Two Talking Book Centers To Merge

The article reports on the decision of the North Georgia Talking Book Center at the Cherokee Regional Library in LaFayette to merge with the Rome Subregional Library, part of the Sara Hightower Regional Library System. The North Georgia Talking Book Center will become an outreach center for its 10 county service area, while the Rome Subregional Library will give all reader's advisory and customer services, by the end of 2008.

Whereas a user goes to guides for lists of content, perhaps a user can go to guides to execute a function. By walking through the creation of a paper-writing guide, this idea of a functioning guide is illustrated.

Yes, of course I know the expression is “Don’t look,” not kicking, but our collective professional behavior makes “kicking” the more operative and appropriate verbal. More about this in due course. As an expression, “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” comes to us from the Lain, Noli equi dentes inspicere donate. Some argue Jerome said it first in 400 A.D., in which his words, very nearly our Latin literally translated, ran, “Never inspect the teeth of a gift horse.”

Atlanta-Fulton Hosts Children's Festival

The article reports on the Ashley Bryan Children's Literary Festival hosted by Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System's Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American History and Culture presented on April 25 and 26, 2008. The children's literacy program celebrated the contribution of Ashley Brayan to children's literature with interactive and educational programs and events that introduced children of all ages to culturally relevant art, literature and poetry. The conference was attended by teachers, librarians and parents and many children.

Danowski Poetry Library Debuts At Emory

The article reports on the debut of the first major exhibition of items from Emory University's Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at the Schatten Gallery of the university's Woodruff Library in Atlanta, Georgia. The exhibition focuses not on one particular school or kind of poetry but rather provides a sense of the whole of poetry. The exhibition also highlights the democratic qualities of the poetry collection. It reveals the relevance of poetry to the events of the century. Other poetry collection books highlighted at the exhibition are mentioned.

Librarians at North Carolina State University have developed useful techniques for enhancing information literacy instruction through the systematic incorporation of concepts pertaining to scholarly communication and the economics surrounding information. This presentation describes ways to leveraging such concepts as the Deep Web, Google Scholar, the nature of scholarly communication, and the inflated costs of journal subscriptions to contextualize hands-on instruction in the use of library resources. Assessment data from open-ended quizzes and surveys positively reflects students’ attitudes towards this instruction and exposes the impact of such instruction on student understanding about how research is made available on the Web.

In June 2006, two librarians from North Carolina participated in an exchange program sponsored by the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) and the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Alliance. Iyanna Sims, Electronic Resources Librarian from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, spent two weeks on the campus of Wake Forest University in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, at the invitation of Lynn Sutton. Director. The exchange experience is part of a comprehensive leadership initiative of the HBCU Alliance.

Last month a new study commissioned by the British Library and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) issued one of those “Duh!” reports. What is the single best thing you can teach new users about your library? Who are the most powerful trendsetters of library use? When the staff at the Coates Library at Trinity University asked themselves that question, we found that our best answer was this: students who serve as residential life staff have an enormous influence on new student behavior; ask them to teach new users to feel comfortable in the library and to be aware of its resources. Comfortable people ask questions, experiment with new tools, and promote those behaviors in others.

Spotlight On Construction: New Coweta County Library Inspired By Frank Lloyd Wright, Patricia Palmer

The article reports on the construction of a new library in Coweta County, Georgia. The construction of a new library was primary in the plan of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners and represents the first library built in Coweta County in 20 years. According to Barbara Osborne-Harris, Coweta County Library director, the vision has always been to create a library that facilitates, in many ways, vibrant, energetic and interactive learning. Kathleen Curry is the project architect. She referred to Frank Lloyd Wright's designs for architectural inspiration.

Henderson Library has been the hub of academic life at Georgia Southern University for more than 30 years. The article reveals that the Odum Library of Valdosta State University in Georgia participated in the LibQual™ survey to assess how well the library is performing in three specific areas: Effect of Service, Library as Place and Information Control. The Library as Place section was of the greatest interest for survey participants. Noise in the library received by far the most comments, most of them negative. The author examines the noise phenomenon in his library, reviewed its history, contemplated his developing attitudes, and analyzed his thoughts about the noise issue.
