Institutional repositories act as hubs of shared cultural memory and heritage and possess untapped potential in their breadth and reach. In an effort to realize this potential, we are activating our institutional repository as a platform to inform the community, both at Bryant and in Rhode Island, of the diverse array of works (archival, creative, and scholarly) produced by our University students, faculty, and staff. A team of Bryant University Librarians are participating in the EXCITE Transformation for Libraries program through the Connecticut State Library. We conducted a series of structured group and one-on-one conversations with students, faculty, and staff in order to learn about how they think and feel about teamwork, the library, and collaboration at the library. We found that students in particular were far more responsive to community sessions than in taking surveys.

Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users. The health system context meant unique challenges designing a taxonomy that supported end users as well as institutional goals and branding. Health systems have unique user needs for specialized collections and organizational schemes. With a comparatively large volume of items being added there are also concerns with the backend structures to accommodate the institutions’ large research output.

At the Portland State University (PSU) Library, we value diversity, equity, and inclusion and have demonstrated this commitment by design with the new, responsive Primo. Designing the new Primo for ease of use for discovery and delivery for 30,000 students was the tantamount motivation for our new Primo launch, fall term 2016. The paper identifies the perception and use of Semantic and Social Features of the digital library among library and Information professionals (LISPs) and Users and presents a comparative study of their competencies in tune with the semantic and social features. As part of the survey of the special libraries in NCR of Delhi, the questionnaires and personal visits were made to 48 libraries (spread over 16 categories) to collect the primary data. Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Lightning Talk: The Language Archive: Migrating To An Easier, Sustainable Open-Source Solution., Jeroen Geerts

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The Language Archive at the Max Planck Institute Nijmegen (https://archive.mpi.nl) is an extensive online repository of language resources. The archive was developed using in-house solutions, including metadata creation tools, depositing tools and an archive-browser. Development had been going on for more than 15 years, but was difficult and expensive to maintain. Additionally, some of these tools had were fairly complex to use, not meeting current user needs. Therefore, the choice was made to migrate to a more sustainable open-source solution, easier to use, maintain and to develop upon.

Institutional Repository Workflow, Project Management, And Outreach In A Remote/Online Library Environment, Daina Dickman

In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

Collaborative Librarianship

This paper presents a project designed to promote and increase the use of graphic novels, previously a seldom utilized collection, at the University at Albany Libraries. Several units in the Libraries collaborated to add additional graphic novels to the collection, augment bibliographic records with genre headings to enhance discovery, and promote this collection in the University Libraries and online. The Libraries used a variety of marketing techniques, including social media. Circulation statistics were recorded before, during, and after the promotional activities. On numerous occasions over the course of the UNL Libraries’ continuing discussions concerning the allocation of collections monies, the UNL Libraries’ liaison librarians have made a variety of assertions, arguments, and claims concerning their patrons and their patrons’ needs. For example, the humanities librarians have repeatedly staked a claim to the humanities’ being the “book” discipline and have made a variety of assertions concerning humanities patrons and humanities books that could be treated as testable hypothesis.

In this paper, we discuss possible pedagogical applications for virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), within a humanities/social sciences curriculum, articulating a critical need for academic libraries to collect and curate 3D objects. We contend that building infrastructure is critical to keep pace with innovative pedagogies and scholarship. We offer theoretical avenues for libraries to build a repository 3D object files to be used in VR and AR tools and sketch some anticipated challenges. Data Collection Curated With An Application Ontology Describes The Methods And Results Upon Performing An Ex-Vivo Voltage-Clamp Assay On Outer Hair Cells Of The Mammalian Cochlea, Brenda Farrell, Jason Bengtson

Research Data

This data collection describes the electrical properties of outer hair cells isolated from the mammalian cochlea of the domestic guinea pig. This data was obtained by performing whole-cell patch clamp voltage clamp assay on cells and monitoring the electrical admittance during a DC voltage ramp. The membrane capacitance was then calculated at each membrane potential from this admittance, and the voltage-independent and voltage-dependent membrane capacitance was determined upon further analysis. In some case the DC conductance was also measured by interrogation of the cell with voltage-step function which was calculated from the change in the mean steady-state current with respect …

CALASYS is the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)’s academic resource and repository system. The purpose of the system is to collect, organize, and store scholarly publications, library and information science related resources created or contributed by CALA members and others in the library field. The CALASYS Committee will share the experiences of collecting data, creating metadata, and improving access to the data. This paper is a reflection on a library system migration project from two project managers at two different campuses. The authors discuss challenges encountered, approaches taken, priorities established, and perhaps most importantly, what each would do differently with the benefit of hindsight.
