Critical Information Literacy And Collections: Developing Praxis For Public Libraries, Lesley Garrett

Public libraries play an active role in building equitable, democratic communities by promoting critical information literacy, most notably in their collections development. Critical Information Literacy builds on the standard information literacy definitions by adding an analysis of political, economic, social and corporate systems that “have power and influence over information production, dissemination, access, and consumption" (Gregory and Higgins, 2013). This project includes a zine created to introduce an adaptation of Paulo Freire's banking concept of education for libraries, as well as note the continued work needed to develop a praxis for critical public librarianship.

The following case study adapted a library instruction course to support students’ ability to construct a thesis statement. Given at an urban junior college, the goal of the credit-bearing course is for students to acquire effective research strategies for finding reliable information and to develop information literacy skills. For this study, pedagogy divided thesis writing development over the course of several weeks in which students reviewed sample theses and the work of their peers, providing feedback to fellow students and revising their own work based on feedback from both students and instructors. The study assesses levels of Information Access Skills (IAS) in social science researchers at select central universities in Delhi. Questionnaire was used to collect relevant data on skills like information browsing, use of information search tools, and information search strategy consisting of natural language search, keyword search and Boolean search. The descriptive and inferential statistical tools like ANOVA, Post-hoc test using LSD were used to analyze and interpret the collected data. On the competency scale, a big total of 46.2% of researchers were found incompetent in IAS. Suggests measures to enhance the IAS levels of information privileged researchers.

Advocating for the importance of information literacy within our institutions of higher education can be difficult when budget cuts, challenges with student enrollments and retention, and other competing priorities are at the forefront of our faculty, staff, and students’ minds. How do we get the attention of our stakeholders and how do we get their input? At the University of the Pacific, we adopted a participatory design approach, which actively seeks to involve all stakeholders, to inform them about the results of the SAILS Test and to gather feedback on their perceptions of information literacy.

Assessing An Assessment: A Case Study Of The Nsse ’Experiences With Information Literacy’ Module, Debbie Morrow

This case study explores anomalous results from an administration of the 'Experiences with Information Literacy' (IL) add-on Topical Module to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan) in 2016, and finds that wording of NSSE survey questions can significantly influence results in certain contexts. Overall, summary responses for participating students compared positively to the aggregate means for all participating Large Public institutions in the 2016 NSSE cohort, on both the core NSSE survey and the IL module. In their efforts to assist and enhance student learning, Queensborough’s faculty engages in developing and implementing various pedagogical innovations. One unique practice at Queensborough is Students Working in Interdisciplinary Groups (SWIG), a HIP that falls within the AAC&U designation of Collaborative Assignments and Projects, which incorporates collaboration with library faculty as an integral component to student learning. This chapter will explain the SWIG pedagogy and process, faculty collaboration with the QCC library, its replicable model, case studies, and assessment.

The purpose of this study was to implement information literacy (IL) into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) writing courses at an urban community college, investigate if students’ information literacy (IL) skills were improved through library one-shot instruction, and determine if there was an association between IL skills and students’ writing performance. Students in the experimental group attended the library instructional class and students in the control group had no library class. Throughout the semester librarians hear from faculty that there is no time for library instruction. This is especially true for science courses where lab work is required. The Biomedical Sciences program at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is a rigorous, hands-on laboratory-based curriculum with course work covering physics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics. Students are required to complete IDS4936 – Biomedical Degree Capstone which requires a “multidisciplinary approach of learning science by analyzing social, economic, ethical, scientific, and professional aspects of their chosen topic.” (FSCJ College Catalog 2019-19)

This poster will show how a large university developed an on-demand library readiness mini-course online that has recently become a requirement for all undergraduate orientation classes, both in-person and online. Approximately 75% of honors programs have thesis or capstone requirements (Savage & Cognard-Black, 2016). Seeing the need to provide structure, scaffolding and guidance for these undergraduates, librarians created a course, Introduction to the Honors Thesis, as a required course for 2^nd semester Juniors in the Honors Program. In the course the frames of “Searching as Strategic Exploration” and “Information Creation as a Process” are taught. Students then demonstrate these frames through writing reflection papers, “source annotation” papers, and writing a prospectus. The primary purpose of the present study is to explore the level of information literacy among the farmers with regards to agriculture at the Jind district of Haryana state in India. Survey method with accidental sampling is used, and data were collected from a total number of 52 farmers who lived in the two selected villages by using a self-structured questionnaire. The demographic profile shows male dominancy on agriculture, and the majority of the farmers found literate. This article reviews scholarship of incorporating institutional objectives in academic courses and proposes a method to embed mission-critical competencies in a library instruction course. Few academic institutions focus their mission or core competencies on digital communication. LaGuardia Community College delineates three competencies in its mission: inquiry and problem solving, global learning, and integrative learning. Students exhibit command of these competencies in written, oral, or digital communication. The College defines the digital communication ability as successful collaboration and interaction using online tools, such as discussion boards, either to stage written exchange, or to capture video or oral discussions. To increase student engagement, the Humboldt State University Library ventured into the realm of gamified programming, exploring several strategies with the goal of trans- forming library outreach and instruction. Our efforts range from simple outreach to highly structured information literacy instruction and workshops that use gamification to encourage students to engage with knowledge practices and dispositions outlined in the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
