2019 Gettysburg College Student Textbook And Course Materials Survey Executive Summary, Janelle Wertzberger, Sarah Appedu, Mary R. Elmquist

We’ve all heard stories of students struggling with textbook costs, but how do our students cope when the price gets too high? Modeled after the Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey conducted by Florida Virtual Campus, Musselman Library’s course materials survey sought to uncover how textbook costs impact the success of Gettysburg College students. Results give insight into participants’ perceptions of how much money they spend, the strategies they use to reduce costs, and the effects of the cost of course materials on their academic success.

The Executive Summary details our research questions, key findings, and main takeaways.

Open textbooks are full, real textbooks, used by many faculty across the country, and licensed to be freely used, edited, reproduced, and distributed. Adopting an open textbook ensures that all students have immediate access to a zero-cost book and provides faculty 100% control over their learning materials. Attend this workshop to learn more about why open textbook adoption is on the rise, and hear from Gettysburg professors who made the switch after last year’s workshop.

Undergraduate outreach about Open Access (OA) lies at the intersection of information literacy and Scholarly Communications. Reframing undergraduates as current and future scholars allows us to treat them as agents within the Scholarly Communications network. Students who have mastered fundamental research skills are prepared to view them through the critical lens of Scholarly Communications in order to learn both how to locate resources and how those resources are created. One of the things that we celebrate here tonight at this reception is the strong relationship between faculty and students. The mentoring of student research and creative activity is so important here at Gettysburg—and it’s especially gratifying for faculty and students alike when that collaboration results in co-authored publications. But whether or not publication is an outcome, the opportunity for students to work closely with faculty is something that we offer in a way that not many colleges and universities do. Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

During Open Education Week 2019, Musselman Library's Department of Scholarly Communications educated the campus community about issues of textbook affordability and about the development of Open Educational Resources. This poster provides basic information about what Open Education is and how it is a response to the high cost of course materials, which creates barriers for many students who cannot afford to purchase their books. Open Education seeks to create equitable access to all course materials and transform traditional ideas about pedagogy.

This display will challenge students to think about the process that publications go through in order to arrive in their hands in time for class. The display features three scenarios and questions about the publication process with a flip-up feature to reveal the answer. Students are invited to write down their best guesses, and those who stop by during the table hours will be eligible for an Open Access cupcake and the chance to enter a raffle for a $25 Bookstore gift certificate!
