Author rights underpin many scholarly communication activities. For authors to openly distribute their work, and thereby enjoy great reach and impact, retaining the rights necessary to do so is essential. However, author rights may not be something familiar to authors. In cases where an author is working with a publisher who may not be supportive of these rights by default, they may not feel confident advocating on their own behalf. Libraries are well positioned to provide services that inform and support authors in efforts to retain their rights. In doing so, libraries can additionally nurture a more sustainable scholarly ecosystem. …

COVID-19 forced workers around the world to face the realities of closed buildings, precarious employment situations, and challenges to their well-being. This article will showcase how library workers’ resilience during COVID-19 depended on people, not buildings, and a people-first public relations strategy was employed to reveal that distinction. This supplemental presentation slide deck was created to accompany the chapter "Data Management Failures: Teaching the Importance of DMPs through Cautionary Examples" in the ACRL Data Literacy Cookbook (2022). Researchers frequently express frustration when confronted with Data Management Plan (DMP) requirements, particularly when drafting or completing a grant application. This sense of annoyance is further fueled by a too-common view that the DMP is “yet another hurdle” that researchers need to confront during the grant writing process. Books play an essential role in scholarly communication, notably but not only within the Social Sciences and Humanities. Open science benefits the quality and value of research and scholarship. If open access is to benefit society as widely as possible, it is logical to include academic books. In a 2019 briefing paper, Science Europe reported that: “Open access to academic books must be considered in the wider open access policies developed by research institutions, funders, and governments.”

Classification schemes for scientific activity and publications underpin a large swath of research evaluation practices at the organizational, governmental, and national levels. Several research classifications are currently in use, and they require continuous work as new classification techniques becomes available and as new research topics emerge. Convolutional neural networks, a subset of “deep learning” approaches, have recently offered novel and highly performant methods for classifying voluminous corpora of text. This article benchmarks a deep learning classification technique on more than 40 million scientific articles and on tens of thousands of scholarly journals. This program presents the result of an IMLS-funded, mixed-methods study that investigated the scholarly communication programming and staffing priorities among M1 (Master's Colleges and Universities – Larger programs) libraries. Using a complex research life cycle to frame discussion, twenty librarians from M1 institutions participated in focus groups and provided structured information on their libraries' scholarly communication program, development, and staffing. Scholarly communication service and support among M1 institutions continue to grow and develop within the context of limited budgets and staffing. Institutional repositories remain a crucial tool for promoting, displaying, and encouraging open access to scholarly research. Institutional repository webpages can help deliver pertinent information about scholarly communication to visitors and authors. Scholarly communication aims to promote a more open, equitable, and sustainable scholarly ecosystem. Building a coherent synergy between scholarly communication services and open distribution through an institution’s repository benefits the user community by facilitating an efficient and effective portal. In Spring 2020, higher education institutions began implementing COVID-related precautions. While course delivery was most influenced by a variety of urgent decisions, also affected were events that were originally (and traditionally) scheduled to take place in-person that semester. While many events were cancelled outright, some were rescheduled or shifted online. At the same time, a very robust ecosystem of science communication has been built in the Latin-American region, one that is intrinsically open, non-commercial and academy-owned. In May 2019, the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana was awarded a $525,000 grant from Lilly Endowment to improve student success and retention by supporting the use of open course materials across the 24 private institutional members. Since then, the PALSave administration team has reached over 100 faculty members across Indiana, created an adoption pilot program, and received over 40 faculty reviews for the Open Textbook Library. Now, PALSave is developing a publishing program, with full funding for five textbook creations over five years. This presentation will identify new methods for in the libraries student employment program related to Open Access repository work. The hands on learning opportunities are focused on publishing production workflows, including: CV checking; author rights and permissions for depositing faculty papers in the UTA’s institutional repository; and creating a research metrics report to provide alternative impact measurements of the faculty’s publications in support of tenure and promotion packet of materials. Funded by a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Foundations Grant, the UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture’s “Mapping Renewal” pilot project focused on creating access to and providing spatial context to archival materials related to racial segregation and urban renewal in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1954-1989.
