Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
On May 11, 2018, Mount Merapi in Indonesia erupted suddenly and then followed by three eruptions on May 21, 2018. The Department of Research and Development on Technology for Geological Disaster (BPPTKG), a governmental body for disaster and geological research, calls it as a phreatic or minor eruption. BPPTKG the announced the warning status of Mount Merapi as “Caution” . Even though the eruption was not dangerous, yet it still scared the people. BPPTKG then created Media Center to provide information for the people regarding the phreatic eruption in 2018. The methodology used was study case with BPPTKG’s Media Center …

Graduate Occupational Therapy Students: Communication And Research Preferences From Three University Libraries, Lisa A. Adriani, Daniel G. Kipnis, Ronda I. Kolbin, Daniel Verbit
Libraries Scholarship
Library liaisons from three universities distributed an anonymous survey to graduate occupational therapy students to gauge preferred methods of communication when conducting research. This article discusses three findings: whom the students prefer to turn to when seeking research assistance, which methods of communication students prefer, and how long students spend searching before asking for assistance. From 193 responses, the liaisons reasoned that students prefer consulting with their peers before seeking help from librarians or faculty or instructors and they prefer assistance face-to-face. Additionally, the majority are willing to research from 30 minutes to 1 hour before seeking research help.

Most of us know Nevada beyond the Strip. It’s a place of houses, of shopping plazas, of movie theaters, and grocery stores. A place of hotels that are also places of work. A place of basins, ranges, vistas, and nature. A place of personal history. For Intimate Nevada: Artists Respond, curators Lauren Paljusaj (ENG BA ‘20) and Anne Savage (CFA BA ‘22), draw on photographs found in UNLV Special Collections to uncover the intimate visuality of a Nevada of past centuries. The exhibition focuses on how the imaged built landscape of early 20th century Southern Nevada …

Refreshing Your Sierra System, Leigh Ann Duncan
University Libraries' Staff Publications
Although our Sierra system runs well day to day, looking closely at usage trends helped us determine what areas needed extra attention and where we could improve customer service (new circulation notices!). For our mature system, examining the major tables that run Sierra's circulation system—branches, item types, patron types, notice texts—was particularly important as our Library use has changed over the years. This program will share strategies for examining and streamlining system tables, and implementing circulation notices using print templates.

Changing The Habitat At Academic Conferences: Using A Learning Ecosystem With Active Learning During A Panel Presentation, Gail Morton, Lee Olson, Stephanie Miranda, Adam Griggs, Kristen Bailey, Christian Pham, Kathryn Wright
Georgia Library Quarterly
Abstract
In order to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of an active learning event during a panel presentation at an academic conference, Mercer University librarians presenting at the Georgia Libraries Conference switched the traditional way panel presentations are modeled. Instead of the question and answer session following a brief overview of the presentation, we moved our physical position in the room, closer to the participants in order to have a more intimate conversation with attendees. Using two active learning techniques, discussion and brainstorming, the presenters started a conversation with attendees about project ideas involving teaching faculty members, librarians, and students …

Bingo! Engaging History Of Science Students With Primary Sources, Leigh Rupinski
Scholarly Papers and Articles
This case study examines the process of creating an interactive and engaging lesson plan for the History of Science course, HSC 201: The Scientific Revolution. History of Science students tend to be undergraduates majoring in science or medical related fields, rather than the humanities, who need to fulfill an intensive writing or general education requirement. For most, if not all of them, this session would be the first time they experienced hands-on interaction with historical resources. Accordingly, the archivist sought to create a less traditional lesson plan that would foster a sense of fun and interest in the materials.
Out Of The Archives And Into The Streets: Teaching With Primary Sources To Cultivate Civic Engagement, Jen Hoyer
Publications and Research
This article examines whether teaching with primary sources can cultivate civic engagement by investigating the competencies involved in developing student civic engagement and aligning these with outcomes from teaching with primary sources. Using three examples from Brooklyn Connections, a primary source-based education outreach program that offers a free standards-based and curriculum-aligned school partnership program for grades four through twelve, this case study illustrates the potential for using primary sources to cultivate skills, knowledge, and student agency. Through assessment of these examples in teaching with primary sources using protocols developed for evaluation of programs that focus on developing civic engagement, the …

