Using Citation Analysis To Develop A Strategic Plan For A Campus-Wide Scholarly Communication Initiative, Scott Lancaster
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
As scholarly communication continues its digitally driven shift away from a publishing model rooted in print culture, it is essential that the academic library maintain its impact by keeping in step with rapidly changing expectations and practices. As future faculty, today’s graduate students must learn the skills to carefully evaluate publishers, consider copyright in a digital environment, use information ethically and responsibly, and avoid unscrupulous vendors and publishers who prey on those who must “publish or perish.” While they develop knowledge in their respective fields, they cannot afford to be unaware of both the opportunities and pitfalls of modern scholarly …
Indispensable: A Library’S One Stone Strategy To Improve Graduate Student Research Skills, Meet Faculty Research Demands And Contribute To Graduate Student Retention, Michelle Lang
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
At Pace University and other master and doctoral universities and colleges, Graduate Students are not usually among the systematically targeted. In the fall of 2016, I undertook to specifically target Graduate Assistants (GA’s) working for faculty in research assistantships. Securing an academic assistantship is a coveted and competitive endeavor, but if the GA does not have the required research skills they can be out after only one semester. While being aware of university retention goals and the gap between GA research skills and faculty research demands, I started a pilot project of creating GA research workshops based on the specific …

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Most graduate students are required to produce theses and dissertations that make an original contribution to the field of study. This requirement informs how students and faculty approach graduate research, but colleges and universities often treat the culminating works merely as student records, not scholarly contributions encompassing original research. Librarians, however, are uniquely situated to treat graduate students as emerging participants in the scholarly communication ecosystem and to help them prepare their culminating works for an outside audience. Librarians have the expertise to advise students during the submission process with questions regarding copyright, licensing, fair use, and author’s rights, as …

The Research Savvy Librarians: Boot Camp For Teaching Literature Reviews To Graduate Students, Kyung Kim, Abby Scheel, Kelly Grove
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Writing literature reviews is among the most common assignments for graduate work, and a requirement for all theses and dissertations. Students find this often a complex and even overwhelming process as the graduate students need to identify and get eligible literature on the topic, read and evaluate literature, and take notes about trends, patterns, and the latest development of the scholarship on the topic. Writing literature reviews involves a number of skill sets from the students, but practical guidance on each step in the process is often not provided by professors. Librarians have helped the students to search databases and …

The Spring 2018 Lesley University Library Newsletter is an overview of developments that have taken place in the library since the Fall 2017 semester. It reports on success stories, gives insight into personal accounts of library resources, and new developments to enhance the quality of services.
The newsletter begins with an overview by Dean Hedi BenAicha and is followed with contributions from many of the staff members of the library. This includes Sam Quiñon's article, "Attention Faculty: what Lesley Librarians Actually Do," which indicates how the library field has changed and how important it is for librarians to engage in …

Library Publishing Curriculum
Long the primary role of university presses, faculty’s long-form scholarship is now being created and disseminated with the help of many types of publishers. Whether it’s an edited volume, a symposium collection, conference proceedings, or a single-authoredwork, most successful long-form scholarly texts are organized around an expected set of elements. Understanding the need for and purpose of each of these elements ensures that the publisher can help an author create an effective work and the reader can navigate the materials successfully. Additional common goals for long-form programs include working with an author to write a well-structured publication containing a coherent …

Sometimes a text-based format will not serve an author’s need –time for a more unique presentation! When does material and research require a multi-modal product? How do you help the author create the final product, be it a database, a video, an interactive work, a website, or an online course? What kinds of files can you accept, publish, and preserve? What material requires any kind of review, and how is that review validated? Who will maintain the site and who gets credit for the creation? Do you have access to a digital humanities center or humanities librarian, and if so …

Many universities have formal programs addressing textbook affordability. These may include committees charged with investigating the current landscape and communicating with faculty to encourage affordable options; open textbook programs supported by the library, institution, or state; or a university-press program supporting faculty in the creation of affordable course readers. How do you identify opportunities to best offset student costs with quality affordable textbooks? Do you create resources devotedto a course at your institution, or should you aim for broader course adoption? What additional non-text components may be expected by users? How do you get faculty on board with creating and …

As a library publisher, will you act as a service provider for your home institution, an editorially driven publisher of scholarly content, or both? After you’ve decided on the approach you want to take, it’s time to select an approach to publishing and craft your vision, mission, and goals. Building and growing a publishing program requires active engagement with the university and scholarly communities. A needs assessment will help you identify areas where your program can focus. Should you target specific areas, perhaps aligned with the strengths or strategic interests of your institution? As word of your program gets out …

Of Maps And Courtrooms: Evaluating Information Sources, Terry Robertson
Seminary Scholarship Symposium
How are novice researchers to evaluate library resources in a topic for which they have limited prior knowledge? Kuhlthau has described two phases in a typical student research process: exploring and documenting. This poster suggests two familiar metaphors that provide clues to evaluating library-mediated sources. During the exploration phase, the metaphor of the map is discussed. What makes for a good map? Many of these same characteristics should be present in the sources that are accessed. Typical characteristics of maps demonstrating the values of soundness and reliability that can be applied to library-mediated resources include: (a) currency, (b) credentialed authors …
