Scholarly communication expertise and responsibility is often located in only a few members of an academic community. Librarians increasingly need to be knowledgeable and articulate about scholarly communication issues, including research data management. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. One of the common misconceptions around open access journals is that they lack quality and impact. For a library publishing program, it is important for the program’s journals to contradict this misconception in order to retain institutional support and gain quality submissions, peer reviewers, and substantive editorial boards. A workshop to educate and provide improvement support for journal editors was born out of a conversation between two librarians responsible for library publishing efforts at their respective institutions. Important trends in scholarly communication, such as transitioning from subscription journals to open access journals, increasing amounts of “born digital” data and creative works, the growing importance of protecting one’s intellectual property rights, and keeping digital scholarship organized, managed, and preserved, are all areas where academic scholars and researchers require support services and assistance. Librarians are natural partners to provide these services.

Many academic libraries have found opportunities to showcase unique content through conference-hosting services, such as website-hosting and conference proceeding publishing. This poster describes two libraries’ successful efforts to archive conference materials from an undergraduate research conference and a professional conference for scholars.

Through the lens of these two case studies, the repository coordinators will discuss engaging with presenters on topics of author rights, ethical use of others’ work in their presentations, creating a sustainable infrastructure for continued growth of the conference, and collaborating with faculty.

Streaming The Archives: Repurposing Systems To Jumpstart A Media Digitization Program, Talea Anderson

Presenting lessons learned by the archives at Central Washington University during the first year of its new media digitization program. This poster, presented in 2015 at ACRL's national conference, demonstrates how the archives jumpstarted its program by using available systems--an institutional repository and cloud-based streaming service--to disseminate digitized media. The poster presents advantages and disadvantages uncovered while using these repurposed systems, including consequences for metadata, workflow, interoperability, and discoverability.

This study investigates the use of ICT for distance learning by students of the National Open University of Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study and the main instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Copies of the questionnaire were administered on students of the National Open University of Nigeria, main campus, Lagos. Findings from the data analysis revealed that the level of ICT use among the respondents was high and; easy accessibility to most of the ICT facilities needed for distance learning is identified as the major factor responsible for the high level of usage of ICT …

As a primer on data information literacy (DIL), this column will cover the background of the field and why it is relevant to college and university libraries serving undergraduate populations. This article includes how data information literacy relates to information literacy, competencies associated with DIL, the relevance of DIL to undergraduates, DIL in library instruction, and the reasons for library engagement with DIL. Examining DIL within the larger framework of information literacy can help outreach and instruction librarians engage with a format that may be unfamiliar to them but whose underlying foundation is well-established.

Beyond Beall’S List: Better Understanding Predatory Publishers, Monica Berger, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

This article discusses the phenomenon of predatory publishing and examines the benefits and limitations of Jeffrey Beall's blacklist of "potential, possible, or probable" predatory open access (OA) publishers. It also describes the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), a whitelist of scholarly OA journals, and other tools for evaluating open access journals. It concludes by discussing the role of librarians, who must help researchers avoid low-quality journals and also need to counteract the misconceptions and alarmism that stymie the acceptance of OA.

The peaceful application of atomic energy was introduced into Ghana about fifty years ago. This is the first bibliometric study of nuclear science and technology research publications listed in the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) Database, originating from Ghana. The purpose was to use the simple document counting method to determine the geographical distribution, annual growth and the subject areas of the publications as well as communication channels, key journals and authorship trends. The main findings of the study were that, a greater number of the nuclear science and technology records were published in Ghana (598 or 56.57% against 459 …
