In 2014, the DU Libraries began to address a lack of work by and about the Cheyenne and Arapaho people in its collections, and moved toward reparative change in response to historical traumas suffered by Indigenous Peoples. The history of this work and its origins—which led to the creation of the Libraries’ Collection Diversification Task Force (CDTF) and now informs the Libraries’ collection development philosophy and operational inclusivity—are discussed in the “Developments Leading to the Collection Diversification Task Force” section of this chapter. What happens when you let a librarian blend their personal interest in graphic novels and manga with collection development and outreach, even if it falls outside of their primary work areas? This session will cover the basics of building and managing graphic novel and manga collections in academic libraries, the development of our library’s graphic novel and manga collection, as well as some of the ways in which our library has worked to increase student engagement using graphic novels and manga as a draw.

Academic and public library collections are developed based on the needs of the communities that surround them. Technology has increased the way users access information, and the way libraries offer information to their users. However, the accessibility of electronic resources for users with print disabilities remains an issue that has yet to have an equitable remedy. This paper identifies the challenges of visually impaired users, the developments in law, the current state of accessibility in academic and public library collections policies, and the current formats and products that are leading the way.

In the summer of 2016 two Hunter College librarians, working with a colleague in the Republic of Armenia, conducted an IRB-approved focus group at the American University of Armenia in Yerevan, Armenia. This group drew participants from the libraries and other academic departments of the American University of Armenia as well as Yerevan State University, a large public institution. The discussion attempted to ascertain whether these libraries have devised effective strategies to acquire materials and build collections in the face of the challenges they face (budgetary, linguistic, and sometimes political) and whether faculty at these institutions feel their library’s collection …

This research examined the beliefs and actions of US midwestern librarians concerning intellectual freedom and collection development. The results are presented in two complementary articles; the first article provided some background and the results pertaining to intellectual freedom, whereas the second article focuses on the results for collection development questions and concludes with a broader discussion. This research project examined the beliefs and actions of US midwestern librarians concerning intellectual freedom and collection development. Technical standards are a form of gray literature that describe consensus for a wide variety of applications. They promote safety, quality, and interchangeability of parts. In academic libraries, standards have largely been associated with engineering collections, despite having connections to many disciplines. Engineering and technology accreditation bodies and employers continue to expect graduates to have knowledge and experience with standards upon graduation. This article provides a brief history of standards collection development in academic libraries, discusses the challenges of standards collections, shares a case study of standards information literacy curricula integration, and offers considerations for the future of standards collections.

Building on the successful 2017 presentation, A Primer in Science and Engineering Collection Development, this presentation will explore a content type that stumps the engineering librarian and acquisitions librarian alike - standards. Technical standards are documents that establish a uniform practice or process for materials, procedures, and products. Each of us uses standards daily - from USB ports to elevators to lights, automobiles, bridges, standardized train tracks, and much more. Standards are prepared and issued by a professional groups, committees, societies, or governmental agencies, and can influence safety and performance and the role of business and manufacturing.

This paper is an empirical study of collection development policy of electronic resources in university libraries in South East Nigeria. The study ascertains the types of policies guiding electronic resources collection development practices; identifies the tools used in making sound electronic resources collection development; and determines the criteria considered in the evaluation of electronic resources of university libraries in South East Nigeria. Influences On Library Liaison And Faculty Collaboration In Collection Development, Tim Butzen

Much has been written about library liaison programs in academic libraries throughout the United States. Since their inception, liaison programs have emphasized the collaboration between librarians and faculty in collection development. This brief paper synthesizes relevant literature to identify the dynamics that currently influence this collaboration. Those that emerge here include liaison job descriptions and collection development policies, direct service and collaboration, information reciprocity, relational factors, and budgets. The paper concludes with suggestions for interdisciplinary collaboration and for future teaching and research.

The dearth of indigenous knowledge (IK) in libraries in general and in South Africa in particular is cause for concern as the situation can lead to its demise. Awareness of the usefulness of IK in various aspects of community life is well documented. It is imperative that public libraries, as gateways to information and knowledge should be at the forefront of facilitating access to all knowledge, including IK. The article explores how public libraries in South Africa can facilitate access to indigenous knowledge. This paper explores the issues and criteria involved in developing a creditable documentary film collection about the Romani people for an academic library. Throughout their history, the Roma, or Gypsies, have dealt with biased, romanticized versions of their story, perpetuated by stereotypes found in legend, literature, song, and film. The expectation in the present undertaking is that the evidence coming from documentary films provides an effective antidote for misrepresentations. The paper reviews pertinent literature, suggests a selection process, and furnishes commentaries on individual titles as they relate to a framework based on the Romani historical and geographical narrative.
