Inhabitants of Great Britain have been brewing and drinking ale since the Bronze Ages. The province of Britannia and its capital Londinium were ruled by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago. Romans were great builders of roads that connected tabernae, which served food, wine, and local ale. These tabernae displayed vine leaves outside to advertise their trade.

After the Romans left, alehouses became common, as ale was safer than water, which was becoming increasingly polluted with an expanding Medieval population. In 1393, King Richard II ordered: "Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must …

Remembering a British Studies class visit to the first Carnegie Library in Dunfermline, Scotland, one of over 2,800 Carnegie libraries worldwide at the turn of the last century. In their day, Carnegie libraries were more than just charming buildings; they fueled a growing enthusiasm among the masses for the existence of free, tax-supported public libraries intended to enrich their parent communities—especially those for which no comparable institution had existed before.

They also enable potential collaborations between donors, departments, authors, and community organizations. The exhibits themselves can be big or small, temporary or permanent—it is the content that matters.

Referencing Audre Lorde, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Publications and Research

This chapter is close a reading and textual analysis of canonical texts, speeches, and archived audio recordings of Audre Lorde. It embraces Lorde’s many identities, including her identity as a librarian who chose to depart from the library as a means of survival. The author urges reference librarians to study Lorde’s example and learn from Lorde’s choice to act in a space where silence can be transformed into language and action. Acknowledgment of the limitations and opportunities that Lorde teaches us in reference service and institutional structures, may allow for librarians to move toward a realm of justice.

This case study illustrates methods for drawing on primary sources to instruct students on how to generate and refine research questions (Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy, learning objective 1C) and to recognize that research questions may change (Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy, learning objective 1D). The authors are educators with the Brooklyn Connections program, the school outreach arm of Brooklyn Public Library’s archive and rare book division. First-year students completing Musselman Library’s portion of the fall 2018 Charting Your Course (CYC) orientation received one of these passports before beginning the activity. After visiting each of the Library departments and learning about work staff members do there, students received a passport stamp in order to track their progress.

Six librarians and archivists at the University of Dayton taught an archives “mini-course” to introduce students to archival theory and concepts while providing them with a deeper understanding of the history of the university and the city of Dayton. The one-credit class covered concepts including visual literacy, representation in the archives, privacy, and historical empathy. Students researched an archival collection from UD’s special collections, placing the collection within its historical context. They submitted a final project consisting of a poster presentation of their research, a bibliography, and a reflection.

This study identifies the students’ reading interest of Sekolah Dasar Negeri 1 Depok Baru, West Java. This research uses a quantitative research approach with descriptive method. The data was collected by using survey. The results showed that students have their own reading interest. Their favorite genre of reading materials includes religious stories, comic, and short novels. The findings suggest that parents need to introduce another reading material variation such as newspapers. Parents are also encouraged to supervise their children while reading comic.

My last column focused on practical tips to prepare for and handle emergencies. Now we will focus on creating a disaster plan.
