This article discusses the major influence that the information age has had on librarianship. Computer-related technology has changed the way librarians do their jobs, their duties, and has created a whole new realm of opportunities for librarians. Data from the Library Journal annual salary surveys and the ALA Placement Center are included in charts and figures to track job market trends from 1985-2000. Issues such as salary, job mobility and education are also discussed.

This article evolved from " Getting Students to NOTIS, "

a presentation that the author gave at the 1995 Chicago NOTIS Users

Group Meeting (NUGM) conference. Humor is a desirable element of

all types of instruction, particularly bibliographic instruction. A good

method for injecting some humor into bibliographic instruction is

introducing whimsical catalog entries. The author identifies five types

of bibIiographic records useful for this approach, provides strategies for

locating them, and suggests ways to incorporate them into a class.

The Collection Development Council at Old Dominion University (Virginia) decided to involve all subject specialist librarians in creating guides to web resources in the disciplines for which they serve as bibliographers. The project was intended to help librarians become familiar with Internet resources in their fields of expertise and give them experience with World Wide Web searching. A worksheet for bibliographers and a sample guide were provided. Librarians were asked to complete a worksheet for one of their assigned areas of collection development in the next year. African American Librarians In Kentucky, Reinette F. Jones

Kentucky was the first North American state to establish a free public library exclusively for African Americans. The library, located in Louisville, Kentucky, was managed by Thomas Fountain Blue, the first African American to manage a public library. The establishing of the Colored Library and Thomas Fountain Blue's Apprentice Training Program was the beginning of librarianship and libraries for African Americans in Kentucky.

This paper develops a career path model for academic librarians, delineating primary roles, psychological issues, required competencies, and strategies to attain those competencies at each state.
