Public Libraries And The Economically Disadvantaged: A Bibliometric Assessment Of Published Research, 1996-2016, Scott A. Manganello

One of the greatest challenges that American public libraries have faced is serving the disadvantaged and homeless population. This research project analyzed publication trends in LIS literature from the past 20 years pertaining to research related to public libraries and the economically disadvantaged, specifically publication trend over time, core journals, most prolific lead authors, and focus of the studies.

African American Archival Resources: Representation In North Carolina, South Carolina, And Georgia, Tekla Ali Johnson

The breadth, scope, security, evaluation, and preservation of African American archival resources in the United States are all understudied. Moreover, the scope and contents of the majority of African American resources are likely unknown. The purpose of this study was to compile a record of collections holding primary resources on African Americans to conducting research on African American Archival Resources in three states, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Gender Roles And Gender Stereotypes In Four Newbery Award-Winning Books, Alex Paige Brower

As gender equality has become a more prominent issue and men and women have become more equal, one would expect this change to be reflected in children’s literature. This study examines four Newbery-Award winning books to determine if this change is apparent.

For every advance of information and communication technology in the 20thand 21st centuries, there has been gap between those who can readily adopt and benefit from it and those who cannot. As higher education becomes increasingly enmeshed in Internet-based learning, academic libraries will need to maintain and even increase digital literacy and fluency instruction in spite of presumed reduced need. Furthermore, academic libraries themselves will need to examine their own status in the divide.

By educating internal stakeholders and creating allies, information managers can facilitate institutional change and are much more able to request and receive funding to pursue innovative programs requiring technical infrastructure.

A university's special collections is often a featured stop on campus tours, whether for visiting dignitaries, prospective students, or guest lecturers. This poster presentation highlights successful planning that has allowed a special collections without dedicated classrooms or galleries to utilize limited exhibit spaces in the reading room for rotating and long-term exhibits that align with library-wide initiatives while also focusing student and visitor attention on curatorial strengths, cross-disciplinary opportunities, emerging research trends, and hidden collections.

Summer is here, bringing the potential for storms, heavy rain, flooding, high winds, and more. However, it is not only summer storms we must be concerned with, as disaster can strike at any time, caused by Mother Nature or by humans – think plumbing or electrical problems. In any event, we as archivists, librarians, and home historians should be ready for any type of disaster by being prepared and having a plan. Today we will focus on preparing for a disaster at home or in the office. Next time we will explore the disaster plan itself.

Using The Anti-Racism Digital Library And Thesaurus To Understand Information Access, Authority, Value And Privilege, Anita Coleman

The new ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, specifically the six threshold concepts about information mirror the experiences of the author as a researcher studying the representation of anti-racism in bibliographic information systems. Anti-racism, in general, is a great concept to use when teaching information literacy and the paper discusses how antiracism information literacy can be taught and learned as part of theological and religious studies education. Since the conference is in Atlanta, the article begins with two stories about the scholar Dubois who lived there and that illustrate some of the IL concepts discussed.

More Than a Memory: Exploring Purdue University's History Through Objects extends a 2014 undergraduate effort, which resulted in the publication Little Else Than a Memory: Purdue Students Search for the Class of 1904. Purdue students in 2016-2017 academic year sought to understand the history of Purdue University and to recover the student experience more than 100 years prior, at the turn of the twentieth century. This research, conducted primarily within Purdue Archives and Special Collections, includes choosing, investigating, and analyzing the material objects those students left behind.

It mentions the hurdles of being a collector as his collection is often kept and that the challenge is in raising awareness. But teachers too often overlook the fact that literary analysis is not the only means of facilitating inquiry-based learning. This study is a content analysis of a collection of several hundred Army manuals published by the War Department, the precursor of the United States Department of Defense (U.S. War Department, 2013). The manuals were in varying conditions, address a variety of topics, and were published in years surrounding and during World War II.

Since the end of the Second World War some 70 years ago, research and scholarship featuring wartime contributions of the average British citizenhasfocused largely on men's experiences of combat, the various roles of government agencies, or the assumed viability and tenacity of political and military leaders. The role of gender in the experience of war was often a side-note, not a focus of research. With the passing of the USA Patriot Act in 2001 following the events of 9/11, libraries on the national scale have had to staunchly defend issues of privacy and confidentially more-so than ever before. Evidence of this lies not only in statements within the ALA’s Resolution on the USA PATRIOT Act and Libraries but also in other core documents which guide policy development in public libraries (ALA 2005). Intellectual Freedom and privacy are two of the major issues addressed and protected by the American Library Association through the Office of Intellectual Freedom and the Library Bill of Rights (ALA 1996).
