In this episode of PDXPLORES, Emily Ford, a professor in the Millar Library at Portland State University, discusses the lived experiences of peer review, a small but landmark part of scholarly communications. Ford argues that proprietary publishing has influenced many of the processes in the scholarly publishing ecosystem, resulting in a need to reapply the values of human inquiry to scholarly communications. Drawing from her research, Ford suggests how the academic community might address this need.

Awareness Of Social Media Privacy & Security: A Study Among Engineering Students In Spsr Nellore Dist., A.P., Nagaraju Kuppugari

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on the engineering student’s awareness of social media privacy and security issues. For this purpose, the survey method was adopted and a questionnaire was administered among the engineering students. The results revealed that majority of the respondents (60.8 percent) are reading the privacy policies on social media Majority of the respondents (76.31 percent) are avoiding friend requests from unknown persons. The process of creating and stewarding descriptive metadata is often approached with a focus on standardization. However, utilizing an approach grounded in care ethics to construct a relationship between the metadata creator and the people who are the creators and subjects of the archival materials can provide better descriptive metadata. Where Are They Now? The 2020 Status Of Early (1996-2003) Online Digital Humanities Projects And An Analysis Of Institutional Factors Correlated To Their Survival, Drew E. Vandecreek

Researchers have suggested that free-use digital humanities websites remain online for an average of five years and that larger, more functionally specialized and wealthier institutions are more likely than other organizations to continue to make them available online for a long period after their initial development. A study of 59 websites created with funds provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities Education Development and Demonstration program 1996–2003 reveals a different situation. The data show that 68% of these websites remained online for free use in September, 2020, suggesting an online lifespan of approximately eleven to sixteen years. Further statistical …

This research was carried out to survey the involvement of library personnel in the application of information and communication technologies in academic libraries in Bayelsa and Delta States. The descriptive survey design was the research method adopted for the study where 198 questionnaires were retrieved and used for analysis. It was found out from the study library personnel in academic libraries in Bayelsa and Delta States were not highly involved in ICT application process. The study examined Selection and acquisition of library retrieval tools in Benue State University library: The challenges and prospects on academic performance of undergraduate Students. Six research questions guided the study. A survey design was adopted in carrying out the study. The total population for this study was (1,050) one thousand and fifty students and librarians put together. The major instrument for data collection was questionnaire. 10% of the population, one hundred and five (105) was sampled using the questionnaires and all the copies were returned. In this case study, we cover Research Data Management (RDM) policy development at SMU, the implementation of SMU’s Research Data Repository. The outreach and engagement carried out at the launch and subsequently. We reflect on what we learnt in the process. We also did a pilot feasibility study of using Figshare as a paper repository and report on our findings.

Design Matters: How A Course Review Informed Online Teaching Best Practices, Laura A. Sheets, Maureen Barry, Eileen K. Bosch

This paper discusses how an Applying the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric for Higher Education workshop had an impact on the online teaching practice of three academic librarians. The QM Rubric was used to review and update a credit-bearing information literacy course taught by the authors’ department. The authors reflect on how this training influenced their relationship to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic (and beyond), using examples from their own experiences to demonstrate how instruction librarians contributed to online education during this period and how they used sustainable teaching practices to lessen the workloads of their teaching colleagues.
