A History Harvest is a collaborative approach to community archiving, which leverages the skills of historians, librarians, or archivists and creates experiential learning opportunities for students to collect, digitize, and share cultural heritage objects and oral histories online. In many cases, archival skills are needed to curate and preserve the digital objects created and collected during History Harvest events. In this session, presenters discuss how we can contribute our skills, knowledge, and repository resources to support our local and regional communities and diversify the historical voice preserved in our collections.

Winthrop University has an extensive archives and special collections that has never been cataloged. Digital Commons @ Winthrop officially launched in January 2016 and our archives staff worked diligently to add items to our repository. The question then became how can we integrate this work in to our ILS system. Seeing a need for action but without the time or manpower to individually catalog these collections we turned to the Digital Collection Gateway. Academic librarians and archivists occupy a unique role as researchers and as practitioners who support faculty and student researchers. However, the ways in which librarians and archivists think about research is largely unexamined, while faculty conceptions of research have been studied extensively. Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, like many other libraries and archives, collects, preserves, and provides access to dissertations as original works of student scholarship in conjunction with degrees awarded by the University. The processes of collecting and preserving student scholarship becomes difficult as new ETD models and formats force existing workflows and platforms to adapt. This talk will identify emerging preservation and long-term access challenges associated with new forms of scholarship and will borrow from the digital preservation field to identify innovative and collaborative approaches for addressing these challenges.

The internet is growing, but old information continues to disappear daily.

Many MySpace users were dismayed to discover earlier this year that the social media platform lost 50 million files uploaded between 2003 and 2015. The failure of MySpace to care for and preserve its users’ content should serve as a reminder that relying on free third-party services can be risky. MySpace has probably preserved the users’ data; it just lost their content. The data was valuable to MySpace; the users’ content less so.

This paper aims to study the awareness of cultural heritage using their demographic variables.For this study data was collected through an online questionnaire. A total of 201 students from Pondicherry University participated in this study.The study used SPSS version 20 to analyze the collected data. Independent Samples t-test and one-way ANOVA tests are used to test the stated hypotheses.Based on these tests results, this study accepted three hypotheses i.e. H2d, H3c and H3d. Archival Futures is the most recent addition to the body of literature on archival futurism. Consisting of nine essays written by mostly academic lecturers or professors from the UK, Australia, Canada and the United States, this volume considers the impact of technology on the future of archives. Major technical concerns for the future include big data, blockchain, artificial intelligence, format challenges, and storage issues. Ultimately, the volume falls short of contextualizing archives within troubling future global trends, particularly those of labor casualization and climate change.

For some fifty years, 8mm/Super 8 movie film was a widespread format for home movies and amateur hobbyists; yet the films and projection or telecine transfer equipment are now aging and obscure, presenting a difficulty for archivists and filmmakers. Online DIY solutions usually involve photographing the film with a DSLR and macro bellows, requiring a high degree of expertise and expense. The Language Archive at the Max Planck Institute Nijmegen (https://archive.mpi.nl) is an extensive online repository of language resources. The archive was developed using in-house solutions, including metadata creation tools, depositing tools and an archive-browser. Development had been going on for more than 15 years, but was difficult and expensive to maintain. Additionally, some of these tools had were fairly complex to use, not meeting current user needs. Therefore, the choice was made to migrate to a more sustainable open-source solution, easier to use, maintain and to develop upon.

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services increases the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at a medium-sized institution had been using Archive-It to collect websites for a few years, but the information was isolated in a separate platform and wasn't effectively marketed to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the website collections into the discovery layer. Metadata was added at the seed level and indexed on a single, user-friendly platform. Attendees learned about implementing digital archive collections and explored how to increase their visibility through marketing.

This study aims to discover the library’s promotional effectiveness level based on overall promotional mix concepts consisted of six sub-variables. Those six sub-variables include personal selling, advertising, sales promotion, public relation and publicity, learning materials, and corporate design sub-variables. It is quantitative research by using a survey method. The survey was conducted on 100 respondents with a convenience sampling technique. Following her experience of the Virginia Tech campus shooting in 2007, filmmaker and librarian Ashley Maynor set out to explore the phenomenon of temporary memorials and so-called “grief archives” using both documentary filmmaking and other qualitative research methods. She subsequently published her findings about Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and other public tragedies as Response to the Unthinkable: Collecting & Archiving Condolence & Temporary Memorial Materials Following Public Tragedies, to help fill a large gap in LIS literature about the best practices for libraries in responding to crises in their communities.
