Elsevier has recently highlighted The TMC Library’s Digital Commons Exhibits as one of their “Current DC Exhibit Customers” featured on their Digital Commons Exhibits page. Since 2023, The TMC Library started to add Digital Commons Exhibits to this online collection available to users worldwide. Currently there are 8 regular exhibits, as well as a scrolling exhibit available featuring a few of the following: Historical A/V, Houston’s Fight Against Tuberculosis and Christmas Seals (1911-1980s) and The History of the Texas Medical Center Library: From 1915 to Present.

The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library invite to the 2024 Book & Author Event featuring Jennifer M. Ross-Nazzal, PhD author of Making Space for Women: Stories from Trailblazing Women of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Dr. Ross-Nazzal, winner of the 2023 Liz Carpenter Award for Best Book on the History of Women will challenge perceptions and opens STEM fields—including space medicine—to new generations of women by bringing forth twenty-one engaging interviews conducted for the NASA Oral History Project in this compelling volume.

Check the recently updated Open Access Publishing Support LibGuide for the most recent information about scholarly publications. This newly revamped LibGuide is a great resource to learn about Read and Publish. Read and Publish is also known as a transformative agreement, it is an open access (OA) model that bundles payment for reading access and payment for publishing into a single contract.

Teaching in Clinics is one of the open access, peer-reviewed online academic journals published semiannually in the Digital Commons@TMC. The journal aims to encourage researchers and educators to share their studies for implementing novel teaching methods. In addition to excellence of teaching, Teaching in Clinics seeks to bring academic discussions of the incoming or present challenges in health and education policies. The most recent issue launched late last month.

The Friends invited students to enjoy cookies and sparkling water and shared the Friends’ mission to support the TMC Library. Students also entered a drawing to win a door prize including a ticket to the Fall Book & Author Event and membership in the Friends of the TMC Library. Archivists at the McGovern Historical Center, recently published a guide to the audiovisual items found in the Hermann Hospital Historical Archive. Nearly 200 audio recordings, approximately 250 videos, and 46 reels of film are now described item-by-item and can be searched or browsed by title online.

Digitizing Medical Illustrations From The Heart Bulletin + The Role Of Art In The Medical Field, Johana Canales

The Houston-based Medical Arts Publishing Foundation produced illustrated medical publications like the Cancer Bulletin, Heart Bulletin, and Psychiatric Bulletin. The Foundation’s records began arriving at the McGovern Historical Center in 1992. Since then, some of the collection’s medical illustrations had already been digitized, including several complete issues of the Psychiatric Bulletin from 1950-1960 and the Heart Bulletin’s medical illustrations series from 1951 and 1964.

To provide better service to the growing, and increasingly international, Digital Commons community, Google Maps on  Digital Commons Dashboards Digital Commons Dashboards and Author Dashboards was replaced with Bing Maps. Readership Activity Maps will continue using Google Maps. Although these maps may look slightly different, there is no difference in their functionality.

Selections From The Papers Of Murdina Macfarquhar Desmond, Md Digitized And Online, Alice Sherwood

Almost two hundred items from the Murdina MacFarquhar Desmond, MD papers have been digitized and are now available online. Dr. Desmond (1916-2003) contributed to the fields of pediatrics and neonatology during her long tenure (1948-1986) on the pediatrics faculty of Baylor College of Medicine and service to Jefferson Davis Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital.

This collection consists of Dorothy Otto's personal and professional papers related to her long career on the faculty of the Cizik School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston. Much of the collection documents Otto’s work at the Cizik School of Nursing, as well as the history of the School itself. There are faculty meeting minutes, handbooks, and other records from the School’s early development in the 1970s. See more at MS 173.
