Kant's Political Theory And Philosophy Of History, Philip J. Kain
Kant's Political Theory And Philosophy Of History, Philip J. Kain
Philosophy
Kant combined two traditional approaches in his political theory, reference to a utopian and ideal universal moral order in common with Plato, Thomas More, and Jean Jacques Rousseau and an analysis of the pursuit of individual self-interest leading to the establishment of laws that enable citizens to satisfy their interests, like Thomas Hobbes, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Adam Smith. Kant focused on the international level, arguing that following the categorical imperative would arrange a society equitably while national commercial self-interest would lead to a league of nations to adjudicate international disputes. Kant was unique in providing both a theory of an …
The Peaceful Resolution Of Norfolk's Integration Crisis Of 1958-1959, Nancy Parker Ford
The Peaceful Resolution Of Norfolk's Integration Crisis Of 1958-1959, Nancy Parker Ford
History Theses & Dissertations
In 1958 Norfolk experienced one of the most serious crises in its long history when six of its public secondary schools were closed by the governor. The closings were a result of Virginia's massive resistance program and forced 10,000 students to seek alternative education for five months or abandon their education entirely. Interviews with major participants in the crisis as well as investigation of newspaper accounts and editorials, personal papers of participants, city and School Board documents, and major works on the period reveal the factors involved in Norfolk's peaceful approach to integration. A comparison with the situation in Little …

When an ecumenical gathering of 30 clergy arid lay persons circled Jorge, a Guatemalan refugee, on Sept 15, 1983, in front of the altar at Cross Church, Milwaukee, and an ecumenical congregation of 250 stood in solidarity with them to prayerfully inaugurate sanctuary at Cross Church, we at Cross Church knew we had done the right thing. We were convinced that the Spirit had been leading. We felt confident that our action was part of the coming of Christ's Kingdom of justice and peace.

AMERICA'S LARGEST RELIGION IS more often blamed for creating our environmental problems than credited with helping to solve them. Indeed, ever since historian Lynn White, Jr., published "The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis" (Science magazine in 1967), the anti-earth nature of Christianity has become standard doctrine in environmental circles. (Mother Earth News, Nov/Dec issue, repeated this truism in their "Open Road" column.)
The quote above from the first chapter of Genesis forms the backbone of White's-and others'-arguments that Christianity is an anti-ecological religion. And certainly, the notion of subduing the earth and taking dominion over its creatures does sound …

Armies of both liberation and occupation have incited fear throughout history in the lands through which they marched or in which they were posted. Since World War II, an increasingly militarized world has continued to suffer under the power of this military presence.
Strong cries of protest are now not only being raised, but are also finally being heard. Not surprisingly, they are women's voices. Women worldwide, struggling for their own human rights, are also expressing the rage and horror of their people who witness the ravishment of their culture, their land, and their lives.

Capital, along with labor, is a fundamental building block of American society. Together they help create the industry services, and information we need to live in the present and to build for the future.
But what kind of future? The purpose of this article is to help you shape a healthy future through socially responsible investing.
You can help influence the way our economy uses capital, regardless of your financial position - whether you are just beginning to accumulate capital, whether you have substantial wealth in a multitude of investments, or even if you have no money to invest.

Rickie Thompson and his friends were surprised by the mob as they cut through the Harvard Medical Complex from Brigham Circle to Louis Pasteur Avenue on their way to Boston English High School. The three black youths, earnest sophomores in the college engineering track of the 1,100-student, all-male high school, had expected a typical day. Rickie had even stayed up past eleven finishing geometry homework that now lay, apparently useless, in his briefcase. To be sure, there had been rumors of a walkout the day before-something to do with the seniors who had been suspended for wearing dashikis. But Rickie …

Marx, Justice, And The Dialectic Method, Philip J. Kain
Philosophy
An interesting controversy has recently been provoked by Allen Wood. He argues that capitalism, for Marx, "cannot be faulted as far as justice is concerned." For Marx, the concept of justice belonging to any society is rooted in, grows out of, and expresses that particular society's mode of production. Justice is not a standard by which human reason in the abstract measures actions or institutions--there is no eternal, unchanging norm of justice. Each social epoch gives rise to its own standard; each generally lives up to it; and each must be measured by this standard alone. Thus, in Wood's view, …

Allegations by Lutheran and Presbyterian congregations that body-bug-packing undercover agents of the United States government violated their constitutional rights were dismissed in mid October by a federal judge in Phoenix, AZ.
What it means, commented the Rev. James A. Oines, pastor of Alzona Lutheran Church, Phoenix, one of the congregations that was infiltrated, is that the federal government "can come into any church, any time, with a tape recorder, and without a warrant. And they have said they would do it."

When Rev. Brian (Red) Burchfield went to South Africa, he believed he and his co-pastor/wife Susan were missionaries to that racially-divided nation. Now, however, he understands that he was meant all along to be a missionary to the U.S.
Arriving in Cape Town last January to serve several, small congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (ELCSA), Burchfield said they were met with two responses: "a warm and gracious reception and ... an attitude that took for granted that we would be going back to the United States and beginning our real work."

Many minority ethnic/racial groups in the United States experience higher-than-average unemployment rates, but none approaches the level of unemployment among Native Americans. A report prepared last fall by the Full Employment Action Council, the Lutheran Council U.S. A. and other sponsors documents the ''horrendous" and "devastating" rates of joblessness among both reservation and urban Indians.
In addition, the report, "American Indian Unemployment: Confronting a Distressing Reality, notes that federal assistance programs have been drastically reduced in recent years, leaving Native Americans with income and education levels far below national averages.

In 1850, Charles Kingsley lightheartedly told a friend that "The 'Christian Socialist' sells about 1500, and is spreading; but not having been yet cursed by any periodical, I fear it is doing no good."(l) Writing under the pseudonym 'Parson Lot," this young enthusiast did not have much longer to wait for that token of "success." Just two years later, in his defensive Who Are the Friends of Order? Kingsley acknowledged that the Christian Socialists were now besieged on all sides, and had "to hear Edinburgh Reviewers complaining of them for wishing to return to feudalism and medieval bigotry while Quarterly …

The Lutheran churches are in Indian country.
Hundreds of Lutheran congregations are within 10 miles of an Indian reservation. Hundreds more are in cities with large Indian populations, cities like Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, Seattle, Phoenix, Milwaukee and San Francisco.
Most Indian people, either on reservations or in cities, live in poverty and suffer more unemployment, poorer education, higher rates of illness and less opportunity than any other segment of society.