You Are Not Alone: Facilitating A Holistic Graduate Academic Experience Through A Dissertation Writing Workshop, Stan Trembach, Wendy Highby, Letha Mellman, Jane Monson, Maggie Shawcross
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
For graduate students, writing a dissertation can be an isolating experience. In 2018, librarians at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) Libraries collaborated with the Graduate School to organize and host the campus’ first Dissertation Prep and Writing Intensive workshop. Inspired by the examples of Simon Fraser University and Concordia University libraries, we aspired to offer a dissertation workshop that would provide writing support to UNC doctoral students at a crucial stage of their academic journey. Initially, the workshop to students who had completed oral examinations and submitted committee proposals. However, this stringent stage-related requirement was subsequently eased. Over the …

Engaging First Year Students With Intellectual Property, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Since intellectual property is so important to engineers, creating enthusiasm from the beginning of their engineering studies is imperative. Since first year students have not learned how to apply technological concepts to real life, demonstrating intellectual property could be a challenge. To engage first year engineering students in the concept and the value of intellectual property, students were introduced to basic concepts and applications. Different concepts were applied to real life examples allowing them to interface with technology from an intellectual property perspective. This paper highlights not only patents, but also trademarks and trade secrets.

Each participant should bring a lesson plan, teaching artifact, or other instructional challenge about which they would like to receive feedback. Small groups will be facilitated by …
Databases Are Like Box Stores: Teaching Information Literacy With Analogy, Kory A. Paulus
Databases Are Like Box Stores: Teaching Information Literacy With Analogy, Kory A. Paulus
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Teaching information literacy (IL) often requires instructors to explain and explore abstract concepts. This feat is never easy, as novice students often need a bridge between concrete and abstract thinking. Current research on the topic suggests one effective way to teach new, abstract concepts to students of any age is by using an analogy. However, it’s difficult to come up with effective analogies on the fly. In fact, Rick Wormeli has stated in Metaphors & Analogies: Power Tools for Teaching Any Subject that “what may need to change in many of our classrooms is the purposeful pursuit of metaphors and …

“It [My Research] Would Take Place At 11:50pm”: Constructing A Realistic Simulation To Study Online Information Evaluation For School Projects, Amy G. Buhler, Brittany Brannon
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
When students explore a search results page for a school-related project, what leads them to select a resource? We explore this question in our IMLS-funded research study, Researching Student Information Choices: Identifying and Judging the Credibility of Online Sources. In this session we introduce our novel simulation-based research method. We designed a simulated environment to study students’ online information-seeking behavior and understand their point-of-selection behavior when they determine that a resource potentially meets their research need. Simulated search engine results pages were used to examine students’ information selection decisions for an age-appropriate research prompt. The simulation collected quantitative data …

From Information Literacy To A Spirit Of Inquiry: A Tale Of Two Librarians, Maura Mandyck
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
With just two teaching librarians at our small liberal arts college on the Gulf Coast, we needed to create a coherent, reproducible, adaptable, and student-centered information literacy curriculum that would best serve the freshman English courses we work with most closely. Over the course of the last four years, we have blended the long experience and deep institutional knowledge of one of our librarians with the fresh-from-the-trenches (that is, high school librarianship and experience as an adjunct English instructor) perspective of the other to create the program of a Spirit of Inquiry, which we describe this way:
Active curiosity, diligent …
Innovative Education: Information Literacy Planning Reframed As Design Thinking, Kay Coates, Dylitchrous Thompson
Innovative Education: Information Literacy Planning Reframed As Design Thinking, Kay Coates, Dylitchrous Thompson
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Innovative education can be conceptualized as the “new” ways and methods of delivering educational content mostly in the realm of civil discourse and academics. Information literacy plays a niche role in content delivery generally, but especially when the discussion centers on tertiary scholarship. Design thinking is one of the many innovative methods of teaching and learning that has taken traction in the field of education. Manifestly, however, librarians have practiced this since the profession became a lettered vocation. It is without adequately acknowledging that by providing information literacy, librarians continue to do their part skillfully and quietly for successful outcomes …

Using Best Practices Of Teaching And Learning To Make Your Meetings More Inclusive And Productive, Jessica Kohout-Tailor
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
As instructors of information literacy, our goal is to equip learners with the skills needed to critically evaluate, use, and create information effectively and ethically. Listening and speaking skills are vital, as the information proficient learner listens to information, asks questions, and synthesizes the information with which they interact.
As instructors, we model these skills and behaviors within and outside of classrooms and libraries. We teach learners how to read information, model metacognitive skills, and support learners with how to effectively articulate their findings and new knowledge. We recognize that our pedagogy extends beyond the traditional classroom, which can include …
