The William J. Schull Photograph Collection, contains photographic prints, positive and negative transparencies, and text ephemera from Dr. Schull's career and many international travels as a global scientific research consultant in the effects of radiation and human genetics and connoisseur of the world's cultures. Dr. Schull collected and preserved all of the material in this collection in the course of his professional career and private life from 1945 to 2014. See more at MS 170.

Walter J. Russell donated the material in this collection in 1986, 1989, and 1995. Dr. Russell received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the St. Louis University Medical School, in 1952. In July of 1959, he was appointed Chief of the Department of Radiology of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. Dr. Russell continued his to conduct his research with the ABCC successor organization, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation. See more at MS 063.

The Armin Weinberg, PhD papers contains born-digital materials and ephemeral items related to his work in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Eastern Europe. The collection also includes two View Master projectors and “Stereoscopic Atlas of the Human Anatomy” by David L. Bassett, MD, complete set of 1-213 slides, T-shirt of "International Conference on the Health Effects of Low Dose Radiation", artifacts, books, business cards, dombra (instrument), glass hedgehog figurine, camel figurine, Kazakhstan canteen, 3 traditional Kazakhstan robes and hat, and colorimeter that belonged to his father. Papers consist primarily of personal and professional correspondence; board meeting and committee meeting minutes and reports; drafts, manuscripts, and published professional papers; documentation chronicling his role with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) in Japan, his role in the organization and development of a regional medical plan centered in Houston, of the University of Texas (UT) Postgraduate School of Medicine and its Division of Continuing Education, and of M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute (MDAH), currently known as UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and its renowned Department of Pediatrics. See more at MS 044.

The Robert D. Lange Collection contains publications and reprints from the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, The Journal of the Hiroshima Medical Association, Blood, The Journal of Hematology, Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine. Unique to this collection are the 46 lantern slides. The contribution consists of lantern slides, publications and a set of 35 mm slides. The print and photographic materials in this small collection complement each other well. See more at MS 064.

The collection includes items such as photographs and elevation drawings for the building that was built in the 1950s. The collection also includes information about the accreditation of the school as well as it's curriculum. Curriculum resources include teacher guides, study materials, and course catalogs and schedules. The collection also directories from UT Dental Branch as well as Texas Dental Journal and Houston District Dental Society. See more at IC 009.

The Richard S. Ruiz, MD, papers, MS 150, includes materials from 1925 through 2007 related to the Hermann Eye Center and Memorial Hermann Hospital. Dr. Ruiz was the Chief of Ophthalmology at Hermann Hospital who built up and improved the teaching faculty at Hermann Hospital and the one with the vision for the Hermann Eye Center and made it possible. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Ruiz's career. See more at MS 150.

The McGovern Historical Center (MHC) archivists have been digitizing images from their collection in response to patron inquiries, library exhibits, and patron requests. The digitized images are part of the Texas Medical Center Photograph Collection from 1938 – 1982.

Non-librarians often have the mistaken idea that because a publication is online it is cheaper than print, and that libraries actually save money by going fully digital. The truth is, academic libraries pay many, many more times above list price for providing the convenience of online institutional access, and the prices increase each year. We hope the following infographic will give our users a sense for how much annual subscriptions to popular medical journals and journal packages cost the TMC Library.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) is moving to a new web hosting platform in early 2022. The migration is corresponding with a visual refresh of the site. The new website is being designed to offer a new reader-centric look and feel for PNAS readers and authors.

The migration date is slated for February 28, 2022.

Manuscript Finding Aids

Dr. Tessmer served as the first Director of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC), NAS-NRC Field Agency, from 1948 to 1951. His archival collection relates to the origin and subsequent progress of the ABCC. The bulk of the material in his collection is administrative in nature. Included are semi-annual and annual reports, NAS and NRC committee reports, early negotiations, reports from the initial clinical surveys, published scientific reports and correspondence dating from 1947. Approximately, 300 photographs and 15 sets of negatives accompanied Dr. Tessmer's Collection. See more at MS 068.

The Murdina MacFarquhar Desmond, MD papers contains photographs of Dr. Desmond as a medical student, Naval officer, and a faculty member of Baylor College of Medicine. The main portion of her papers deal with her work at Jefferson Davis Hospital, including grants she received from the John A. Hartford Foundation, and at Texas Children's Hospital. Ms 111 Guide To Henry Renfert, Md Papers (1935-1992), Henry Reinfert (1920-2003)

Manuscript Finding Aids

The papers of Dr. Henry Renfert are made up mostly of personal letters from his time in the Navy during and after World War II, letters from the time of his residency training in between tours of duty, and official paperwork regarding his time in the Navy and Navy Reserves. Most of the material dates from between 1944 and 1954, with a few exceptions.

The collection also contains some miscellaneous items such as budget lists, bills, novelty poems, newspaper items about Renfert, Sr., and Dr. Renfert’s military medals. See more at MS 111.

A large portion of the collection is composed of reprints of Dr. Arnett's numerous publications, most on the genetics and genomics of multiple rheumatic diseases. See more at MS 141.

Texas Black Woman Physician: Carrie Jane Sutton, Md, Shannon Wood

February 8 is National Black Women Physicians Day! The McGovern Historical Center highlights one of many amazing Black women physicians in early Texas. In 1950, less than 6% of doctors nationwide were women. Of that number, less than 2% of women physicians in the United States were Black. To practice medicine as a Black woman in the south prior to the start of the Civil Rights Movement that is why celebrating these women’s accomplishments is so important.

This collections consisted of a black medical bag as well as medicines and medical tools that were apparently owned by A. G. Boss Brown, M.D. from Bosworth, Missouri. The materials range from good condition to very poor condition. As of January 2022, the bag itself is no longer part of the collection, and its disposition is unknown. See more at MS 136.
