Welcome to the Spring/Summer issue of SLIS Connecting. It has been a busy time here in SLIS. This is the overview of what has been happing here at the School of Library and Information Science at Southern Miss. This issue features six research projects along with our regular columns.

The voices of activist student leaders and organizations are crucial to preserve, whether it be in a formal archives or as part of an archiving process undertaken by individuals and groups to preserve their legacies. Increasingly, these voices are found in social media and other online and web platforms that are difficult to preserve. Wildcat Histories is a year-long, grant-funded collaboration between the University of Kentucky Libraries and the University of Kentucky Latino Student Union (LSU) to research the best technologies for (as of July 2023) and then carry out the preservation of activist student organization social media content. The McGovern Historical Center recently digitized and shared online more than 50 archival films, videos, and sound recordings, on the History of the Texas Medical Center.

The following programs: “The Texas Medical Center” (1972), “Visions” (1985), “Visions Fulfilled” (1990) and “The Power of a Dream” (1998) touted the advances in communications technologies in use throughout the TMC. Several newly digitized programs showed how audio, video, and network technologies have long been a part of the work of the TMC Library.

Assessing Finding Aid Discoverability After Description Improvements Using Web Analytics, Ashlyn Velte

Archivists use best practices, like More Product Less Process, and professional standards, like Describing Archives: A Content Standard, to create descriptions of archival collections that promote collection use and discoverability. However, most existing usability literature assessing online finding aids looks at navigability and ease of use, but does not examine increase in traffic and discoverability of those finding aids. University of Colorado Boulder Archives improved online finding aid descriptions on ArchivesSpace during 2020. Google Analytics data from 2020 and 2021 show an increase in users and sessions on ArchivesSpace. It also indicates that most users arrive to the site from …

Information was sought on the level of collaboration between academic libraries and known key players championing the prevention and control of COVID-19, the activities carried out in compliance with set protocols, information services offered, and the challenges faced. Results showed moderate level of collaboration and very limited direct synergistic interaction with public health groups, while they provided patrons with an avenue to source updates from library websites. There was high compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines; however, there was no specialized COVID-19 information service desk for patrons' inquiries. This thesis is grounded in a reflection and analysis of the building of an institution whose foundation and visuals position the narratives of Black individuals at the forefront of Underground Railroad interpretation. In 2018, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center opened to the public after decades in the making. Its permanent exhibition, One More River to Cross, set in motion a shift in power – of whose stories are represented and shared – generated by visual activism.

What is a collection file, anyway? This work-in-progress summarizes the results of a sample survey of archivists to better understand the purpose, function, and contents of collection files, how archivists learn to create collection files, and their potential for public access and use. From these results, we can extrapolate a preliminary definition of the collection file, as well as the potential for future study and critical analysis of the practical elements of collection file work, especially in relation to archival accessioning, deaccessioning, and repatriation.
