Librarians across library types and departments frequently provide training materials to each other, library technicians, and student workers. For these materials to be effective, they must contain accurate information and should also follow guidelines for usable document design. Good design makes documents easier to use, helps documents stand out from other pieces of information, and lends credibility to document creators. A few simple tips, such as following Gestalt principles and using plain language, can improve document usability. Research And Publication Productivity Of Librarians In Public Universities In South-West, Nigeria, Sarah Okonedo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study reports the publication output of librarians in public universities in South-west, Nigeria. The descriptive survey method was used for the study. 166 copies of the questionnaire were administered to librarians in both federal and state university libraries. In response, 142 copies were retrieved indicating a response rate of 85.5%. The data was analyzed using frequency count, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Findings indicated that the publication output of librarians between 2009 and 2014 was relatively high. Librarians publish more in international journals than local journals and, librarians are motivated to publish mostly for promotion. Challenges to publication efforts …

Creating an Institutional Repository from scratch creates a multitude of both opportunities and pitfalls in establishment of workflow, content creation, outreach and marketing policies, and stakeholder support. Nova Southeastern University’s Digital Commons based repository, NSUWorks, completed its first year in February 2015. During this session, the triumphs and tribulations of the first year will be discussed, along with future plans in order to give attendees a glimpse into one particular IR experience. Archival collection digitization, outreach/marketing, journal/book publishing, reporting tools, and collection development will also be covered.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB), also known as an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC), is the most widely adopted process to insure human participant protection. The IRB system is overburdened as human research studies and human participation has dramatically increased without a corresponding increase in reviewing clinicians or ethics staff. Librarian involvement in the IRB process is evident but uneven and unstudied on an international scale. The value in photographs is noted "in our culture because they are inexpensive, easy to acquire, and serve as accurate, detailed records of our environment and activities" (Schmidle, 1996). But, many challenges are presented to the archivist and librarian by the discovered or donated collection of photographs because in their abundance and variety, they can surpass all other forms of information housed in institutions. For a university archives, holdings include photographs culled from manuscript collections, from individual photographers and alumni, but the majority come from in-house production. This chapter explores ways in which different types of students approach the information landscape and how this can impact the tactics and pedagogy of the instruction librarian. More importantly, assignment strategies are presented that connect students to librarians and also push students to think about how they interact with information. A close connection between librarians and students can provide a foundation that can help both. Librarians can expand their understanding of how individual students approach research; students can benefit by gaining a better grasp of the role of the librarian and how librarians can help them.

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Undergraduate history majors need to know how to conduct archival research. This paper describes the second phase of a project to identify “archival literacy” competencies. Faculty, archivists, and librarians from baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral/research institutions commented on a draft list. This resulted in competencies in six major categories: accurately conceive of primary sources; locate primary sources; use a research question, evidence, and argumentation to advance a thesis; obtain guidance from archivists; demonstrate acculturation to archives; and follow publication protocols. Collaborations of archivists, faculty, and librarians can integrate the competencies throughout undergraduate history curricula in their institutions.

Departmentalization, on the other hand, is the grouping of jobs according to some logical arrangement. National organizations attempt to engage school librarians in advocacy and have developed resources and tools to assist with this task. However, there is little research examining how practicing school librarians engage in advocacy and how their advocacy efforts impact their library programs.
