First-year students completing Musselman Library’s portion of the fall 2018 Charting Your Course (CYC) orientation received one of these passports before beginning the activity. After visiting each of the Library departments and learning about work staff members do there, students received a passport stamp in order to track their progress.

This community resource was created as a component of my capstone project for the 2017-2018 pilot of the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program. Textbook costs have skyrocketed, leaving many students unable to afford the latest edition. Open Educational Resources (OER) are available at no cost, so all students can have the materials they need. In addition, OER allow faculty to transform traditional assignments into student-driven digital projects. This poster aims to apprise students of the benefits of Open Education and Open Educational Resources. One section of the poster highlights some of the ways OER are being used at Gettysburg College.

“I had a class where we read classical text of [political] philosophy. But only sections of each text. But we had to buy the books. No one ever tried to bring in open source online copies of them and the professor did not provide them. Instead we spent a lot of money on like twentyish books and only used parts of them.”

Open-access AI educational resources are vital to the quality of the AI education we offer. Avoiding the reinvention of wheels is especially important to us because of the special challenges of AI Education. AI could be said to be “the really interesting miscellaneous pile of Computer Science”. While “artificial” is well-understood to encompass engineered artifacts, “intelligence” could be said to encompass any sufficiently difficult problem as would require an intelligent approach and yet does not fall neatly into established Computer Science subdisciplines. Editing and publishing a student research journal is a high-impact educational practice that libraries are uniquely suited to support. Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library hosts three student-edited journals in our open access institutional repository. We train student editors to use the online journal publishing platform to receive, assign, and review submissions. We also expose them to the scope of undergraduate publishing beyond our institution, describe the benefits of open access publishing to authors (including sharing their own use metrics), invite professors who edit professional journals to share their expertise with the students, and facilitate a discussion about how their editing process …
