In the "new normal" environment for higher education, libraries must realign themselves much more closely with the university mission, vision, and strategic priorities. In this environment of constant change, libraries must take on new roles and emphasize different priorities. Institutional repository services are essential to this process. Purpose – This paper seeks to offer a rationale and practical suggestions for the integration of visual literacy instruction and information literacy instruction practice and theory.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper aligns visual literacy and information literacy competency standards, revealing connections and opportunities for practical integration during library instruction and traditional classroom instruction.

Findings – On analysis of 11 visual literacy competencies, three exhibit a strong relationship with the ACRL's Information Literacy Competency Standards.

Practical implications – The paper provides guidelines for teaching and learning scenarios that may be used in a library instruction session or as part of a course …

User Satisfaction With Electronic Reference: A Systematic Review, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman, Irina I. Holden

Purpose – The paper aims to systematically review research that analyzes satisfaction with electronic reference services, paying particular attention to how user satisfaction is measured. The application and value of evidence‐based methodologies for library and information science (LIS) research are explored.

Design/methodology/approach – Database searches identified research concerned with electronic reference. Articles with a variable of user satisfaction were extracted and subjected to a critical appraisal. The remaining research was analyzed for similarities, differences, and consistency.

Grand Valley State University librarians designed and conducted teaching faculty1 focus groups to gauge their response to a new information literacy (IL) core student competencies document created to support a developing library IL programme. Although the competencies were inspired by existing, widely known information literacy standards and guidelines the University Libraries’ Information Literacy Competencies document (ILCC) is unique and written specifically to address the university’s culture and curriculum. The authors of this paper formed a research team to assemble two groups of teaching faculty from various disciplines and to analyse focus group transcripts using a content analysis approach. In recent years the Carnegie Corporation's influence on Australian library development has been fruitfully examined from many angles, among them its role in promoting free-library movements in the various states. One piece of the story, however, remains mostly in the shadows: the Corporation's initiatives pointing towards modernizing and professionalizing Australian university libraries. Although the Corporation's philanthropic enterprise at the university level yielded mixed results at best, it was not inconsequential. It provided a blueprint for future university-library development in Australia. This paper addresses rural book distribution in an era before free public libraries came to Australia. Well-to-do, city women established clubs, which solicited donations of “proper reading matter” and raised funds for the purchase of books for their “deprived sisters” in the Outback. They took advantage of a well-developed rail system to deliver book parcels to rural families. In New South Wales and Queensland they were known as Bush Book Clubs.

This paper describes the cost-benefits and the return on investment of one consortium comprised of five separately administered libraries in the University of Colorado (CU) System. With a long history of collaboration, the libraries have developed an ideal cooperative arrangement for acquiring electronic content that is accessible across all campuses. The size and flexibility of this institution-based consortium allows it to be responsive and successful in collaborating across four campuses despite different sized budgets and unique local and institutional constraints. The author discusses the role of libraries and books throughout his youth and professional career and his belief in their value to the community. Due to reduced state funding for public libraries, his family reportedly joined The Friends of The Libraries group to volunteer for fundraising efforts. The African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) project is a pan-African research network of academics and researchers from law, economics and the information sciences, spanning Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda. Research conducted by the project was designed to investigate the extent to which copyright is fulfilling its objective of facilitating access to knowledge, and learning materials in particular, in the study countries. In an era of consistently poor funding for materials budgets, libraries must work to identify the most cost-effective solutions for providing access to information needed by patrons. Consortia play an important role in these solutions for many libraries and can help leverage their buying power to provide widespread access to various publishers’ content at more affordable costs. The CARLI consortium in Illinois formed a Statewide Serials Collection Task Force in 2006 to “investigate various collaborative options related to print and electronic serials collections across the state.” As part of this group's work, the Worldcat Collection Analysis tool, commonly employed for …

This original research described a comparison of 50 composition topics taken from my library instruction sessions with Reference Universe versus simple keyword searching of the online catalog. Pete and I concluded that twenty-three percent of the "good" hits in Reference Universe were also found in OPAC search and that the OPAC search found fewer "good" hits overall; but also found different relevant resources.
