This slide presentation gives a very brief overview of the development of the Web from its inception as ARPANET to the Semantic Web. The presentation then discusses Linked Data and its uses on the Web. It also gives a scenario of how linked data would work in libraries and its potential to expand access to library resources by making them discoverable through Web search engines such as Google. The presentation focuses on the metadata transition necessary to accomplish this type of global access.

Streaming The Archives: Repurposing Systems To Jumpstart A Media Digitization Program, Talea Anderson

Presenting lessons learned by the archives at Central Washington University during the first year of its new media digitization program. This poster, presented in 2015 at ACRL's national conference, demonstrates how the archives jumpstarted its program by using available systems--an institutional repository and cloud-based streaming service--to disseminate digitized media. The poster presents advantages and disadvantages uncovered while using these repurposed systems, including consequences for metadata, workflow, interoperability, and discoverability.

Live for a little over two years, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s repository, LVHN Scholarly Works, has enhanced the Network’s reputation and research credibility by increasing the visibility of its scholarship. In addition to enhancing the Network’s reputation, LVHN Scholarly Works has been instrumental in saving time and easing workflows for several of its residency programs as well as for ACGME accreditation, and has even contributed to filling in missing pieces of institutional history. As the initiative moves forward, the library continues to look for ways to further increase the visibility of LVHN’s scholarship and help to solve other challenges.

This book chapter examines two futures for academic librarians working in access (technical) services: deeper collaboration on data management with faculty and student researchers and expanded access to library resources on the Semantic Web. Both are concerned with data organization, discovery, access, and support of shared data beyond the library. The chapter examines many aspects of research data from the perspectives of researchers and librarians. In this study, a Knowledge Map (KM) was created based on the Research Lifecycle at the University of Central Florida to provide campus-wide services and resources to researchers. The KM aims to meet the needs of researchers and delivers guided searching and assistance in all aspects of research, including literature review, citation management, research data management, grant management, research work publication and dissemination. NISO is the National Information Standards Organization, a non-profit industry organization whose mission statement reads: “NISO fosters the development and maintenance of standards that facilitate the creation, persistent management, and effective interchange of information so that it can be trusted for use in research and learning.” Their recently-issued proposed guidelines for new metadata fields to be attached to scholarly works purport to address and clarify issues of access and re-licensing surrounding the electronic distribution of journal articles. The University of New Hampshire Library and its partner, the UNH Earth Systems Research Center, have been awarded a grant in the amount of $474,156 from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, National Leadership Grants for Libraries Program, to build PLACE, the Position-based Location Archive Coordinate Explorer. Among project objectives is to provide a toolkit for other institutions to implement in their geospatial digital collections. The project will contribute to two open source communities: Open Geoportal (OGP) and Fedora Commons.
