Research Design Challenges Of An Early Career Edi Researcher, Jessica Serrao Aug 2020

Research Design Challenges Of An Early Career Edi Researcher, Jessica Serrao

Presentations

Research doesn’t always go as planned. There are the usual challenges of balancing resources and shifting timelines to accommodate the unexpected. Throw in the learning curve of an early career researcher and the multi-faceted understanding and application of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in archives, and designing a research project becomes a complex journey of understanding. This presentation will outline challenges the researcher faced in designing and modifying a research project examining EDI initiatives in digital collections metadata practices. More specifically, it will address the challenges of: defining and operationalizing equity, diversity, and inclusion; ensuring the design is inclusive itself …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

With COVID-19 affecting our personal and professional life, librarians have had to adapt to a variety of fast moving changes during a crisis. The University of Central Florida STEM Librarian team of two Research & Information Services subject librarians, responded to the challenges of remote work by establishing fruitful partnerships within the library, and collaboration within units across campus. Our proposed 15 minute presentation would cover the following three learning objectives: (1) to demonstrate how the UCF Librarians adapted to an ever changing landscape, (2) to share strategies for success on how to partner with teams across the library, and …

(Mis)Information Creation As A Process: A Method For Teaching Media Literacy By Applying An Acrl Framework Frame, Winn W. Wasson

Librarian Publications

In January 2019, I taught a condensed credit-bearing media literacy course for undergraduates based on the ACRL Frame, “Information Creation as Process”. My main learning objective was to teach students to recognize accurate information, misinformation, and disinformation in the news and on social media, not by naming them as such, but by: 1) exposing students to the process through which news goes from field observations to a published or broadcast story, and 2) exploring current social and cognitive psychology research on how humans evaluate whether to believe the information they consume. The course ended with a discussion of healthy information …

Research Data Service: Current State And Future Plan For Cwu, Ping Fu Aug 2020

Research Data Service: Current State And Future Plan For Cwu, Ping Fu

Library Scholarship

Today, more and more academic libraries provide or plan to provide library-based research data services (RDS). There are two major reasons: (1) science becomes more collaborative, data-intensive, and computational, and academic researchers face a series of data management needs; (2) research funding agencies require researchers to provide data management plans when they apply for a grant and publishers also require researchers to provide data when publishing research results. Tenopir, C. et al. (2014) pointed out that “academic libraries may be ideal centers for research data service activities on campuses, providing unique opportunities for academic libraries to become even more active …

PSU Library has always been empathetic and service-oriented, but now we find ourselves going the extra mile for editors and authors whose lives have been disrupted ‒ doing whatever it takes to maintain sustainable publishing and highlight social justice. Our focus is directly aimed at helping the underdogs and fostering change, reasserting our relationship with readers by working with authors and editors …
