Mapping Information Literacy Outcomes And Other Intellectual Skills Into Students' Educational Experiences, Patricia A. Iannuzzi, L Dee Fink

Library Faculty Presentations

The 2007 report, College Learning for the New Global Century, outlines a cluster of intellectual and practical skills that are critical components of a liberal education: inquiry and analysis; critical and creative thinking; written and oral communication; quantitative literacy; information literacy; and teamwork and problem solving. The learning outcomes associated with information literacy relate to and incorporate many of the learning outcomes in all of these skill clusters. Participants in this session will address how these information literacy and related learning outcomes can be mapped into student learning experiences at three levels: in an individual course, in an academic sequence …

Being Like Both: Library Instruction Methods That Outshine The One-Shot, Teresa M. Bean, Sabrina N. Thomas

Librarian Research

Marshall University librarians' efforts to improve library instruction are explored. A history of the libraries' Digital Learning Team (DLT) and its developmental phases is provided, as well as interpretations of evaluative data collected from embedded students. Data from the iSkills assessment of student information literacy skills are considered. The results suggest that library instruction best facilitates student learning when it aligns with specific research goals, utilizes a variety of learning styles, and allows time for practice and assessment. Student feedback suggests the need for additional instruction on citation and emphasis on increasing students' confidence in their research skills.

Improving Financial Information Literacy In Introduction To Financial Accounting, Anne Kelly, Teresa Williams, Brad S. Matthies, J. Burdeane Orris

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The motivation for this study came from a desire to improve teaching of the use of accounting information for decision making. The information literacy standards and related performance indicators guided the development of a semester-long case study by accounting faculty and academic business librarians. Their collaboration yielded a series of instruction modules and related student exercises leading up to a group activity involving the evaluation of a company as a potential investment for retirement savings. Students enrolled in two sections of an introductory accounting course volunteered to participate in this study. They provided information about their knowledge before and after …

Introductory Research For Inner-City Advanced Placement High School Students, Keith Muchowski

Publications and Research

Instruction module:

Circumstances of the Instruction: This module is based on a collaborative effort between a college librarian working with two 11 111 grade Advanced Placement (AP) History and English teachers. Students are enrolled in both the English and History classes, making collaboration and curriculum coordination easier. An instructional librarian working in concert with classroom faculty is beneficial to students because many teachers are not fully aware of recent trends such as information storage and retrieval systems and Web-based search tools. Students taking this module are intelligent, score well on standardized aptitude tests, and receive better than average grades. Still, …

We argue that all knowledge begins with the body, the physical space it occupies and the territory an individual defines as “home.” The taken-for-granted nature of this reality is disrupted by the experience of moving into a new cultural space, whether this space is defined physically or in discursive terms. Cultural space is an extension of personal identity, both the physical circumstances through which individual consciousness is shaped, and the conceptual connections through which individuals construct a vantage point in the world. The students whose writing we examine were from an ESL class in first-year composition and an upper-division class, …

The library is an invaluable resource for students who are exploring potential career paths or currently seeking employment. Unlike individual academic departments, the library is an institution-wide resource with the ability to reach students from all subject areas and education levels. Librarians are uniquely positioned to collaborate across the grain of university, college, and high school communities by offering resources to support the career search of all students, …

Creating A Library Research Prize To Reward And Encourage Information Literacy, Ray Bailey, Helen Beaven

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Student research papers and other similar projects have traditionally been the “bread and butter” of academic libraries. Even in this digital age, the campus library remains the best place to find appropriate resources for these projects, as well as for getting necessary assistance with the scholarly research process. It is an ongoing challenge for academic libraries to make this fact known to the campus community, and to find novel ways to entice students to utilize the library and all it has to offer, rather than depending on less reliable sources. To encourage our students to perform academic research and writing …
