Over the past decade, the University Libraries' Digital Collections have grown from an assemblage of discrete projects into two distinct programs that curate, manage, and publish digitized and born-digital materials online for educational and scholarly uses by Grand Valley State University's community and the wider public.

As these collections have grown, the support for creating, sharing, and preserving these materials has expanded from the Special Collections & University Archives into Systems and Technology Services, Knowledge Access and Resource Management Services, and Scholarly Communications, which manages the Libraries' other Digital Collection program, consisting of the Institutional Repository (IR) and a suite …

First-year students completing Musselman Library’s portion of the fall 2018 Charting Your Course (CYC) orientation received one of these passports before beginning the activity. After visiting each of the Library departments and learning about work staff members do there, students received a passport stamp in order to track their progress.

The DigitalCommons is the “institutional repository” for UNL. It’s function is to gather the intellectual output of the university for online public access. It was established in 2005, and now holds 99,000 papers, making it the 3rd largest in the United States, trailing only the University of California system (190,000) and the University of Michigan (120,000). Studies have shown that scholars in the Global South are under represented in top international peer-reviewed social and medical sciences journals.

The Global South refers to African, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries who are also members of the Group of 77. The intergovernmental organisation of mainly developing countries is used to identify countries in the South. The global North includes the Group of 8 and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Our own analysis of gender and politics journals shows scholars in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East are missing from leading journals …

Successful scholarly communications outreach centers on a consistent, flexible, and holistic approach. We provide training and support throughout the lifecycle of scholarly communications. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.

The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.

The OER discovery process is distributed across several repositories and search engines. It can be difficult to find time and motivation to effectively address collection management for materials in specialized areas that fall outside the primary scope of one’s usual responsibilities. The pressure of crowded shelves in the authors’ largest library and the associated difficulties of helping users locate materials led a team of faculty librarians and staff to evaluate and consolidate an “orphaned collection” of books in health and medicine call numbers. The authors describe how a project team established a data-informed evaluation and weeding process that minimized affective decision-making and considered the nuances of collection management between disciplines.

This report, prepared by the staff of the Global Legal Research Directorate of the Law Library of Congress, surveys laws regulating the mandatory legal deposit of electronic materials. Fifteen countries representing different approaches to collecting, describing, preserving, and storing digital and non-print documents and providing access to them are included in the study. Altmetrics derived from Twitter have potential benefits for institutional repository (IR) stakeholders (faculty, students, administrators, and academic libraries) when metrics aggregators (Altmetric, Plum Analytics) are integrated with IRs. There is limited research on tweets mentioning works in IRs and how the results impact IR stakeholders, specifically libraries. In order to address this gap in the literature, the author conducted a content analysis of tweets tracked by a metrics aggregator (Plum X Metrics) in a Digital Commons IR. The study found that the majority of tweets were neutral in attitude, intended for a general audience, included no hashtags, and were written …

Keeping Up With Science Faculty Scholarship: A No-Cost Option For Generating Faculty Citation Lists, Ngoc-Yen Tran, Emily Chan

To support SJSU’s College of Science's efforts to identify and quantify science faculty research publications for fund disbursement, we compiled a bibliography of science faculty research and scholarship. The citation lists would be used to develop and formalize baseline research metrics. We used existing and available resources including librarian time, subscribed science databases, and the institution-subscribed reference citation manager.
