Social Media Engagement Across Public Libraries In Monroe County: A Webometric Study, Danielle D’Agostino

SLIS Connecting

Social media has continued to develop and change rapidly since its inception. In order to best meet the information needs of users and gather as much visibility as possible, new platforms have been created and older platforms have been updated to improve usage. Because of these changes, engagement with newer, yet highly popular social media platforms such as TikTok has not been studied as widely as more traditional platforms such as Facebook. Additionally, post formats, character limits, and post content can vary greatly by platform. Comparing multiple social media platforms in this study allowed for a wider view of how …

The creation of Storyville was meant to bring regulation to the sex trade and organized crime. The creation of the sixteen blocks of the district was influenced by a diverse range of experiences, ranging from cheap "cribs," vibrant music halls, saloons, and lavish mansions filled with "top dollar" ladies. …

Text Complexity In Selected Newbery Medal Winners, Stephanie N. Harrelson Jun 2023

Text Complexity In Selected Newbery Medal Winners, Stephanie N. Harrelson

SLIS Connecting

Children who read for pleasure, as well as for information, do so because they have first learned the simple mechanics of reading. Once the mechanics are in place, children seek out stories that are of interest to them. Reading engaging materials holds the interest of children. As readers encounter increasingly complex reading material, their comprehension and reading abilities increase. It is important that children's literature is not only entertaining, but also complex in age-appropriate ways (Juel, 1988).

This study looks at the text complexity of Newbery Medal winners. The books selected for this study cover a 100-year period (1922-2022). The …

By documenting these types of metrics, this study aimed to exhibit how these community-led archives collect materials, and what it …

There was high compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines; however, there was no specialized COVID-19 information service desk for patrons' inquiries. Libraries participated in the dissemination of COVID-19 information during the pandemic, especially to …

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This presentation, delivered at the LOEX 2023 conference, highlights the program impetus, design, and initial assessment, as well as a call to rediscover how in-person tours can be an essential part of an academic library instruction program. Academic library tours used to be a staple offering that acquainted users to spaces and services. Responsible Practices For Responsible Libraries: The Role Of Libraries In A World Of Generative Ai, Samantha Seah

This presentation focuses on generative AI images and potential information literacy and ethical issues relating to the use and creation of AI images. Generative AI technology has made the creation and modification of images easier and more accessible to a layperson. However images are often overlooked in information literacy programmes despite growing evidence that people consume most information through visual and video formats thanks to the rise of social media platforms like TikTok. This presentation will consider ACRL’s framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, whereby in looking at information creation as a process, we need to not only look …

Predicting The Pebcak: A Quantitative Analysis Of How Cybersecurity Education, Literacy, And Awareness Affect Individual Preparedness., Annie Goodman

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This essay explores the relationship between individuals' cybersecurity education, literacy, awareness, and preparedness. While cybersecurity is often associated with complex hacking scenarios, the majority of data breaches and cyber-attacks result from individuals inadvertently falling prey to phishing emails and malware. The lack of standardized education and training in cybersecurity, coupled with the rapid expansion of technology diversity, raises concerns about individuals' cybersecurity preparedness. As individuals are the first line of defense and the weakest link in cybersecurity, understanding the influence of education, literacy, and awareness on their adherence to best practices is crucial. This work aims to survey a diverse …

Digital scholarship (the use of digital technology in research or teaching applications) is a new and growing field but many Mississippi libraries, including the University of Mississippi, are not officially supporting digital scholarship. To change this, librarians at the University of Mississippi sent out an online survey to faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students in order to gauge their interest in and experience with digital scholarship methods and tools and how the library can best support digital scholarship on campus. The results showed a wide variety of interest and expertise across several fields, mostly in the humanities, with important data …
