The collection documents Dr. Elliott's career through committee and administrative reports, correspondence, legal papers, and legislative material. Also included are scrapbooks, personal memos, manuscripts, photographs, and audio tapes. There are copies of a number of Dr. Elliot's speeches, as well as materials relating to honors he received.

Manuscript Finding Aids

The Howard B. Hamilton, MD, papers, MS 66, includes material from 1945-1997 related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). Hamilton was the Chief of Clinical Laboratories for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission from 1956 until its dissolution in 1975. He served in the same capacity for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, which succeeded the ABCC, until 1984. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Hamilton's career, as well as his related scholarly work after his retirement from RERF. See more at MS 066.

Institutional Finding Aids

The University of Texas Speech and Hearing Institute records contains annual reports, information booklets, catalogs, brochures, reports, budget documents, and advisory board information. There are also three scrapbooks--one with contents from approximately 1964-1967, one from approximately 1973-1974, one from approximately 1991-1992. There are a number of photographs and newspaper clippings in the scrapbooks, whose pages have been dis-bound and placed in individual folders. Finally, the collection includes plaques, paperweights, and two VHS tapes. See more at IC 012.

The Paul Lensky, MD Photograph Collection contains 27 black and white photographs, each about 3.25" x 4.5" in size. The snapshots depict Dr. Lensky's friends and colleagues at Jefferson Davis Hospital on Buffalo Drive in Houston, Texas. While most photographs appear to be set in Houston, at least one was taken in Monterrey, Mexico. The photographs are dated 1947-1948, corresponding with Dr. Lensky's time at Jefferson Davis. Herbert Leonard Fred, MD was born in 1929 in Waco, Texas. This collection is arranged into the following series. Series I. Medical Life, Series II. Running Life, Series III. Family Life, Series IV. Ms 196 Guide To The Mac Suzuki Photograph Collection (1948-1952), Masamichi Suzuki (1918-2014)

The Mac Suzuki Photograph Collection, MS 196, contains 838 color slides of 35 mm film taken by Mac Suzuki, MD. Most of the images were taken in Japan between 1948 and 1952 while Dr. Suzuki’s worked with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. This material was donated by the children of Dr. Suzuki. The images are good condition although there is some evidence of vinegar syndrome. Most of the slides are Kodachrome with rich color and very sharp images depicting rural, tourist and work related scenes. A few slides are an off-brand of film, which account for the vinegar syndrome. See …

If you have been visited the library lately, you will notice there is a new exhibit on the first floor.

This exhibit highlights the extensive Texas State Board of Medical Examiners records (IC 058) of two physicians whose stories stood out. Hesiquio Rodriguez and Moore Yen. Though they were applying to the Texas State Board back in the 1950s and 1960s, Heisiquio Rodriguez’ and Moore Yen’s stories highlight themes that continue to resonate today.

This collection contains scrapbook and nursing cap of Ovelin Frances Fish Henderson (aka Billie). The items were received with the following note by K. Lynn Wieck (niece): "This is the scrapbook of my Aunt, Ovelin Frances Fish Henderson from 1929-1930 when she was in nursing school in Denver, CO. She was a psychiatric nurse for over 60 years. The Thomas Matney papers includes materials from 1926 through 2011 relating to Dr. Matney’s research in genetics, Dr. Matney’s teaching materials, and his research as a community activist into the support and well being of at-risk children. Professor Matney made important contributions to scientific understanding of cancer-causing agents and the genetic mechanisms that underlie the development of cancer. See more at MS 146.

The Elizabeth Vainraub Oral History contains digital video files, audio files, photographs, and prepared questions of an oral history interview of Elizabeth Vainraub conducted by Armin Weinberg and Sara Rozin. Vainraub's work was related to addressing the effects of the Chernobyl accident on those in the area at the time and those who immigrated from there to other locations including the US and Israel. The Texas Medical Center-Women's History Project contains audio interviews and print transcriptions of the interviews with women who made contributions to the biomedical and health care fields at the Texas Medical Center. Support organizations at the nursing and medical schools of UTHealth, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, began the project in 2013 with five interviews. See more at MS 171.

Archivists at the McGovern Historical Center are proud to announce the availability of the MS 200 John P. McGovern Medical Medallions Collection.

This collection consists of medallions commemorating people, conferences, and other events in the history of medicine. While many of the these were produced as commemorative items in the 1960s and 1970s, others date back as far as the late 1700s.
