The main contributors of scientific knowledge—researchers—generally aim to disseminate their findings far and wide. And yet, publishing companies have largely kept these findings behind a paywall. With digital publication technology markedly reducing cost, this enduring wall seems disproportionate and unjustified; moreover, it has sparked a topical exchange concerning how to modernize academic publishing. This discussion, however, seems to focus on how to compensate major publishers for providing open access through a pay-to-publish model, in turn transferring financial burdens from libraries to authors and their funders. Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study is to determine the awareness and extent use of Web 2.0 technology in the academic libraries of Islamabad, Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey research methods was employed in this exploratory study through google forms on Awareness of Web 2.0 tools, the questionnaire were distributed among 100 library professionals of 43 Public and private sector universities based on Islamabad were selected for this study,72 questionnaires were received, showing a response rate of 72% per cent , the data were scrutinized and tabulated using MS Excel 2010 and SPSS.

This unit provides a primer on aspects of United States copyright law that relate to library publishing and provides guidance on creating two essential copyright policies: 1. An externally facing copyright policy for authors considering publishing with the library publishing unit; and 2. A copyright review policy for internal purposes (i.e. how to review submitted publications for copyright issues). Nothing in this unit substitutes for legal advice or constitutes legal advice. It is important to work closely with University Counsel when working to comply with University copyright policies, legal requirements, and the needs of the publishing group.

The Global South refers to African, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries who are also members of the Group of 77. The intergovernmental organisation of mainly developing countries is used to identify countries in the South. The global North includes the Group of 8 and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.

The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.
