Lost In Translation: Creating A Common Language For Information Literacy Across Disciplines, Emily Frigo, Mary O'Kelly, Jodi Tyron

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The Libraries of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) crafted an Information Literacy Core Competencies document during fall 2008 for adoption by the larger GVSU community (http://main.gvsu.edu/library/information-literacy-core-competencies-168.htm). The philosophy of information literacy is embedded in all learning environments, but the term information literacy is most prevalent in the context of libraries. The competencies document was an attempt to clarify these concepts in a manner that speaks to the broader academic community. Every effort was made to use inclusive language and to make concepts applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines. Focus groups were chosen as the lead vehicle to roll …

Building A First-Year Information Literacy Experience: Integrating Best Practices In Education And Acrl Information Literacy Standards For Higher Education, Jacalyn Bryan, Elana Karshmer

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

SLU100 (Introduction to the University Experience) is a mandatory first-year course. It provides a framework of strategies to help students succeed in and out of the classroom. This course includes a library component that requires each class section to attend a library instruction session. Time and staff limitations, as well as a desire to include meaningful active learning experiences relating to Information Literacy, prompted a redesign of the instructional approach. The new instruction plan integrates the ACRL IL standards, McREL strategies, and active learning opportunities in order to create library instruction sessions that are based on practical as well as …

The Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center is privileged to be the sole library for four distinguished Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU): Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College and the Interdenominational Theological Center. This role can also be a challenge when trying to reach students and faculty in all the campuses since the physical building of the library is not centrally located. With the help of technology and a few campus contacts, Woodruff librarians are taking their reference services to where the researchers are – on campus. Faculty and or campus staff select a time …

Using Freely Available Software In Information Literacy Instruction, Leslie Madden

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Actively engaging students in the learning process makes for a much more satisfying experience for both the instructor and student, and using technology is one way to do this. In this time of shrinking budgets, however, justifying the expense of new software can be difficult. This presentation will focus on four software programs that are available at no cost on the Internet and will describe how each may be used in information literacy instruction. The four software programs that will be profiled are: Jing, which allows for the creation of short video demonstrations; Zoomerang, survey software that may be used …

Transforming Our Library Reading Room For A Leisure Reading Collection, Suzanne Roybal Jul 2010

Transforming Our Library Reading Room For A Leisure Reading Collection, Suzanne Roybal

Collected Faculty Scholarship

For our poster presentation, we wanted to highlight the success of our renovated reading room and the addition of a leisure reading collection in an academic library. One of the goals of our library strategic plan is to improve service to our community and to change the philosophical perception of our library so the students would have an inviting place to satisfy both heir educational and entertainment needs. Our drab 1960’s style reading room was the ideal location to refurbish and to locate our new leisure reading collection of books and magazines. To provide a pleasant environment for the students …

Mapping Information Literacy Outcomes And Other Intellectual Skills Into Students' Educational Experiences, Patricia A. Iannuzzi, L Dee Fink

Library Faculty Presentations

The 2007 report, College Learning for the New Global Century, outlines a cluster of intellectual and practical skills that are critical components of a liberal education: inquiry and analysis; critical and creative thinking; written and oral communication; quantitative literacy; information literacy; and teamwork and problem solving. The learning outcomes associated with information literacy relate to and incorporate many of the learning outcomes in all of these skill clusters. Participants in this session will address how these information literacy and related learning outcomes can be mapped into student learning experiences at three levels: in an individual course, in an academic sequence …

Situated Practices Of Information Use And Representation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Web Design Project For Boys, Kristen Rebmann Jun 2010

Situated Practices Of Information Use And Representation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Web Design Project For Boys, Kristen Rebmann

Faculty Publications

This article explores the production practices employed by children building personal webpages in a semi-structured afterschool program: the Fifth Dimension (5D). Following a critical Multiliteracies (CritMLs) approach to learning design, this ethnographic study introduced web-building practices to the children of the 5D and followed their production of personal webpages over a 9 month period. By structuring the intervention this way, it was possible to simultaneously observe the development of both the webpage as artifact as well as the child-participant. Along these lines, the study describes the unique and particular social contexts from which personal webpages emerge and develop over time. …

Using Podcasts For Assessing Information Research, Lauren Yannotta, Brian Lym, Shiao-Chuan Kung Apr 2010

Using Podcasts For Assessing Information Research, Lauren Yannotta, Brian Lym, Shiao-Chuan Kung

Publications and Research

This paper reports on the use of podcast audio recordings to assess learning in a hybrid information research course. Evidence of learning that appeared in the audio recordings and how the project affected student learning were investigated. Findings suggest that student-created podcasts can be beneficial in that instructors can see what students learned from the podcast content; students can see evidence of own learning by looking at before and after podcasts; and that students see methods used by other students and reflect on own methods/knowledge.

Media Literacy Education : A Case Study Of The New Mexico Media Literacy Project, Sam Nkana

Dissertations

Problem. England and Australia are the frontrunners in the establishment of media literacy education in schools, providing performance and content standards, norm-referenced tests, and pre-service university training for a specialty in media education. Canada is also in the advanced stage in the development of a media literacy curriculum. The United States, although a major producer of media, lags behind these countries in preparing its teachers and students to understand the media. Although national education standards and the curricular frameworks of all 50 states now contain one or more elements calling for some form of media literacy education, only a handful …

Ubiquitous Research: Integrating Library Resources Into Online Courses., Kate Lyons, Elisabeth Tappeiner

Publications and Research

Online learning is transforming the way colleges and universities offer credit bearing courses. Now students are able to finish some or all of a degree online, with courses and programs from the hard sciences to the humanities. Nevertheless, a college education is comprised of a variety of educational and social activities that extend beyond a discrete class. Classroom learning is enriched and supported by services across campus, from the writing center to tutoring services, to the library.

This article discusses the experience of librarians working in a small, urban community college in integrating library collections, reference services, and information literacy …
