This qualitative study aimed to capture community perspectives of the risks and protective factors for social emotional development and mental health of young children in low-income South Africa settings, and was conducted as one component of a larger study with the ultimate aim of co-designing the Mazi Umntanakho (‘know your child’) digital tool. Twenty focus group discussions (n = 154, 97% female) were held with staff of community-based organisations (CBOs) and community health worker (CHW) programmes in urban and rural sites from four geographical regions. Data were analysed thematically, and grouped according to components of nurturing care (responsive caregiving, safety …

OBJECTIVE: The study's aim was to explore the experiences and perceptions of attending and resident physicians regarding the inclusion of gender and sexuality content in medical school curricula and professional practice in Israel.

METHODS: This cross-sectional survey targeted a diverse group of physicians across various specializations …

From Theory To Screen: Strain In The Gallagher Experience, Caroline H. Peabody

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper applies Agnew’s General Strain Theory to the hit television series Shameless (US), primarily focusing on three of the show’s central characters. The paper argues that the characters’ criminal and deviant actions can be attributed to strain, as defined by Robert Agnew’s General Strain Theory (GST). The paper provides a basic overview of GST as well as a synopsis of the show before implementing the theory into an analysis of the show. In addition, this paper explores how criminality highlights the themes of Shameless and acts as an implicit call to action to address strain variables in underprivileged communities. …

Air Untuk Semua: Tantangan Kebijakan Sosial Pada Distribusi Air Di Komunitas Lokal, Rahmalia Rifandini

Water is a non-economic good that undoubtedly plays an important role in improving people's well-being. Global data shows that the agricultural sector is the most water- consuming base of life, especially for local communities that rely on agriculture. Increasing food production in the future along with population growth will potentially demand sustainable water resource management. Water regulation plays an important role in determining the allocation, distribution and use of water resources. Lack of availability and access to water creates mutual vulnerability among environmental and social ecosystems. The legitimacy crisis of water governance is a major issue faced by lower-level bureaucracies …

Climate change poses significant challenges to vulnerable coastal communities in Indonesia. As a welfare state, the Indonesian government is expected to safeguard these vulnerable groups through policies that promote their welfare and sustainable livelihoods. However, current policies create a paradox. This article explores this paradox: on the one hand, Indonesia adheres to the welfare state principle, which demands that all government actions be grounded in law, ensuring public safety and welfare. On the other hand, the policies focus on exploiting natural resources, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of coastal communities, particularly in the face of climate change. The article employs a normative …

Adolescents and Young People

Social and structural determinants of health (SSDoH) significantly impact equity among young people aged 10–24 in the US. Prior research shows that connectedness and support in school, family, and peer environments are crucial determinants of youth health and well-being. Understanding local variations in these relationships and their impact on health equity, while vital for policy and investment, remains a challenge. Council researchers explored relationships between select SSDoH and health outcomes among young people at sub-state levels to assess the potential of national survey data to inform decision-making & improve health equity.
