The high costs of textbooks negatively impact access, success, and retention rates for undergraduate students. Librarians from Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, Florida, and the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, have established textbook affordability programs, using course reserves, e-resources, and open educational resources to help reduce the textbook burden for their students. Each library has developed a set of best practices for implementation and success that can be adapted by other higher education institutions that are interested in beginning a similar project.

This document includes work-in-progress reports submitted to the Library of Congress as part of the Aida digital libraries research team's work on Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, and Augmented Description: A Demonstration Project. These work-in-progress reports provide a snapshot glimpse, as well as underlying rationale and decision-making, at various points in the development of the project and its machine learning explorations. Reports cover explorations on historic newspapers, minimally-processed manuscript collections, materials digitized from physical originals and those digitized from microform surrogates, and investigate challenges related to image segmentation and document zoning, classification, document image quality analysis, metadata generation, and more.

Teaching An Introduction To Archives Course To Undergraduates: A New Experience For The Archivist And The Students, Julia Stringfellow

This article explores a new Introduction to Archives class taught to undergraduates through a Library and Information Science Minor Program offered by the James E. Brooks Library at Central Washington University (CWU). The course is taught by the University Archivist. The challenges of recruiting students, promotion of the course, and teaching an upper level course to undergraduates from different disciplines is described, as well as the benefits of offering this type of course at the undergraduate level. A review of the literature on the benefits of educating undergraduates on archives and archival research is also included.

As open educational resources (OER) becomes a more established concept, its growth and continued success not only center around the creation of new content but also depend upon the development and evolution of existing content, licenses permitting. The evolution of and persistent access to existing content requires easily editable works and the ability to download local copies of OER files so that no technical limitations hinder what the license permits. Such measures as text files, OpenDocument formats, and version control present a way to keep OER content editable and shareable, in compliance with licenses. For any body of knowledge – an ark of power or a corpus of scholarship – to be studied and used by people, it needs to be accessible to those seeking information. Universities, through their libraries, now aim to make more of the scholarship produced available for free to all through institutional repositories. However, the goal of being truly open for an institutional repository is more than the traditional definition of open access. It also means openness in a more general sense. This one-day pre-conference workshop, presented by Steve Shadle at NASIG 2018, was based on an abridged version of the Serials Cooperative Cataloging Training Program (SCCTP) Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop.1 Two sections of the workshop materials were omitted in order to complete the workshop in one day: Module 5 - Describing Carriers and Content, and Module 9 - Identifying Appropriate Copy. Student veteran enrollment in higher education has increased significantly following the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Molina & Morse, 2015). The professional literature of academic libraries includes several examples of outreach to this growing population, most of which involve marketing to student veterans differently, customizing existing services and spaces for student veterans, and honoring student veterans for their military service. Archivists and special collections librarians have struggled for a long time with how to show patrons what we have in our holdings. Collections have been made accessible through container lists, finding aids, and collection and content management systems such as ArchivesSpace, Islandora, and CONTENTdm. Each of these documents and systems also has its own learning curve and different functions, but even then the scale of some topics in collections or the connectedness between collections is not always apparent.

Western ethnographers, archaeologists, and researchers have collected information on indigenous cultures for centuries, but often without the input or permission of those cultures. This creates a situation in which indigenous peoples are essentially colonized anew. Recent trends in academia, including archival studies, have sought to decolonize research. This article explores past and present methods of the collection and preservation of oral histories from indigenous persons in both the United States and Australia in order to seek the best practice(s) for such endeavors. The Northwest Archival Processing Initiative (NWAPI) was the first consortium to implement Greene and Meissner’s “More Product, Less Process,” and its member institutions were among the earliest to adopt MPLP methods. Now, ten years after the close of this NHPRC-funded initiative, MPLP is a widely-recognized methodology that has been applied to many collections, but MPLP has also influenced archival functions other than processing. This article revisits the original eight NWAPI consortium participants to explore how successfully archivists that were trained in MPLP were able to institutionalize its processing methods over the last ten years, and how MPLP affected other areas …
