influenced by several factors such as state regulations. In 1997, the central bank of Indonesia (BI) carried out regulatory reforms in order to reduce the risk of bank failures. This regulation in fact has weakened the role of microfinance institutions in giving financial services to small-medium enterprises (SMEs). However, in the reformation era, …

Organizational performance has always been viewed based on physical capital, such as money or assets. This is certainly not adequate because it ignores other aspects, such as intelligence, cooperation, trust, and so forth. POPIS (physical capital, organizational capital, political capital, intellectual capital, sociocultural capital) conception offers a more comprehensive perspective on the various capital that affect organizational performance. But, in fact, among the various capital, there are some capital that is more dominant than the other capital-capital. SBW and KGJ cooperative performance clearly demonstrate the dominant role of socio-cultural capital in influencing the success of those two institutions.

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Exiting street-level prostitution is a complex, convoluted process. Few studies have described this process within any formal conceptual framework. This article reviews two general models and two prostitution-specific models and their applicability to the exiting process. Barriers encountered as women attempt to leave the streets are identified. Based on the four models, the barriers, the prostitution literature, and the authors’ experience with prostituted women, a new integrated six-stage model that is comprehensive in scope and sensitive to women’s attempts to exit prostitution is offered as a foundation for continued research on the process of women leaving the streets.

Black on Black victimization amongst inner-city African American youth is a well-documented phenomenon. Less understood are the shared lived experiences of inner-city, middle-aged African Americans who have been victims of crimes perpetrated by African American youth. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived, shared experience of this population. Social ecological theory, psychological sense of community, and crisis theory served as the theoretical frameworks for the study. A qualitative method of phenomenological inquiry was used to gain insight into the meaning ascribed to the victimization experiences, as well as the resulting thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and life-impacting implications.
