This unit focuses on strategies and tactics for audience engagement and outreach, with the goal of extending the impact of publishing organizations, publication portfolios and series, or individual publications. We will discuss approaches to engage faculty and students in the campus community, the local community, and other communities of interest. We define community engagement as interaction or collaboration with a community of interest. This involves reciprocity. Outreach, on the other hand, describes activities that are provided to, intended for, or done in communities.

We will review how changes in technology, consumer behavior, and higher education influence nonprofit and for-profit scholarly publishing, highlighting the changing role of libraries, the rise of online bookselling, the growth of Open Access (OA) publishing models, the expansion of self-publishing, changes in discovery, the ubiquity of social media, the impact of metadata, competition for reader attention, and the changing definitions of “publication” and “scholarship.” Participants will consider the implications of each trend for library publishing.

Pursuant to the University of California (UC) Council of University Librarian’s (CoUL)1 3 August 2017 charge, this Pathways to OA Working Group2 has identified the current universe of Open Access (OA) approaches, and has analyzed the suite of strategies available for effectuating those approaches. Each approach described within this Pathways document offers unique and, in some cases, overlapping challenges, opportunities, and room for experimentation. The strategies examined here create space and freedom for the campuses to pursue both individualized and connected paths toward a large-scale transition to OA—though as we highlight below, collective action on implementing the strategies is likely …

Despite growing interest in Open Access (OA) to scholarly literature, there is an unmet need for large-scale, up-to-date, and reproducible studies assessing the prevalence and characteristics of OA. We address this need using oaDOI, an open online service that determines OA status for 67 million articles. We use three samples, each of 100,000 articles, to investigateOAin three populations: (1) all journal articles assigned a Crossref DOI, (2) recent journal articles indexed in Web of Science, and (3) articles viewed by users of Unpaywall, an open-source browser extension that lets users find OA articles using oaDOI. How are novice researchers to evaluate library resources in a topic for which they have limited prior knowledge? Kuhlthau has described two phases in a typical student research process: exploring and documenting. This poster suggests two familiar metaphors that provide clues to evaluating library-mediated sources. During the exploration phase, the metaphor of the map is discussed. What makes for a good map? Many of these same characteristics should be present in the sources that are accessed. This report summarizes results from research with the professionals who make up the software preservation community about how their understanding of copyright intersects with their preservation mission. Professionals typically face significant challenges from perceived copyright barriers. They tend to assume that a license or other express permission from a copyright holder is required before embarking on a wide variety of preservation activities, and typically find that such permissions are difficult or impossible to obtain. The study’s aim is twofold: first to determine the extent to which Australian library and information professionals produce research literature (specifically journal articles); and second to explore the status of the use of research literature by library and information science (LIS) practitioners as evidence for their practice. All articles published in the field of LIS in 2015 by Australian authors were analysed and seven interviews were conducted with Australian librarians. This chapter outlines the process of creating a permanent online presence from a curated gallery exhibition. Creating an open access version of the exhibition on an institution’s repository preserves the experience for the future and extends its engagement to a growing online community of students, interested community members, and others beyond campus. Through the use of video and audio, as well as images and documents, we strive to create an equally engaging experience for those who are unable to attend the original installation in person. By its nature design thinking combines creative and critical thinking that is imperative to organizing ideas and improving situations. Design thinking allows libraries to take an iterative approach to exploring a complex problem-space, and generate consensus around a potential solution, all while providing artifacts and documentation of the process. In libraries, design thinking is most commonly employed in the design of spaces or services. However, inspired by Open Access Week, we engaged these strategies to collaboratively deconstruct Western Libraries’ current policies related to open access.

The study aimed to study the perception on various factors of academic parameters to deposit in the Institutional Repositories System. Majorities of the institutions had institutional repositories and three fourth of the respondents were depositing their works in their institutional repositories. The main purpose of the paper is to study the publishing trends of the open access religious journals available in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). The data were collected online from the Directory of Open Access Journals and quantitative method was applied for data analysis. The data were collected in December 2017 and later presented in tabular forms to reveal the findings. The findings show that 119 religious journals are registered in the DOAJ, published from the 27 countries by 114 publishing agencies in 14 languages.
