ปัจจุบันภาษาอังกฤษมีบทบาทมากขึ้นทั้งในสังคมไทยและสังคมโลก การสลับภาษาในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ระหว่างภาษาไทยกับภาษาอังกฤษเป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่พบได้บ่อยในสังคมไทย ผู้พูดภาษาไทยมีความคิดเห็นที่หลากหลาย ทั้งสนับสนุนและไม่สนับสนุนการสลับภาษาระหว่างภาษาไทยกับอังกฤษ งานวิจัยนี้จึงต้องการสำรวจทัศนคติของผู้พูดสองภาษาไทย-อังกฤษต่อรูปประโยคที่มีการสลับภาษาแบบต่าง ๆ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาทัศนคติของผู้พูดสองภาษาไทย-อังกฤษต่อรูปประโยคภาษาเดียว และรูปประโยคที่มีการสลับภาษาแบบต่าง ๆ และเพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างทัศนคติต่อการสลับภาษากับอายุ ระดับพื้นเพทางภาษาอังกฤษ และแวดวงอาชีพของผู้พูด ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีการอำพรางเสียงพูดเป็นเครื่องมือในการเก็บข้อมูล โดยให้ผู้เข้าร่วมการวิจัยจำนวนทั้งสิ้น 80 คน คัดเลือกโดยการสุ่มตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจงตามชั้นภูมิประกอบด้วยผู้พูดสองภาษาไทย-อังกฤษในรุ่นอายุแซด (Generation Z) จำนวน 40 คน และในรุ่นอายุวาย (Generation Y) 40 คน ประเมินทัศนคติด้านความน่าดึงดูดทางสังคมและสถานภาพทางสังคมของเสียงพูดทดสอบผ่านการให้คะแนนด้วยมาตราวัดความแตกต่างทางความหมายในแบบสอบถาม และแสดงความคิดเห็นเพิ่มเติมในคำถามปลายเปิดแบบกรอบบรรยายความ ผลพบว่า รูปประโยคที่ใช้ภาษาไทยอย่างเดียวเป็นรูปประโยคที่ได้รับทัศนคติเชิงบวกสูงที่สุด รองลงมาคือ รูปประโยคที่มีการสลับภาษาระหว่างประโยค รูปประโยคที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษอย่างเดียว รูปประโยคที่แทรกคำเดี่ยวภาษาอังกฤษ รูปประโยคที่มีการสลับภาษาด้วยวลี และรูปประโยคที่มีการสลับเป็นก้อนคำตามลำดับ ตัวแปรอายุ ระดับพื้นเพทางภาษาอังกฤษ และแวดวงอาชีพมีความสัมพันธ์กับทัศนคติต่อประโยคที่มีการการสลับภาษาอยู่บ้าง ทว่าความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าวไม่มีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ อย่างไรก็ตาม คำตอบที่ได้จากแบบสอบถามปลายเปิดแสดงให้เห็นว่า ความถี่ในการสัมผัสกับรูปประโยคที่มีการสลับภาษามี อิทธิพลกับทัศนคติต่อรูปประโยคที่มีการสลับภาษา ผู้สัมผัสกับรูปประโยคดังกล่าวมากผ่านสื่อประเภทต่าง ๆ หรือในชีวิตประจำวันมีแนวโน้มยอมรับ รวมถึงมองรูปประโยคนั้นในเชิงบวกมากกว่าคนที่สัมผัสกับรูปประโยคดังกล่าวน้อย

Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. This may be one of the reasons why second language learners frequently encounter difficulties in mastering the English present perfect. As Yoshimura et al. This research aims to investigate metaphorical patterns in the US legalization of same-sex marriage discourse to shed light on how metaphor is employed to conceptualize same-sex marriage controversies. To this end, a specialized corpus which contains 254 news articles published in 2015 was compiled. The metaphorical expressions in the corpus were analyzed with both "Conceptual Metaphor Theory" (CMT) and "Conceptual Blending Theory" (CBT) to cover not simply the pedestrian uses of metaphors, but also the wild and creative expressions. The objective of this research study is to examine Thai learners’ comprehension of English passive sentences focusing on Thai thùuk-passives, which are usually found in adversative contexts (Po-ngam, 2008; Prasithrathsint, 2010) which are prototypical in thùuk-passives and can also be used in neutral contexts (Prasithrathsint, 2001, 2006), and on be-passives in English, which can be found in all contexts. A prevalent view in monolingual first language acquisition is that children acquire their native language. One’s first reaction is, “well, yes, how could it be otherwise?” The study of ‘heritage’ learners suggests a reconsideration of that view. Polinsky and Scontras (Polinsky & Scontras, 2019) present a fascinating review of the phenomena characterizing heritage learners and propose several underlying mechanisms to account for those phenomena. Their review encourages a broader view of language acquisition. To me it suggests that variability is the norm.

