The K-12 schools in Paris and Bourbon County, Kentucky were segregated from the earliest schools developed after the U.S. Civil War up to the 1960s. This presentation was an overview of the development of the schools, the decrease in the student populations, and school integration in the Paris and Bourbon County schools. The presentation was an opportunity for all students, of all races, to share their memories and the memorabilia they had with them.

In this session, archivists and attendees share personal and professional reasons for hosting/attending the workshop, workshop challenges and successes, and more. Since 1958, the Archives of the Southern Sociological Society have been housed in the Special Collections Research Center in the University of Kentucky Libraries. The collection includes official minutes, correspondence, newsletters, membership lists, photographs, and other official documents generated by the Society and dating from the Society's founding in 1935 to the present. These records of historical value have been provided by presidents, secretaries, treasurers, committee chairs, executive officers, and other Society officials so that the Archives may be available to scholars who wish to explore the history of the Society and the development of Sociology in the Southern United …

In Fall 2015, local historian Yvonne Giles approached staff in the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at the University of Kentucky Libraries about holding a basic archives workshop for clerks and secretaries of Lexington African American Baptist churches. Staff were excited to partner with Yvonne and held the first workshop for four participants in November 2015. The second workshop, given in early March 2016, attracted 15 participants from a wide variety of local organizations. A third workshop was held in June 2016. "Capstone Officials" And Public Records: Risk, Buy-In, And Archival Selection, Ruth E. Bryan

Use of records schedules as appraisal tools works well for routine records held by low-level employees in public institutions. Records created by top-level public officials, however, can be more challenging to schedule. Using NARA's recent definition of "capstone officials" as a starting concept, panelists representing public universities and state and federal governments present case studies from their own institutions dealing with policy creation for capstone officials' records, records schedules and public records laws, and archival selection.

University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center implemented Archivists’ Toolkit in 2009-2010 and ArchivesSpace in 2015. We continue to explore and develop procedures, policies, and uses of AS. Over fifty years ago an historian and a library director traveled the back roads of Kentucky (USA) with a portable microfilm camera, two lights, and a dream of preserving Kentucky’s newspapers. The Association of Earth Science Editors held their annual meeting at the University of Kentucky in October 2014. They requested a technical talk on archives and preservation topics. A group of co-presenters organized by Ruth Bryan conducted a survey of the membership (results in the Introduction) and crafted 30-minute presentations on individual topics. Included in this paper is the Introduction and the Legal (property rights/donor restrictions) and Copyright (intellectual rights) presentation of the technical talk.

In the United States, archival appraisal has been a key step in providing access to records, largely in response to the bulk of modern organizational records, the gaps in documenting underrepresented individuals and groups, and the shrinking of resources. With Frank Boles moderating and commenting, four archivists describe appraisal decisions that they applied while acquiring or administering large or complex collections and reflect on the selection paradigms that they applied in the decision-making process to enable access.

This case study is about collection development policies, both on the repository level as well as applying them within individual collections, specifically faculty papers. "Dust" is a metaphor for both the on-the-ground experience of archival appraisal as well as for the “dust” of people’s lives and events that historians are “breathing in” when they work with primary source material (Carol Steedman, Dust: The archive and cultural history, 2002). From the perspective of the cultural value of archives, this “dust” is what we select when we’re transforming a mountain of paper or electronic records into archives.

This presentation will discuss the physical characteristics of recycled paper used for Japanese printed books from the18th to 19th century, exploring their production methods and historical developments based on the collaborative experiments with the University of Iowa’s Center for the Book (UICB).

The majority of conservation practices and studies of traditional Japanese paper-based artifacts have focused on the high end arts such as screen paintings and scrolls, luxuriously printed books (such as Sagabon), and certain ukiyoe prints and paintings.
