News Media Initiative To Developing Digital Repository From Public Contribution: A Case Of Sdpl Nepal, Prabin Babu Dhakal, Kabita Paudyal

Digital repositories have been mushrooming all around the world, but it is still rare in the developing countries like Nepal due to technological, economical and infrastructural constraints. A consortium was formed with different professionals and organizations to develop a public repository in Nepal. This initiative was fueled by the growing interest of people on new technology after they showed high degree of immunity to natural disaster during 2015 mega earthquake. This paper discusses about the challenges and the solutions employed to build digital repository in hard economic and technological constraints.

In 1845, members of the Wisconsin press led the charge to create a historical society and urged its fellow members to gather their respective newspapers each year and donate them to the society’s library.

An editor wrote, “A full collection of Territorial papers, neatly bound and preserved in the State library, we hardly need suggest, would be of the utmost importance for future reference. Come then, brethren, let us arrange ourselves cheek by jowl in some vacant alcove, that we may tell the wise ones that come after us, what happened in our day.”

Museums today have many responsibilities, including protecting and understanding objects in their care. Many also have relationships with groups of people whose items or artworks are housed within their institutions. This paper explores the relationship between museums and Northwest Coast Native Americans and their artists. Participating museums include those in and out of the Northwest Coast region, such as the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Burke Museum, the Royal British Columbia Museum, the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Museum. Sparked by the 50th anniversary of the founding of the University of Massachusetts Boston in June 1964, University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) staff in the Joseph P. Healey Library collaborated with departments across campus to carry out a wide range of initiatives, all focused on locating, accessioning, preserving, and sharing the physical evidence of the university’s history. The Elizabeth Thoman Archive at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island, has the last complete kit of one of the milestones in the early chronology of media literacy, the 1972 Media Now curriculum. This curriculum was the first of its kind, using self-contained lesson modules that were part of a larger series of kits, text references, and accompanying workbook. Its self-directed learning model gave students the opportunity to learn about the media, by doing, responding to, and reflecting on core concepts of media production. Following the Enlightenment, Western adherence to positivist theory influenced practices of Western research and documentation. Prior to the introduction of positivism into Western scholarship, innovations in printing technology, literary advancements, and the development of capitalism encouraged the passing of copyright statutes by nation-states in fifteenth century Europe. The evolution of copyright and positivism in Europe influenced United States copyright and its protection of the author, as well as the practice of archiving and its role in interpreting history. Because Native American cultures practiced orality, they suffered the loss of their traditional knowledge and cultural expressions not protected by copyright. By …

Promoting awareness of the University Archives has evolved for me for the past six years as University Archivist. It started out as an idea that quickly grew into a wonderful relationship between the University Archives and the rest of UNLV. I originally promoted awareness through outreach services as a librarian in Oro Valley, Arizona. It was a nice way for the organization to get the word out about the new library in the neighborhood. The idea of a Journal of Western Archives began in the early 2000s after plans were being made for a super regional meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It was during this collaborative time that University Archivists Gordon Daines proposed an idea to then Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists President John Murphy. Gordon wanted to establish a journal that would be for archivists working in the western United States. He noticed that as a researcher himself at BYU that archivists in the western United States didn’t publish as much as archivists in the eastern United States.

Spoken-word audio collections cover many domains, including radio and television broadcasts, oral narratives, governmental proceedings, lectures, and telephone conversations. The collection, access, and preservation of such data is stimulated by political, economic, cultural, and educational needs. This paper outlines the major issues in the field, reviews the current state of technology, examines the rapidly changing policy issues relating to privacy and copyright, and presents issues relating to the collection and preservation of spoken audio content.

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) digital libraries are being developed worldwide. Higher education organizations commonly collaborate in these efforts by forming consortia. Some of the existing consortia are at the national level while others are at regional levels. NDLTD (Networked Digital Library for Thesis and Dissertations) is an initiative that is creating an international consortium which includes organizations or other ETD consortia in various countries. Consortia are important because they create an opportunity to collaborate, to share experiences, and to establish or adopt standards that guarantee interoperability among participant ETD digital libraries.