The complexity of an inflection class system is the average extent to which elements in the system inhibit motivated inferences about the realization of lexemes’ paradigm cells. Research shows that systems tend to exhibit relatively low complexity in this sense. However, representations of inflectional systems tend to include only affixal and regular patterns, leaving questions about how irregular patterns and non-affixal ‘layers’ of inflectional exponence affect the complexity of a system. Abstract:

We have extracted c. 2 million tokens of vowels from a rigorous sample of 63 speakers across the American South in an NSF-funded project for forced alignment and automatic formant extraction. We show how our vowel measurements across the whole region differ from national mean F1/F2 scores. We contrast men and women, and African Americans and non- African Americans, within the Southern region.

This study explored locations, programs, and content of graduate education in business communication to provide guidance for prospective graduate students interested in becoming business communication faculty.

The researchers conducted a survey of business communication scholars, drawing on the backgrounds and knowledge of those who currently teach and research business communication.

Findings indicate that 93 universities offer programs supporting graduate business communication education. This number dwarfs the 12 previously documented programs. These 93 programs are rarely called “business communication.” More respondents received training in business communication practice in master’s programs than in doctoral programs, while more respondents received training in pedagogy …

Contextual Information In Social How-To Questions That Initiate Documentation, Matt Baker

This study introduces social question-and-answer (SQA) documentation to technical and professional communication scholarship. It conceptualizes SQA as interactive, user-generated documentation and describes contextual information types within social how-to questions that initiate documentation. It also explores whether contextual information associates with answers that complete the interactive documentation. Results reliably describe 15 information types based on content analysis of 3,529 contextual information types from 500 questions. Exploratory statistical analysis suggests that askers may increase answerability by including less speculative thought, more error messages, and less general situation information. Learning to program can be a novel experience. The rigidity of programming can be at odds with beginning programmer's existing perceptions, and the concepts can feel entirely unfamiliar. These observations motivated this research, which explores two major questions: What factors influence how novices learn programming? and How can analogy by more appropriately leveraged in programming education?

This Article challenges this new prevailing wisdom, puts legal corpus linguistics in the context of other meaning-making technologies, and suggests an approach for analyzing any technology of language in the law. One of my aims is to caution against technological exceptionalism—a view that computerized, automated, or big-data approaches are somehow special, perhaps more trustworthy, less subjective, and most likely to succeed. Rather, I argue that we should ask the same questions and make the same demands of any method of interpretation.

We examined the relationship between cognitive and linguistic abilities in bilingual children (English – Spanish). In particular, we measured the effect of attentional control (the ability to maintain an operative goal, and goal-relevant information, in the face of distraction) and educational experience (amount of time reading) on reading ability (the ability to recognize words and discard misspelled non-words). This paper investigates the similarities and differences between three sub-registers of Japanese recipe texts: cookbook recipes, online commercial recipes written/edited by professionals, and online usergenerated recipes. Past studies on Japanese recipes do not distinguish different sub-registers, and they tend to focus on a single feature. The present study of the sub-registers examines a group of frequently appearing linguistic features and uncovers functional links between observed features and situational characteristics. The language of early bilingual Spanish-English speakers in the United States is often distinct from that of monolingually raised native speakers of Spanish. This study analyzes the usage of the aspectual distinction in the past tense among 23 early Spanish-English bilingual speakers and 9 monolingually raised native speakers of Mexican Spanish. The participants engaged in a role-play in order to elicit a past-tense verbal form, either preterite or imperfect, for 15 test items. The results show that as level of proficiency in Spanish increases, the level of consensus with the responses of the monolingually raised native speakers of Spanish increases. …

The term religiolect was coined by Benjamin Hary (1992, xiii) to describe a variety of language used by a distinct religious community, originally within the context of the Jewish linguistic spectrum. Religion has been shown to play an important role in various aspects of language, such as Arabic loanword adoption among Telugu speakers (Salami 2010), Persian loanwords and greetings among English-speaking Bahá’is (Masumian 2015), fluency in Sanskrit (Christian 1976), language choice among Hindus in the United States (Pandharipande 2010), maintenance of Hakka in East Malaysia (Ding and Goh 2020), and prevalence of linguistic fossils in Jewish Malayalam (Gamliel 2017). “Christianese,” …

We investigate low/back vowels /u, oʊ, ʊ, ɔ, ɑ/ in Southern American English (SAE).

Research on SAE has analyzed changes in position over generational time.

Most work on trajectories is limited to impressionistic coding (“loss of upgliding”) or reduces trajectories to summary statistics (vector length, rate of change).

We analyze both the position and the shape of back vowels’ formant trajectories in apparent time, using new data from the Digital Archive of Southern Speech (DASS).

Dynamic written corrective feedback (DWCF) is a pedagogical approach that offers meaningful, manageable, constant, and timely corrective feedback on student writing (Hartshorn et al., 2010). It emphasizes indirect and comprehensive written error correction on short, daily writing assignments. Numerous studies have demonstrated that its use can lead to fewer language errors among undergraduate and pre-matriculated college writers (see Kurzer, 2018).
