This article explores the affective reactions of 13 community college students engaged in an open pedagogy textbook creation project. The instructor and first author, a human development and family services faculty member and department chair at a community college in Oregon, received feedback from her students that the project impacted them differently than past learning experiences. Student engagement with research and the diverse personal experiences of their classmates fostered both personal challenges and growth. This article groups these experiences into themes and explores different theoretical lenses, including scaffolding (constructivism), transformative learning, threshold concepts and safe spaces/brave spaces. We discuss the …
Using A Standards Crosswalk To Adapt Resources For Teaching With Primary Sources Across K–12 And Higher Education, Jen Hoyer
Publications and Research
This article explores the work of archivists and special collections librarians in teaching with primary sources (TPS) for K–12 and higher education audiences and argues that the resources created for this work have largely targeted either audience, but not both. Building on a trend in the TPS literature toward skills-based instruction efforts, this article introduces a crosswalk between skills-based standards typically used in higher education (the SAA/RBMS Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy) and K–12 education (Common Core State Standards). This crosswalk demonstrations how resources created with one audience in mind can be adapted for use with other audiences. Examples of …

The One Size Does Not Fit All Approach: Case Studies In Modeling Embedded Librarianship, Rachel L. Edford, Sandy Avila
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Paper presentation at the 2022 Distance Library Services Conference. Due to the pandemic and the shift to remote work, the need for distance library services has expanded, with librarians exploring different modes of engagement, including the embedded librarianship model. But have you ever tried to define embedded librarianship? Two academic librarians from different departments at the same large public institution of higher education debated that same question. The literature on embedded librarianship is both plentiful and diverse, with few authors agreeing on how to define the concept. While many articles discuss the importance of integration and collaboration to embedded librarianship, …

ETSU Faculty Works
In an effort to improve retention and promote library services to new incoming students, the Sherrod Library staff at East Tennessee State University discussed different ideas and decided to expand the Lending Technology Program & Personal Librarian (PL) program to include First Generation and Transfer students. To help decrease library anxiety, students received by email a weekly newsletter of events and workshops happening in the library. These emails also personally reached out and regularly informed the students of information literacy skills such as navigating the library website, subject guides, tutoring center, and citation help. Additionally, the students received a short …

An Interactive Tutorial: Evaluating Online Sources Through Lateral Reading, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis
Libraries Scholarship
Critical evaluation of online sources has become a necessary skill in everyday life. With the prevalence of fake news, pseudoscience, and deep fake videos, how can a person determine if a source is legitimate? While in some cases it’s fairly obvious when a source is suspect, at other times determining a source’s credibility isn’t so straightforward.
Recent research indicates that both university professors and college students have difficulty recognizing misleading online sources that at first glance look reputable. The close reading skills that are key to much of academic work differ from the online evaluation strategies needed when quickly determining …

Congratulations, it’s July, which means you have officially survived what may very well be considered the most consequential Supreme Court term in the history of the United States. Simply existing in this country over the past few weeks (months? years?) feels like trying to swim through rapidly drying concrete. Avoiding the news is impossible if for no other reason than the direct impact so much of the news of late has on the job of a law librarian. Imagine teaching a legal research class at the end of this past SCOTUS sitting? I’ll spare you the image because I did, …

Unpacking The Graduate Student Research Experience: Findings From A Drawing-Based Interview Study, Alissa Droog, Frances Brady, Kari D. Weaver
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
What do graduate students think research is? How do they come to be scholars and how can we as information professionals better support their needs?
Using a drawing exercise rooted in visual research methods (Hartel, 2017; Doucette & Hoffman, 2019; Bryans & Mavin, 2006), a cross-institutional research team in the United States and Canada explore these questions through an interview-based study of graduate student perceptions of research.
At present, the existing body of knowledge examining student perceptions of research strongly focuses on undergraduates (Griffioen, 2019; Insua et al., 2018), leaving a critical gap in theory and pedagogy needed to support …

Proactive Librarians, An Annoying Chat Widget, & A Global Pandemic: Analysis Of How An Existing Pop-Up Chat Widget Delivered Point Of Need Reference Services During A Global Pandemic At A Major Academic Institution, Christopher M. Jimenez
Works of the FIU Libraries
In 2019, the librarians at Florida International University in Miami, Fl. implemented a pop-up chat widget using Springshare’s LibChat software to help drive more traffic toward virtual reference services. This led to an instant increase in traffic through our chat platform. Affectionately called the Annoying Chat Widget, the ACW also had the unintended success of increasing the percentage of quality research queries, improving the use of librarian time and effort. This established service proved vital when transitioning to fully remote services in March 2020, when librarians were forced to provide all services via virtual modalities. At the Teaching the Teachers Conference a few weeks ago, I gave a demonstration of a formative assessment style we’ve been using at my institution for the past year and a half: a live assignment, AKA the Research Practicum. The presentation was virtual; COVID struck, of course, and I couldn’t get on a plane and fly to Portland. Fortunately, the nature of this assessment lends itself beautifully to a pivot to virtual because it is already entirely virtual. The Research Practicum uses Zoom or some other video conferencing platform and asks students to research while sharing their screen as their …

Wikipedia has become a widely accepted information source. Wikipedia is also by its very nature centered on community and on building and growing knowledge collectively. However, many are still understandably skeptical of how credible Wikipedia content is, and a gap remains between how frequently we use Wikipedia and how well we understand it. Wikipedia creates an opening for exploring how information is created and circulated, how the information creation process is often negotiated collectively, and how to critically evaluate online information. This session will explore how Wikipedia can be a rich tool for both teaching information literacy and building community …

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
This paper explores a unique approach to information literacy instruction by designing a curriculum map that provides consistent opportunities for faculty to engage with ideas surrounding critical thinking, metacognition, scaffolding instruction, and implementing information literacy teaching tools within their classroom. This map outlines a comprehensive approach to faculty development that addresses the dissatisfaction in information literacy instruction among academic librarians, particularly with the one-shot model and the lack of assessment opportunities of students’ information literacy skills. Using action research, the author explores the reason for this dissatisfaction and how it be addressed. Through interviews with other campus departments like online …

Small Actions, Grassroots Efforts, And Community Building: Inspiring Fresh Perspectives On Teaching Information Literacy In Uncertain Times, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis
Libraries Scholarship
In this workshop two academic librarians will share about their grassroots approach to fostering civic and digital literacies through their work in teaching “lateral reading” and online source evaluation. We will reflect on how a small action, creating an online research guide, was a seed for growing roots - connections and relationships - and for expanding our own teaching and our educational outreach. While we’ll touch on work with lateral reading, our primary focus will be reflecting with fellow librarians on small actions as regenerative responses to burnout and as starting points for more collective engagement in civic literacy education. …

Librarian And Faculty Conversations About Information Literacy: A Pilot Study On Communication Across Disciplinary Boundaries, Carolyn B. Gamtso
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The purpose of this pilot study is to discover how academic instruction librarians discuss the concept of information literacy with faculty colleagues outside the library and information science field; how they negotiate shared meanings of the term; and what pedagogical actions result from these conversations. The researcher interviewed a purposive, convenience sample of three early-career ILI librarians employed at private colleges in the Northeastern United States to ascertain their perspectives on the quality and nature of their conversations with faculty members about information literacy. The researcher used the theoretical framework of Etienne Wenger’s dimensions of boundary processes to interpret the …
