The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act: How It Pertains To Georgia’S Libraries, Diana J. Very

The article presents information on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and discusses its significance to libraries in Georgia. The legislation, also referred as the Stimulus Public Law 111-5, is intended to create supplemental appropriations for job preservation and creation, infrastructure investment, energy efficiency and science, assistance to the unemployed, and local and state fiscal stabilization. It also discusses the challenges posed by the legislation on library administrators. It explores the funding opportunities that public libraries need to consider.

The need to find and retain high quality leadership for libraries is one of the top seven issues for academic libraries. With a significant percentage of librarians planning to retire in the next decade, retaining professionals is imperative. Librarians must not only be retained, but mentored and developed for future leadership roles in the academic library community (Hisle, 2002).

Creating a “culture of mentoring” helps the organization, individuals in the organization, and those with whom they interact. The article reports on the technology upgrade at Georgia State University Library in Atlanta, Goergia. It offers a look at renovations of its facilities and exterior. More than 350 computers were installed in its new Information Commons and Learning Commons. The library officials jointly worked with the school's Information Systems & Technology department and established two computer technical support desk within the library. Cultivating The Librarian Within: Effectively Lntegrating Library Lnstruction Into Freshman Composition, Jesse Ulmer, Nancy E. Fawley

It has become common practice for library instruction to be included in lower-level college composition courses. Students are typically required to visit the library once or twice a semester to receive instruction on how to find books and journal articles for an upcoming writing assignment that incorporates formal research. But does this current model of instruction truly address course outcomes that seek to produce students who are information literate, critical thinkers and life-long learners? Faculty who teach such courses are often reluctant to surrender precious class time to a librarian, but this paper argues that the merging of bibliographic instruction …

Reference Classification--Is It Time To Make Some Changes?, Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

In 2005, the authors tested the consistency and ease-of-use of a skill/strategy-based reference question classification system published by Warner in 2001. Results of that test indicated that the Warner system was a significant improvement over the resource-based traditional system. In this study, reference librarians from other institutions were invited to compare the technologysensitive Warner system to the traditional Katz classification system. The results of this larger test mirror the findings of the original study. Overall, classification was more consistent using the Warner system.

Conyers-Rockdale Library Celebrates Start Of Construction

The article reports on the ground breaking ceremony for the long-delayed renovation and expansion of the Conyers-Rockdale Library in Georgia held on October 2, 2008. The library will continue its operation during the construction process, which is expected to conclude in the spring of 2010. It describes the features and facilities of the library. David Moore with Craig, Gaulden and Davis Architects designed the library building.

I recently was given the opportunity to work for not one, but two amazing library open source support companies at the same time. These two companies, ByWater Solutions (http://bywatersolutions.com) and BibLibre (http://biblibre.com) decided to have me work in collaboration with the two of them simply because that’s what open source is all about – collaboration.

Barbie Keiser, Information Resource Management Consultant, conducted a one day workshop titled “Substance beyond style: Marketing library and information services in the 21st century” in Singapore on 15 October. The workshop was organized by the Library Association of Singapore and the Singapore Management University. It was held at the Reading Room, Li Ka Shing Library, Singapore Management University. Ms. Keiser noted that she did her first marketing workshop in Singapore in 1989 and was pleased to be back twenty years later.
