The workshop announcement started simply enough: “Your students are using
it. You are using it. Why not get the most out of Google tools?” The workshop, called “Using Google Like a Librarian,” was for faculty and staff at Grand Valley State University. Over the past two years, librarians have been teaming up with instructional technology staff to create on-campus professional development opportunities, and this was going to be (we thought) just another workshop. And then it got popular.

Interlibrary Loan Purchase-On-Demand: A Misleading Literature, Gerrit Van Dyk

Many libraries are engaging in interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand without fully acknowledging all of the costs of adding such titles to their collections. This study compares the costs of monograph interlibrary loans and the costs of monograph accession, including staffing overhead costs for both. In order to be truly cost-effective, interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand titles must have a minimum projected circulation, depending on the base price to purchase the item. A review of current patron-driven acquisitions models associated with interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand is included.

The last three decades, and especially the last fifteen years, have seen an expansion in the formats in which library materials are available, as electronic resources have joined the traditional print offerings produced by library suppliers. More and more, the electronic resource is becoming the first stop “go-to” information source, a predominance which can be confirmed by the number of reference and other sources which have shifted from print to electronic format or, not making the change, have simply ceased to exist.

This presentation will provide the rationale and procedures for adding freely available Web sites to the online catalog to augment and support curricular needs and provide some mechanisms for students to find and access the resources easily.

There are a number of kinds of libraries commonplace in the United States, including public, school, college and university, legal, and research libraries, each of which has a constituency they serve. The libraries with which people have the greatest familiarity and the two types they utilize on the most frequent basis are the public libraries, those which primarily serve municipalities, and school libraries, those which serve kindergarten through twelfth grade schools. This panel session reports on a professional development workshop series to prepare librarians to assume a more engaged role in the university. The goal of the program is to re-examine the librarian’s role, focusing on the liaison role as the unifying agent to cultivate engagement with users through the teaching-learning process. Attendees will complete sample activities from the workshops and will learn how this model might be adapted to their own institutional setting.

Beyond Foursquare: Library Treks With Scvngr, Amy E. Vecchione, Margaret Mellinger

SCVNGR is a game-based geolocation application where users can earn points or gain rewards by completing challenges and treks. Builders design questions that involve text based answers (open ended or multiple choice), QR codes, or photo challenges. Librarians at Boise State University and Oregon State University have built treks and challenges using SCVNGR for library orientations and instruction. They have found SCVNGR a better environment than Foursquare for these purposes. With SCVNGR, students can participate in the challenges and treks using not only their smart phones and mobile devices, but also via text-messaging and laptops. Social Gerontology- Integrative And Territorial Aspects: A Citation Analysis Of Subject Scatter And Database Coverage, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

To determine the mix of resources used in social gerontology research, a citation analysis was conducted. A representative sample of citations was selected from three prominent gerontology journals and information was added to determine subject scatter and database coverage for the cited materials. Results indicate that a significant portion of gerontology research, even from a social science perspective, relies roughly equally on medical resources as it does social science resources. Furthermore, there is a small but defined core of literature constituting scholarly “territory” unique to gerontology. Analysis of database indexing indicated that broad, interdisciplinary databases provide more comprehensive coverage of …

Lending libraries were not the norm in 1934 when the Carnegie Corporation of New York sent American librarian, Ralph Munn, to conduct a study of the condition of Australian libraries. In his initial survey Munn learned of the Queensland Bush Book Club, an organization of well-to-do, philanthropic women from Brisbane who had established a book lending service for settlers in the Outback. They hoped to ease the drudgery and lighten the burden faced by isolated women and their families in the rural areas. The antidote was a regular parcel of “proper” reading matter which included books, newspapers and magazines. They …

This paper looks at how evidence and success were constructed in Biblionet - Global Libraries Romania, an NGO-led, technology-based project in Romania. The main focus of Biblionet is to provide public access to computers and the internet in public libraries throughout Romania. Here, we discuss how project staff relied on one particular set of measures to legitimatize, validate and "sell" their project to audiences in Romania and in the West. This NGO tended to "demonstrate" success using relatively weak measures. Perhaps the most suspect of these were, paradoxically, appeals to" science," that is to say, "hard" numbers and and one-time, …

The authors discuss declining usage of print collections in business disciplines and describe a survey of business faculty conducted in fall 2009. Results indicate a preference for print books but a willingness to substitute e-books. Using these results, this article outlines reasons for faculty preferences and implications for future collection development.

According to a new report (http://tinyurl.com/2g6ghps), if you are on the Web at all you’re not safe from hackers, phishers, and spammers (oh my!). The Norton Cybercrime Report: The Human Impact (http://cybercrime.newslinevine.com/) of 7,000 Web users tells us that 65% of all users globally, and 73% of U. S. users, have been hacked in some sort of cybercrime. Globally, the U. S. ranks very high but in this case we’re not first in line. China wins Number One with 83% of its users web-abused in some manner. These are figures to give one pause.

The Continuing Resources Team at Eastern Kentucky University Libraries has used a structured, collaborative process mapping approach to identify workflow problems and make improvements. We also identified better tools for sharing information that is needed by multiple staff members. Instruction Librarians from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) will describe their creation, design, and teaching of a three credit hour undergraduate course that focuses on the development of information literacy skills. The course, “LIB 103: Introduction to Library Research and Technology”, is required for UNCW’s Information Technology minor, which is offered by the university’s Department of Computer Science. This interdisciplinary course exposes students to aspects of media literacy, critical thinking, information evaluation, research skills, various information technologies, and current issues in the information age. Transliteracy is recent terminology gaining currency in the library world. It is a broad term encompassing and transcending many existing concepts.
