This chapter uses the experience of two undergraduate students conducting research in their university archives to consider the “hidden curriculum” entailed in archival research at some institutions. When diverse identities and experiences are not represented in our archives, we run the risk of communicating a lack of value for those identities, producing a feeling of marginalization and exclusion for some students and foreclosing an opportunity to build solidarity across difference for others. Rhetoric and composition scholars have recently called our attention to the value of archival research in the undergraduate classroom, leading to rich collaborations with archivists and librarians at many institutions. As we engaged our own pedagogical collaboration as a university archivist and English faculty member, we realized that, though we might use slightly different language to articulate them or cite different sources in support of them, many of our learning goals overlapped. The Latin American Sheet Music Collection, MSS 932 BC, 1835-1996, contains many illustrated scores which have the composers’ photographs and signatures. There are songs from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay, as well as Spain, Portugal, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States. The largest component is from Mexico. The musical range represented includes popular and classical music with boleros, tangos, marches, waltzes, corridos, rancheras, fox trot and regional canciones. Scrapbooks are notoriously difficult to digitize and present in a way that both preserves the context of the item and supports discoverability in a digital collection environment. Digitization of complex mixed media items is time consuming. Metadata creation is a challenge. By digitizing only the items that would be rendered inaccessible by encapsulation, questions about presentation were bypassed. Items could be presented as individual assets. An umbrella collection of archival supplementary material was created in CONTENTdm and individual items from the scrapbook were connected through metadata rather than as a singular resource. This article details an experiment in an 11^th and 12^th grade 3-week intensive course, the Science and History of Contagious Disease. The course was an interdisciplinary survey of how diseases are spread along with an examination of social responses. Although both lecture and discussion based, the course revolved primary around a trip in which we led approximately 22 students through archival research in the City of Savannah Municipal Archives on the Yellow Fever epidemics of 1820, 1854, and 1876. Audiovisual materials can be overlooked by researchers due to their more complicated access issues, but archivists can facilitate their use by creating more granular finding aids that incorporate audiovisual materials by content rather than format. Using the procedures at Emory University's Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library as a case study, the author argues for a professional culture in which collections are not viewed as “finished” until all components are accessible.

This article describes a collaboration between Grinnell College’s libraries and its Office of Development and Alumni Relations on an oral history project in which college alumni are interviewed about their experiences at the college. Such close collaborations between development offices and libraries are rare. This collaboration was successful due to the equal participation of all parties.

[Summary] The authenticity, integrity, and provenance of resources we encounter on the web are increasingly in question. While many people are inured to the possibility of altered images, the easy accessibility of powerful software tools that synthesize audio and video will unleash a torrent of convincing “deepfakes” into our social discourse.
