Economic inequity is a pervasive aspect of the population of California State University (CSU) students. There are significant differences in the ability of our students to afford the total cost of their CSU education. Not only are they afforded less access to educational materials, but they also may be disadvantaged in knowing how to take advantage of those resources.

Providing free, open, and/or low-cost options for course materials is a CSU Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) strategy to significantly reduce the impact of economic inequities. Thus, we situate open as enabling equitable academic opportunities and successful educational outcomes for all CSU …

Abstract

The study is a survey of librarians’ perception towards collaborative research in South Eastern Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study, the study adopted descriptive survey method. The population of the study consists of 242 librarians in federal and state university in South East Nigeria. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire, the data collected was analysed using percentages and bar chart. This case study explores issues of interoperability and shared collection management between two libraries – one community and one academic – located within the American Jewish University (AJU). AJU’s choice to use two separate classification systems, Library of Congress and Elazar, respectively, provides a necessary separation of academic and religious context, but limits record access between the two collections. A citation analysis study was carried out on the citations appended in the end of History discipline Ph.D. dissertations to ascertain what types of documents are the most frequently used in the research process, the most commonly consulted core journals and obsolescence rate of the journals and books. The study analysed 8488 citations appended in the 36 Ph.D. theses of History discipline submitted to Panjab University, Chandigarh, for the award of doctoral degree during 2002-2012. The results obtained from the 8488 citations revealed that the most frequently used documents were books, which accounted for 54.16 percent of the total citations …

Faced with shrinking budgets and increased subscription prices, many academic libraries are seeking ways to reduce the cost of e-journal access. A common target for cuts is the “Big Deal,” or large bundled subscription model, a term coined by Kenneth Frazier in a 2001 paper criticizing the effects of the Big Deal on the academic community. A Visualization Model Used For Determining The Effectiveness Of Information Retrieval In A Scientific Database, Nestor L. Osorio, Samantha Johnson

In this study, we demonstrate that a visualization model can determine the effectiveness of searching a bibliographic database, when three descriptive metadata fields are compared. The Inspec database was searched to create a bibliography of articles about a broad scientific topic, interplanetary travel. We collected metadata from 823 Inspec articles and used the Sci2 Tool to create co-occurrence networks based on subject terms, title keywords, and classification codes from each of the articles. The Watts-Strogatz clustering coefficient model was used to create molecular organization of the networks. This method identified subject domain clusters for each of the three selected metadata …

Open access (OA) is a form of publication that allows some level of free access to scholarly publications. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a repository to which OA journals may apply and upload content to increase discoverability. OA also refers to metadata that is freely available for harvesting. In making metadata open access, standards for schemes and protocols are needed to facilitate interoperability. This study highlights the publication analysis in nanotechnology research outputs in global level as identified the data in Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, Thomson Reuters, Philadelphia, USA. It is found that a total output of worldwide scholarly communications in the field of nanotechnology is 20825 during the period between 1989 and 2014. The maximum numbers of outputs of 7269 records (34.91 %) were published by USA which is placed in the first rank.
