Assessment in academic libraries is more important than ever as we strive to satisfy users, administrators and accreditation agencies, and present data to inform ongoing and future strategic directions. LibQUAL+TM yields a substantive set of quantitative and qualitative data that is relatively fast and easy to analyze, and is especially useful when significant skills and time to conduct meaningful assessment may not be present, such as in smaller academic libraries. Communicating the results and responses of assessment to stakeholders is a vital aspect of assessment and may in itself be indicative of the likelihood to enact positive change based on …

Second Life Complements The Internet For Reference Librarians, Florence Tang

The article describes the Second Life culture as an interactive virtual environment from the perspective of a reference librarian. The cited advantages of using Second Life are synchronous interaction with other people, clearer appearance of chat text messages, incorporation of social norms, and accessibility. Among the noted obstacles to using Second Life are its price, intentional distress of other avatars, empty virtual public places, less hierarchy among participants, chatting via rapid typing, and quick change of landscapes and avatars.

The article calls for the need to reinvent libraries for the next generation of library users. It stresses the value of being able to provide customer satisfaction, building and maintaining loyalty as well as resolving customer complaints so as to compete with other libraries. It also points out the importance of branding as a marketing strategy and encourages libraries to adhere to the liaison model or subject specialist model in providing specialized service. Many of these students need help in navigating the complex services, collections, and facilities of a large academic library. Monthly productivity statistics for Monographic Acquisitions and Copy Cataloging (MACC) Unit, University Library, University of Rhode Island. Data for fiscal year include bibliographic, item, and order records created, updated, and deleted by the MACC Unit in the HELIN integrated library system.

These statistics were first collected in 2001/02 to illustrate that, despite the fact that the number of books ordered was decreasing, staff were spending more of their time on database maintenance. After this situation was documented for seven years, it was felt that gathering these numbers was no longer necessary. Therefore, 2008/09 is the last year for which these …

The article discusses the use of Midwest Library Service's notification scheme by Dalton State College in Georgia. It offers a New Book Selection Service, which replaces the notification slip as a medium of distributing announcements on forthcoming titles. This information is sent by electronic mail instead. The Right Book On The Right Shelf: Missing And Misshelved Books-- How Barcode Scanning Inventories Can Solve The Patrons' Dilemma, Judith M. Nixon

After over thirty years of failing to conduct a comprehensive inventory of the book collection at a large liberal arts library, our patrons complained that they could not find one in five books. Study of the problem indicated that in fact 20% of our books were either missing or miss-shelved. This article discusses the investigation of the problem and the impact after five years of conducting an annual inventory by using hand-held devices to gather barcodes and interface these with our catalog records to find the missing and miss-shelved books. However, many sources that explore the connections between Christian faith and the information professions fail to acknowledge the existence of prior discourse on the subject. This paper explores the place of the rural library in the context of reading habits of teens.
