Kicking & Streaming! Enhancing Digitally-Born Oral History Collections In Digital Commons, Autumn Johnson May 2020

Kicking & Streaming! Enhancing Digitally-Born Oral History Collections In Digital Commons, Autumn Johnson

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group Meeting (2020) (Archived)

Oral history collections pose unique challenges for archival institutions. Making these important histories available to researchers is often impeded by complex issues of access, privacy rights, and media obsolescence. These challenges are magnified when histories are digitally-born. Not only do they face the same issues as their analog counterparts, but digital materials have their own unique preservation and access issues with which archivists are still struggling to identify best practices. Digital Commons offers archivists a platform for sharing digitally-born oral histories that mitigate many of these complex issues. Not only does the platform allow for the consolidation of files from …

Mining The Minutia: Leveraging Adobe Acrobat’S Comparison Tools For Cv Updates, Jennifer Gerrald, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group Meeting (2020) (Archived)

As every profile administrator knows, CVs are amorphous documents. Updates can occur anywhere at any time as researchers’ statuses, institutional roles, and research agendas evolve. Sections and entries can appear and disappear fluidly over the life of a CV, and even details within a single entry can change over time. For the profile administrator, catching these updates efficiently and effectively can be a real challenge. This presentation details one university’s approach to using Adobe Acrobat’s document comparison tools to identify, track, and process updates that improves significantly on manual review techniques. Presenters provide a detailed overview of this process, including …

Drive Traffic, Increase Links, Michele Gibney, Nicole Grady

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group Meeting (2020) (Archived)

One of the best ways to drive traffic to an institutional repository site is by adding links to it from other, established sites. This could be your institutional website – adding links from a departmental page to the department’s scholarly work. Or from your social media platforms to a relevant article corresponding with a topical news event. Another option is Wikipedia. Have you considered leveraging Wikipedia’s astronomical base of users for your own ends? With an average of 200 million+ page views a day, Wikipedia is an excellent resource to drive traffic to your IR.

But HOW can you accomplish …

From Protecting To Performing Privacy, Garfield Benjamin May 2020

From Protecting To Performing Privacy, Garfield Benjamin

The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique

Privacy is increasingly important in an age of facial recognition technologies, mass data collection, and algorithmic decision-making. Yet it persists as a contested term, a behavioural paradox, and often fails users in practice. This article critiques current methods of thinking privacy in protectionist terms, building on Deleuze's conception of the society of control, through its problematic relation to freedom, property and power. Instead, a new mode of understanding privacy in terms of performativity is provided, drawing on Butler and Sedgwick as well as Cohen and Nissenbaum. This new form of privacy is based on identity, consent and collective action, a …

Public Libraries In Nigeria And The Development Agenda, Victoria O. Okojie Phd, Rose B. Okiy Phd

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The paper examined the services of public libraries in Nigeria, including the National Library of Nigeria with a view to ascertaining which services aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063 as well as knowing their level of awareness of the AFLIA Cape Town Declaration, 2015. A lot of training has been carried out for librarians by many international non-governmental organizations. However, the visibility of the development work of public libraries in Nigeria is still low. For instance, while many countries have uploaded stories on IFLA Library Map of the World (LMoW), there is no story …

Exploring Vicarious Trauma In The Archives: A Brief Survey Of American Archival Experiences, Victoria A. Fernandez May 2020

Exploring Vicarious Trauma In The Archives: A Brief Survey Of American Archival Experiences, Victoria A. Fernandez

Student Theses

Whether deliberately collected or not, evidence of trauma is commonly found in archival collections. As a result, the field has seen a recent increase in conference presentations regarding archivists’ experience of working with traumatic materials, yet little has actually been researched or published. Vicarious trauma, as it is known in psychological contexts, is the understanding that individuals engaging with survivors of trauma may experience the emotional labor of their clients in secondary form. Although the concept of vicarious trauma is almost exclusively applied to mental health professionals, archivists are recognizing the need to integrate the prevalence of vicarious trauma within …

Student-Parents And Academic Libraries, Rachel E. Scott, Brannen Varner May 2020

Student-Parents And Academic Libraries, Rachel E. Scott, Brannen Varner

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

[In the absence of an abstract, the introductory paragraph is provided.] At many colleges and universities, student-parents—students with one or more dependent children—are a growing population. Research in higher education has long demonstrated that student-parents face obstacles to completing degrees and participating in college experiences. Academic librarians, however, have done little work to study what student-parents uniquely need to succeed academically, though, several academic libraries now offer family-friendly study spaces. As mothers and former student-parents ourselves, we witnessed students express self-consciousness or evince discomfort when their children accompanied them in our library. We identified the need to ask—and listen …

Research Data Management (Rdm) Services In Libraries: Lessons For Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Mgbodichima Jummai Nwabugwu, Lucky Stephen Godwin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Research funding organizations understand the importance of infrastructure and services to organize and preserve research data. Academic research libraries have been identified as locations in which to base these research data management services. Research data management services include data management planning, digital curation (selection, preservation, maintenance, and archiving), and metadata creation and conversion. However, some libraries are beginning to provide structure for research data management services. These services are starting to record some degree of success as local data policies are being formulated. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to discuss the importance of research data management in the …
